Charlotte is the cheapest of our five Southeast metros, on every appliance

We run one price list across every metro we serve. Charlotte still comes out lowest overall, and against the four other Southeast metros in this table it is lowest on every appliance category.

The overall median Bozmanfix repair in Charlotte, parts and labor and the service call together, is 312 dollars. The same repair in Jacksonville runs 386. That is a 24 percent gap between two markets billed off an identical rate card, so the difference is entirely in what breaks and how hard it is to reach.

It is also the flattest market we work in

Cheap metros are usually cheap in patches. Charlotte is not. Among the 19 local ZIP codes where Bozmanfix has at least 30 measured repairs, the medians run from 294 dollars in 28227 (Mint Hill and Charlotte) to 327 dollars in 28226 (Charlotte). That is a spread of 1.11, against 1.21 in Jacksonville, 1.32 in South Florida, 1.40 in Atlanta and 1.51 in Tampa Bay.

Thirty-three dollars separates the most expensive Charlotte neighborhood from the cheapest. In Tampa Bay the same gap is 154 dollars. Your ZIP code tells you almost nothing about your likely bill here, which is unusual enough in Bozmanfix data to be worth stating plainly.

The most likely explanation is age, not geography. The Charlotte metro added housing faster than almost anywhere in the country over the past twenty-five years, and several of our cheapest ZIP codes are fast-growth districts such as Fort Mill, Matthews and Rock Hill. Newer machines fail in cheaper ways.

They fail on a pump, a switch or a belt rather than on a sealed system or a discontinued board, and the parts are current production rather than special order.

Nearly a third of this metro is in South Carolina

Charlotte is one of the few American metros where the state line runs through the middle of ordinary daily life, and our call log shows it. 1,048 of our 3,459 local service calls, 30.3 percent, are in South Carolina, nearly all in York and Lancaster counties, meaning Rock Hill, Fort Mill, Indian Land, Tega Cay, Clover, Lake Wylie and York.

Crossing the line changes nothing. Six dollars separates the two medians. We do not charge a different rate, add a surcharge or run a different schedule south of the border, and Rock Hill is not a fringe of our coverage: at 457 calls it is our second-busiest community in this metro after Charlotte itself.

Charlotte humidity and water: what they do to your appliances

Humidity. Charlotte mornings average 81 percent relative humidity and afternoons 51 percent, according to long-term 1961 to 1990 averages compiled from the World Data Center for Meteorology (table of US city humidity). In a Charlotte summer that damp air finds two weak points. A refrigerator in a garage or a warm kitchen sweats along the door edges, and a torn or flattened door gasket lets the moisture inside, where it turns to frost on the back wall of the freezer and makes the defrost heater and timer work harder. In the laundry room, a dryer pulling in humid air needs longer cycles, and a partly blocked vent stretches every load further.

Water hardness. Charlotte Water draws from Mountain Island Lake and Lake Norman on the Catawba River. Its 2025 Annual Drinking Water Quality Report lists total hardness at an average of 32 parts per million, a range of 27 to 35, which is about 1.9 grains per gallon (Charlotte Water 2025 water quality report). That is soft water, so heavy mineral scale is rarely why a dishwasher or washer fails on the city system. With soft water the more common problem is too much detergent: glasses come out cloudy or etched, and front-load washers build residue and smell. Using less detergent usually fixes it, and if it does not, a drain pump, filter or inlet valve is the next thing a technician checks. Towns on other water systems and homes on private wells can test differently.

What breaks in the Charlotte metro

How this table counts: a row holds the repairs with a part whose job tags name that appliance (oven and range includes cooktop). Of the 1,611 repairs with a part behind the 311 dollar median, 1,011 name an appliance: the 1,032 row entries above plus 24 ice maker and freezer repairs, less 45 double entries for the 44 repairs that name more than one appliance. The other 580 name no appliance (396 have no tags at all, the rest a brand or another label).

The one appliance where the Charlotte answer differs from the rest of our markets is the built-in wall oven.

A freestanding range can be swapped by two people in an afternoon, but a wall oven has to match an existing cabinet cutout, which narrows the replacement field to a handful of models and adds an installer to the bill. In that situation repair almost always wins on arithmetic, and we quote it that way.
