What 51,000 repairs taught us about appliances

We publish what our own service records show, because the numbers are more useful than adjectives. Everything below comes from jobs our technicians actually completed across eight metros, not from an industry survey.

What a repair costs

These are medians — the full ticket with the part, the labor and the service call counted together.

ApplianceMedian repair
Ice maker$426
Refrigerator$394
Oven and range$380
Washing machine$358
Dryer$355
Cooktop$338
Dishwasher$335
Diagnostic visit$99, applied to the repair

Half the jobs on each appliance came in under that figure and half above it. Where the money goes is broken out further on our cost by part page — 46 components across 29,315 repairs — and on cost by brand, which shows the five biggest brands sitting within $32 of each other.

When appliances break

Breakdowns have a season. Across 51,634 service visits, July runs 49 percent busier than October, and ovens peak in November when everyone starts cooking for a crowd. The full pattern, appliance by appliance, is on when appliances break.

It matters for one practical reason: in the busy weeks the same-day slots go early in the morning. Off-season, you can usually get one at any hour of the day.

How often same-day actually happens

Plenty of companies advertise same-day service. We measured ours: across 63,970 real jobs, 23.1 percent were booked and done the same day, 52.4 percent same day or next, and Saturdays came in at 31.8 percent. The method and the full breakdown are on same-day repair rates.

How a visit works

You book online or by phone, and dispatch confirms a set arrival window rather than a whole day. The technician arrives with the common parts for your brand already in the van, which is why most repairs finish on that first visit.

Nothing is opened, ordered or replaced before you see the price. The tech tests the machine, names the part, writes down the total, and puts the cost of a comparable new unit beside it so the choice is arithmetic rather than a sales pitch.

The $99 service call covers the trip and the tests, and it comes off the bill the moment you approve the repair. Every finished job carries 90 days on parts and labor.

What we work on

Refrigerators and freezers, washers and dryers, dishwashers, ovens and ranges, cooktops, ice makers, microwaves, wine coolers and range hoods. Gas and electric, freestanding and built-in, plus commercial refrigeration for small businesses.

Whirlpool, Samsung, GE, LG, Frigidaire, Maytag, Bosch, KitchenAid, Kenmore, Amana and Electrolux are the everyday brands, and their common parts ride in the van. Sub-Zero, Wolf, Thermador, Viking, Miele, Gaggenau and JennAir are the premium lines our techs carry maker training for — those repairs cost more because the parts do, and the honest range is on luxury repair cost.

Eight metros, local technicians

Atlanta GA, Tampa FL, Jacksonville FL, Miami FL, Charlotte NC, Philadelphia PA, Dallas TX and Houston TX. Each metro has its own crew, its own phone number and its own Google profile, and the ratings on this page link straight to those profiles so you can read them where we cannot edit them.

Local matters more than it sounds. Hard water in Jacksonville and Atlanta kills ice makers and drain pumps early. Coastal salt air corrodes control boards. Summer storms take out electronics in predictable ways. A technician who works those streets every week recognises the pattern before he opens the machine.

Not sure we reach you? The service area page lists every city and ZIP we cover, and dispatch will confirm in a minute on the phone if you are on the edge of a metro.

Before you book

Have the model and serial number handy — it is on a sticker inside the door, behind the kick plate or on the back panel. Write down any error code before you clear it, because half of them vanish when the power is cycled. And clear a path to the machine: a fridge or a washer has to come out from the wall to be worked on.

If the appliance is still young, check the paperwork first. Most new machines carry a year on parts and labor from the maker, and five years or more on a sealed cooling system.
