An oven or range repair runs a median of $380, with most jobs between $307 and $494. One component accounts for more replacements than anything else in our entire workload across every appliance: the gas oven igniter, at 221 repairs and a $352 median.
What each oven and range repair costs
| Repair | Typical total | Based on |
|---|
| Bake or broil element | $325 | 89 repairs |
| Door hinge, latch or lock | $345 | 21 repairs |
| Switch, knob or touchpad | $349 | 29 repairs |
| Igniter, gas | $352 | 221 repairs |
| Temperature sensor | $357 | 12 repairs |
| Spark module or electrode | $358 | 15 repairs |
| Thermostat | $420 | 23 repairs |
| Door gasket or seal | $460 | 11 repairs |
| Control board | $475 | 89 repairs |
Median full ticket: part, labour and the service call together, from 1,879 completed oven and range repairs. Overall median $380, middle range $307 to $494. Diagnostic visit with no part replaced $99. Double wall ovens are $150 to diagnose because both cavities have to be tested and accessed separately.
Where a general “not heating” complaint was recorded without the component specified, the median was $377 across 202 repairs, which sits neatly between the element and the thermostat and reflects that it is usually one of those two.
The igniter is the most replaced part we fit
Across every appliance we service, no single component comes up more often than the gas oven igniter. It fails in a specific and recognisable way, which is worth knowing because it is easy to misread as a control fault.
An igniter does not usually die outright. It weakens. As it ages it draws less current, and the gas valve is opened by that current rather than by the control board, so a weak igniter glows convincingly while never pulling enough amperage to open the valve. The oven looks like it is trying. What you see is a long preheat that gets longer over months, then a preheat that never completes, then nothing. People commonly replace the thermostat or suspect the board at that point, and the actual fix is a $352 part.
The tell is time. If your gas oven used to preheat in ten minutes and now takes twenty-five, the igniter is going, and there is no configuration or cleaning that reverses it.
Temperature that is off, and what it is not
An oven running hot or cold by twenty-five degrees is one of the most common complaints we take, and one of the most misdiagnosed.
First, a working oven cycles. It overshoots the set point, drops below it, and reheats, and a thermometer read at one moment can easily be twenty-five degrees off target while the appliance is behaving exactly as designed. Before concluding anything, put an oven thermometer in the centre, set 350°F, and read it several times across half an hour rather than once.
What is actually free to check. Confirm the oven is not in a delayed-start or sabbath mode. Check the door closes flush and the seal is intact, because heat escaping past a failed gasket produces a permanently cool oven. And give it the full preheat time rather than trusting the beep, since many ovens signal ready before the cavity has stabilised.
Where the temperature genuinely is wrong, it is usually the sensor at $357 or the thermostat at $420. We should be plain about one thing: there is no separate calibration service on our price list. Where the fix is on the spot, you pay the $99 diagnostic and nothing else. Detailed symptom walkthroughs are on oven temperature off and oven temperature issues.
Matching the symptom to the likely cause
- Gas oven takes far longer to preheat than it used to. Igniter, $352. The single most common repair we fit.
- Electric oven does not heat at all. Bake element, $325. Often visible: look for a blister, a break or a burn mark on the element itself.
- Broil works, bake does not, or the reverse. The failed element is the one that does not work, since they are separate circuits.
- Cooktop burners light, oven does not. On a gas range these are separate systems. Working burners tell you the gas supply is fine and point straight at the oven igniter.
- Burners click but will not light. Spark module or electrode, $358, or moisture and spilled food in the igniter cap.
- Display dead or buttons unresponsive. Touchpad at $349 or control board at $475, and worth trying a full power cycle at the breaker for two minutes first.
- Door will not close flush or sags. Hinge or latch at $345. This also explains a cool oven, so it is worth fixing before assuming a heating fault.
- Self-clean cycle killed the oven. Common enough to mention. The extreme heat of a self-clean cycle frequently takes out the thermal fuse or the control board, so if the oven died right after cleaning, that is the connection.
Gas is not a trial-and-error appliance. A gas oven that will not light should not be repeatedly cycled in the hope it catches, because each attempt releases gas into the cavity. If you smell gas at any point, do not operate switches or lights, leave the property and call the utility from outside. Gas valves, supply connections and spark modules are technician work. Oven repairs peak in November
Ovens invert the pattern of every other appliance we service. November is the peak at 12.3 percent of the year’s oven calls, February the floor at 6.2 percent.
