Wikipedia says the town was founded in 1837 with the establishment of Davidson College, and that its western edge follows the shoreline of Lake Norman. The town sits in Mecklenburg and Iredell counties. The census counted 10,944 residents in 2010 and 15,106 in 2020, a 38 percent rise.

The 28036 ZIP code is mostly not the town. The Census Bureau’s 2020 ZIP-to-place file shows only 25.3 percent of its land inside Davidson, 68.7 percent outside any city or town and 5.9 percent in Kannapolis.
