Dishwashers are the cheapest appliance we repair, at a $338 median with most jobs between $275 and $419. They are also the appliance where a few details at booking tell the technician most about what to bring.
What each dishwasher repair costs
| Repair | Typical total | Based on |
|---|
| Spray arm | $283 | 12 repairs |
| Door latch or switch | $312 | 28 repairs |
| Door gasket | $330 | 42 repairs |
| Water inlet valve | $340 | 37 repairs |
| Drain pump | $350 | 273 repairs |
| Heating element | $362 | 40 repairs |
| Circulation motor | $374 | 122 repairs |
| Control board | $387 | 93 repairs |
| Detergent dispenser | $423 | 27 repairs |
Median full ticket: part, labour and the service call together, from 2,684 completed dishwasher repairs. Overall dishwasher median $338, middle range $275 to $419. Diagnostic visit with no part replaced $99.
The drain pump at 273 repairs and the circulation motor at 122 carry most of the volume. Everything else is a long tail of small parts, and the whole table spans $140 from cheapest to dearest, which is the narrowest range of any appliance we service.
What it costs by symptom
| Complaint | Typical total | Based on |
|---|
| Not draining | $325 | 416 repairs |
| Leaking | $340 | 331 repairs |
| Not cleaning properly | $348 | 112 repairs |
| Not drying | $360 | 33 repairs |
| Will not start | $362 | 86 repairs |
| Noise | $380 | 93 repairs |
Standing water and leaks together account for the majority of dishwasher calls we take.
Four things to tell us when you book
Each of these changes what the technician brings, and if nothing needs replacing, the $99 diagnostic is all you pay.
Standing water in the base. Tell us if water stays in the base after the cycle. Under the filter cylinder there is a coarse screen and a sump where glass fragments, seeds, labels off jars and bits of bone collect and stop the pump moving water, and the technician clears that before looking at the pump.
Dishes coming out dirty. Tell us whether it is the upper rack or the lower. Blocked spray-arm holes, or something tall in the lower rack stopping the upper arm rotating, is the single most common cause of a clean lower rack and a dirty upper one. Detergent that has hardened in the box also does this.
Water on the kitchen floor. Tell us where the water appears. A torn gasket, food packed into the gasket channel, or a machine tipped forward that leaks past a perfectly good seal all show differently.
Nothing happens when you press start. Tell us whether the door latch clicks firmly closed and whether the breaker, or the switch under the sink that controls the disposal and dishwasher circuit together, has been checked.
The extended version of the cleaning problem is on dishwasher not cleaning dishes, and leaks specifically on dishwasher leaking from the bottom. Standing water in the base after the cycle ends is on dishwasher not draining, and a machine that does nothing when you press start is on dishwasher will not start.
Matching the symptom to the likely cause
- Standing water after every cycle, filter clear. Drain pump at $350, or the drain hose. On a new installation, an air gap or a high loop that was never fitted correctly.
- Water in the base but the machine also will not fill. Water inlet valve at $340. Filling and draining are separate systems, and a fault in both usually means the control rather than either pump.
- Runs a full cycle but dishes are wet. Heating element at $362 on machines that heat-dry, or the rinse aid dispenser on condensation-dry machines. Many modern dishwashers dry by condensation rather than heat, and the technician confirms which type you have before testing the element.
- Grinding or humming during the wash. Circulation motor at $374, or something hard trapped in the impeller housing.
- Cycle starts then stops partway. Control board at $387 or a door latch losing contact when the machine heats and expands.
- Detergent box stays shut or opens late. Detergent dispenser at $423, the most expensive routine dishwasher repair, and the technician first confirms the box is not simply blocked by a tall item in the rack.
- Smell. Almost always food residue in the filter and the sump, which the technician clears on the visit.
Cheapest to fix of anything we repair
Because the dishwasher is the cheapest repair we do, the decision rarely turns on price. What decides it is the age of the machine: on one that is not near the end of its life, the repair is the easy call, and it gets the kitchen back to normal faster than shopping for a replacement and booking an install.
Dishwashers are the one appliance that peaks in winter
Every other appliance we service peaks in summer. Dishwashers invert the curve: January is the busiest month at 9.5 percent of the year’s dishwasher calls and September the quietest at 6.9 percent.
The mechanism is load rather than weather. Holiday cooking and full houses put more cycles through a machine in three weeks than it normally sees in two months, and the faults that were developing quietly surface under that. If you are hosting and the dishwasher has been marginal, dealing with it in November is considerably easier than finding a slot in the first week of January.