The mechanism is discovery rather than wear. An oven that has been drifting cool or preheating slowly since spring goes unnoticed while it is used for weeknight dinners, then gets asked to hold 325°F for six hours in the third week of November and fails in front of guests. Nothing changed in the appliance that month. What changed is that someone finally needed it to perform.
The practical consequence is that our November and December slots fill fastest of any time in the year. If your oven has been behaving oddly, October is the cheap month to deal with it.

How an oven visit works
- You book online or by phone and pick a window.
- The technician tests actual cavity temperature against the set point, checks the element or igniter draw, the sensor, the door seal and latch, and reads any error codes.
- You get the full price before work starts, part and labour together.
- You approve the work or keep the diagnosis. Either way that visit is the $99 diagnostic and nothing more.
- Approved work carries a 90-day parts and labour warranty.
Where the fix is on the spot, the visit costs $99 and there is no additional charge for adjustment or advice. On ovens that is worth knowing, because temperature complaints frequently turn out to be normal cycling behaviour.
What we repair
Gas and electric ranges, single and double wall ovens, slide-in and freestanding ranges, and built-in premium units from Wolf, Viking, Thermador, Miele and Sub-Zero alongside the mainstream manufacturers. Double wall ovens carry the $150 diagnostic. Cooktops as a separate appliance are covered on our cooktop repair page, and gas ranges specifically on gas range repair. Expected lifespan is on how long ovens last.
Built-in and professional ranges
Professional-style ranges from Wolf, Viking and Thermador are a different job from a freestanding range, and the difference is mostly access and parts rather than complexity of diagnosis. These units are heavy, built into cabinetry, and their components are model-specific rather than generic, which means a part is more often ordered than carried. The diagnosis itself is the same work.
The replace side of the decision barely exists on these units. A professional range costs several times a mainstream one and is fitted into an opening built for it, so almost any repair is worth doing. That is the opposite of the calculation on a ten-year-old freestanding range, where a $475 control board starts to compete with a new appliance.
What actually shortens oven life
Three habits account for most of the avoidable damage we see. Running the self-clean cycle frequently is the largest: it is the hottest thing the appliance ever does, and it is hard on the thermal fuse, the door lock mechanism and the board. Once or twice a year is reasonable, monthly is not.
Second, lining the oven floor with foil to catch spills. It blocks the airflow the cavity is designed around, reflects heat back at the bake element and, on gas ovens, can obstruct the burner. It causes uneven cooking that then gets reported as a temperature fault.
Third, slamming the door or using it as a shelf while loading heavy trays. The hinges carry the door seal, and a sagging door is a permanently cool oven at $345 to put right.

Frequently asked questions
How much does oven repair cost?
The median oven or range repair where a part is replaced is $380, with most jobs between $307 and $494 including parts, labour and the service call. Components run from $325 for a bake element to $475 for a control board, with the very common gas igniter at $352. A diagnostic visit with no part replaced is $99, and double wall ovens are $150 to diagnose.
My gas oven takes forever to preheat. What is that?
Almost certainly the igniter, a $352 repair and the single most replaced component in our entire workload at 221 repairs. Igniters weaken rather than fail outright: as one ages it draws less current, and because that current is what opens the gas valve, the igniter glows convincingly while never letting enough gas through. A preheat that has stretched from ten minutes to twenty-five is the classic sign.
My oven temperature is off by 25 degrees. Do I need a repair?
Possibly not. A working oven cycles above and below the set point, so a single thermometer reading can be 25 degrees out while the appliance behaves exactly as designed. Set 350°F, put a thermometer in the centre and read it several times over half an hour. If it is genuinely wrong, the sensor at $357 or the thermostat at $420 are the usual causes.
Do you charge separately to calibrate an oven?
No. There is no separate calibration charge on our price list. If the technician finds nothing that needs replacing, you pay the $99 diagnostic and nothing more.
My cooktop burners light but the oven will not. Why?
On a gas range the burners and the oven are separate systems, so working burners confirm the gas supply is fine and point directly at the oven igniter at $352. It is a helpful piece of information to give when booking, because it narrows the diagnosis before the technician arrives.
My oven stopped working right after a self-clean cycle.
That connection is real and common. The extreme heat of a self-clean cycle frequently takes out the thermal fuse or stresses the control board. Mention the self-clean when you book, because it changes where the technician looks first.
Why are oven repairs hardest to book in November?
November is our peak month for oven calls at 12.3 percent of annual volume, against 6.2 percent in February. Nothing changes in the appliance: an oven that has been drifting cool since spring is only noticed when it is asked to hold temperature for hours during holiday cooking. If yours has been behaving oddly, October is the easier month to get a slot.
