A refrigerator repair where a part is replaced runs a median of $395, and most land between $319 and $507. There is exactly one exception that changes the arithmetic, and it is the compressor. Everything else on a refrigerator sits in a band you can plan around.
What each refrigerator repair costs
Refrigerators are the appliance we are called out to most, at 32.5 percent of all repairs. Because of that the component-level picture is unusually well populated, and the pattern in it is worth understanding before anyone quotes you a number.

Median full ticket: part, labour and the service call together, from 4,182 completed refrigerator and freezer repairs. Look at the first six rows. A temperature sensor and a fan motor are wildly different components with wildly different part prices, and the finished bills are thirty-six dollars apart. That is because the service call and the labour make the ticket, not the part. It is also why a shop quoting you “just the part” over the phone is quoting something that has little to do with what you will pay.
Then look at the last row. A compressor is two and a half times anything else, because it is hours of work on a sealed refrigerant circuit rather than a component swap. This is the whole repair-or-replace decision in one line.
Compressor or everything else
When we tell a customer the compressor has failed, just under half go ahead with the repair. Across 458 diagnosed compressor failures, 49.6 percent were approved. That is not people being talked out of anything. On a unit already eight or more years old, a $956 repair against a new appliance is a genuinely close call, and we would rather you make it with the number in front of you.
For every other diagnosis the calculation is not close. A $386 sensor or a $422 fan motor on a working refrigerator is a fraction of replacement cost, and refrigerators that get their component faults fixed generally keep going. Matching the symptom to the likely cause
These are the patterns that come up most on our calls. None of them is a diagnosis on its own, but they tell you roughly which end of the price table you are looking at.
- Fresh food side warm, freezer still cold. Most often the evaporator fan or the defrost system, not the compressor. Sits in the $395 to $422 area.
- Frost building up at the back of the freezer. Defrost heater or timer. The frost eventually blocks airflow to the fresh food side, which is why this often arrives as two complaints at once.
- Running constantly and never quite cold. Check the door seal first, it is visible and free to inspect. If the gasket is intact, it points at the condenser fan or a refrigerant problem.
- Warm and completely silent. Start relay or the compressor itself. The distinction between a $389 repair and a $956 one is exactly here, and it needs testing.
- Clicking every few minutes, then nothing. Classic start relay behaviour. The compressor tries to start, the relay fails, it cuts out on overload.
- Water pooling under the crisper or on the floor. Blocked defrost drain or the water inlet valve. Nuisance-level cost, not a sealed-system problem.

Check the temperature before you book
A surprising share of “not cooling” calls turn out to be a setting or a loading problem, and it costs you nothing to rule that out. A refrigerator should sit at or below 40°F and a freezer at 0°F. Anything above that in the fresh food compartment is a food safety issue as well as a comfort one.
Two things that mimic a fault. First, a refrigerator packed solid blocks the vents between compartments, and the symptom is uneven cooling that looks exactly like a failing fan. Second, putting a large volume of hot food straight in raises the internal temperature for hours and makes the compressor run continuously. Worth knowing before anyone opens the back. The sealed refrigerant circuit is not a place to experiment. Refrigerant is under pressure, the lines are brazed rather than bolted, and opening the system without recovery equipment is both illegal to vent and unrecoverable without a full recharge. Start relays and capacitors also hold a charge after the unit is unplugged. Everything behind the rear access panel is technician work.
How a refrigerator visit works

- The technician tests the unit on site: temperatures at both compartments, airflow, the defrost cycle, compressor start behaviour and the sealed system if the symptoms point there.

Refrigerator repairs peak in summer
Refrigerator work is the most seasonal of anything we do apart from dryers. July is the peak at 11.8 percent of the year’s refrigerator calls, October the floor at 6.3 percent, and the summer months carry 33.1 percent of the annual volume against 20 percent in winter. July runs about 1.74 times higher than January.
The reason is not mysterious. Ambient heat is load. A condenser that has been coping with a partially blocked coil all winter stops coping when the kitchen is at 85°F, and a garage or second refrigerator, which is already the hardest-working unit in most homes, goes from marginal to failed. Built-in and premium units
Built-in refrigerators are a different job from freestanding ones, and the price table above understates them. Three things drive that. The unit is integrated into cabinetry, so access alone can take an hour before any diagnosis starts. Parts are model-specific and frequently on order rather than on the van. And the sealed systems are built to a different standard, which is why a compressor on a premium built-in lands at $1,300 to $1,700 rather than $956.
The trade-off runs the other way on the replace side of the decision. A freestanding refrigerator can be swapped in an afternoon. A built-in cannot: replacement means matching the cabinet opening, the panel and often the water line, and the appliance itself costs several times a freestanding equivalent. That is why built-in owners repair at a much higher rate than the roughly 50 percent approval we see on compressors generally, and why it is usually the right call.