Hard water is the slow killer
Much of our service area runs hard water, and dishwashers show it before anything else in the kitchen does. Scale builds on the heating element and the spray arm holes, the machine washes progressively worse, and the owner concludes the appliance is failing when it is coated.
Two habits deal with most of it. Use a rinse aid, which is doing a chemical job rather than a cosmetic one in hard water. And run a descaling cycle with a dishwasher cleaner every few months. Both keep the machine washing well between visits.
How a dishwasher visit works
- You book online or by phone and pick a window.
- The technician runs the machine, checks the fill and drain path, the filter and sump, spray arm rotation, the door seal and latch, and reads any error codes.
- You get the full price before work starts, part and labour together.
- You approve the work or keep the diagnosis. Declining costs the $99 diagnostic and nothing more.
- Approved work carries a 90-day parts and labour warranty.
If the fault turns out to be a blocked filter or a spray arm, the technician clears it and shows you how to keep it clear, and no part goes in that was not needed.
What we repair
Built-in, drawer, portable and compact dishwashers, all major manufacturers. Built-in units in custom cabinetry take longer to access, and that shows up in the labour rather than as a separate charge. Expected lifespan and the point where replacement makes more sense is on how long dishwashers last.
Installation faults we find on newer machines
A dishwasher that has never worked properly since it was fitted is usually an installation problem rather than an appliance problem, and we see the same three regularly enough to list them.
The drain hose needs either a high loop under the counter or an air gap at the sink, depending on local code. Without one, sink water siphons back into the machine and the owner reports dirty water appearing between cycles. Second, a new disposal ships with the dishwasher inlet plugged from the factory, and if the installer does not knock that plug out the machine cannot drain at all from day one. Third, the levelling feet: a dishwasher tilted forward leaks past a perfectly sound door seal, and tilted back it holds a shallow pool that never clears.
None of those is a part failure, so on a machine less than a year old, particularly one that has misbehaved from the start rather than developing a fault, tell us when it was installed. The technician checks all three before testing any part.
Loading habits that look like faults
Two loading mistakes generate service calls on machines that are working correctly. Blocking the upper spray arm with a tall pot or a cutting board leaves the top rack dirty while the bottom comes out clean, which reads exactly like a pump losing pressure. And pre-rinsing everything spotless before loading actually makes cleaning worse on modern machines, because the detergent is formulated to bind to food residue and without it the enzymes have nothing to act on. Scrape, do not rinse.

Frequently asked questions
How much does dishwasher repair cost?
The median dishwasher repair where a part is replaced is $338, with most jobs between $275 and $419 including parts, labour and the service call. That makes dishwashers the cheapest appliance we repair. Components run from $283 for a spray arm to $423 for a detergent dispenser, with the common drain pump at $350.
There is standing water in the bottom of my dishwasher. What is it likely to be?
Often the screen and sump under the filter cylinder, where glass fragments, seeds and labels collect and stop the pump moving water, and the technician clears that first. If it still holds water, the drain pump is the likely cause at a $350 median.
Why are my dishes still dirty after a full cycle?
Most often blocked spray-arm holes, limescale or debris, or something tall in the lower rack stopping the upper arm turning. If the arms are clear and turning, the circulation motor at $374 is next, and across 112 repairs for this complaint the median was $348.
My dishwasher will not start at all. What is usually wrong?
Tell us at booking whether the door latch clicks firmly closed, because most machines will not run if the latch does not register as shut, and whether the breaker and the switch under the sink that often controls the disposal and dishwasher together have been checked. Beyond those, the latch or switch at $312, or the control board at $387, are the usual causes.
Why does my dishwasher leave dishes wet?
On machines that heat-dry it is usually the heating element, a $362 repair. On condensation-dry machines, which most newer models are, drying depends heavily on rinse aid, and the technician checks the dispenser and the drying settings before quoting a part. Across 33 repairs for this complaint the median was $360.
Is a dishwasher worth repairing?
At a $338 median it is the cheapest repair we do, so on any machine that is not near the end of its life the arithmetic favours repair comfortably.
Why does my dishwasher smell?
Almost always food residue trapped in the filter and the sump, which the technician clears while checking for a slow drain that keeps the smell coming back. Between visits, a hot cycle with a dishwasher cleaner, and rinse aid in a hard water area, keep it away, since scale holds residue in the spray arms.
