A freezer repair runs a median of $385, with most jobs between $302 and $500. What makes a freezer different from every other appliance on this site is that the contents have a value of their own, and a delayed decision can cost more than the repair.

What each freezer repair costs

RepairTypical totalBased on
Defrost heater or timer$364203 repairs
Door gasket or seal$38977 repairs
Thermostat or temperature sensor$39081 repairs
Evaporator or condenser fan$396135 repairs

Compressor replacement$700107 repairs

Median full ticket: part, labour and the service call together, from 2,269 completed freezer repairs. Overall median $385, middle range $302 to $500. Diagnostic visit with no part replaced $99.

By symptom, a freezer that is not freezing has a $377 median across 488 repairs. Ice maker faults inside freezers run separately: leaking ice makers are $380 across 515 repairs, and no ice at all is $420 across 348.

The compressor question is different here

A standalone freezer compressor costs $700 to replace against $956 in a refrigerator. The difference is simpler plumbing: one compartment, one evaporator, no dual-zone controls or dispenser lines to work around.

That gap matters for the decision. A $700 repair on a chest freezer that cost less than that new is not worth doing, and we will say so. A $700 repair on a large upright or a garage freezer bought in the last few years usually is. Freezers are declined 43.9 percent of the time, well above our 37 percent average, and the compressor cases are most of that.

The contents are part of the maths

This is the practical difference between a freezer and any other appliance we service. A full chest freezer holds several hundred dollars of food, sometimes considerably more if it is a hunting season or a bulk-buy household. That changes two things.

First, response time is worth paying attention to. A sealed, undisturbed full freezer holds safe temperature for roughly 48 hours after it stops running, and about 24 hours if it is half full. That is your actual window, and it is why we treat freezers as urgent scheduling alongside refrigerators.

Second, a repair that looks marginal against the appliance price is rarely marginal against the appliance plus the contents. Do the arithmetic with the food included.

What to do first while you decide. Keep the lid or door shut. Every opening costs you hours of the window above. If the unit will be down for more than a day, move what you can into a working refrigerator freezer or pack it with dry ice rather than opening repeatedly to check. Do not refreeze anything that has fully thawed and risen above 40°F.

Matching the symptom to the likely cause

Check the temperature before booking

A freezer should hold 0°F. Above that, food degrades in quality long before it becomes unsafe, so “things seem softer than they used to be” is a genuine early warning rather than imagination.

Put a thermometer in the middle of the load, not against a wall, and leave it several hours rather than reading immediately. Two things routinely mimic a fault: a unit packed so tightly that air cannot circulate, and one with too little in it, because thermal mass is what keeps a freezer stable between compressor cycles. A half-empty chest freezer benefits from filling the gap with jugs of water. Target temperatures for both compartments are on ideal refrigerator and freezer temperature.

The sealed system is technician work. Refrigerant lines are brazed and under pressure, venting refrigerant is illegal, and opening the circuit without recovery equipment means a full recharge afterwards. Start relays and capacitors also hold a charge after the unit is unplugged. Anything behind the rear access panel needs instruments and certification.

Chest or upright changes what fails

Chest freezers are mechanically simpler. Most are manual-defrost with no heater, no timer and no evaporator fan, which removes the most common failure we see on uprights. Cold air sits in them rather than being circulated, so they hold temperature longer during a power cut and are more efficient. What they bring instead is drain blockages and gasket failure along a large lid, plus the fact that they are harder to organise, which means the door stays open longer on every visit.

Upright freezers are usually frost-free, which means a defrost heater, a timer and a fan, and those three account for a large share of the $364 and $396 rows in the table above. The convenience costs you components that can fail. The comparison in full is on upright versus chest freezers.

Freezer failures cluster hard in summer

June is the peak at 12.5 percent of the year’s freezer calls, January the floor at 5.0 percent. That ratio, two and a half to one, is among the sharpest seasonal curves in our workload.

The cause is where these appliances live. Standalone freezers sit in garages, utility rooms and porches, spaces with no air conditioning, and a compressor rejecting heat into 95°F ambient air has a far harder job than the same unit in a 70°F kitchen. A condenser coil furred with dust that coped through winter stops coping in June. That is also the cheapest preventable failure on this page: vacuuming the coils at the back or underneath takes ten minutes once a year.

How a freezer visit works

  1. You book online or by phone. Freezers get priority scheduling for the same reason refrigerators do, because the contents are on a clock.
  2. The technician checks actual temperature, the defrost cycle, airflow, the door seal, the condenser and the compressor start behaviour.
  3. You get the full price before work starts, part and labour together.
  4. You approve or decline. Declining costs the $99 diagnostic and nothing more.
  5. Approved work carries a 90-day parts and labour warranty.

What we repair

Chest and upright freezers, frost-free and manual-defrost, garage-rated units, drawer freezers and built-in freezer columns, plus the freezer side of combination refrigerators. All major manufacturers. Refrigerator-freezer combinations are covered on refrigerator repair, and expected service life on how long freezers last.

Garage-rated is not marketing

A standard freezer put in an unheated garage will misbehave in winter as well as summer, and most owners are surprised by the winter half. The thermostat in a conventional unit senses the freezer compartment, and when the surrounding air drops below about 40°F the compressor stops being called for at all. The cabinet then drifts up toward ambient temperature, and in a cold snap the contents can partially thaw inside a freezer that appears to be working perfectly.

Garage-rated units have a second sensor or a heater specifically to handle that, which is why they cost more. If you have a standard freezer in an unconditioned space and it behaves oddly at both temperature extremes, that is the explanation, and no repair changes it.

Maintenance that actually matters

Three things, and none of them is a service we sell. Vacuum the condenser coils once a year, at the back or underneath depending on the model, because dust is insulation on the one surface that needs to shed heat. Check the door or lid seal by closing it on a sheet of paper and pulling: if the paper slides out freely, the gasket is not holding, and at $389 the seal is far cheaper than the compressor it is overworking.

And keep the unit reasonably full. Thermal mass is what holds temperature between compressor cycles, so a half-empty freezer runs more often and recovers more slowly after the door is opened. Jugs of water in the empty space cost nothing and do the same job as food.

Frequently asked questions

How much does freezer repair cost?

The median freezer repair where a part is replaced is $385, with most jobs between $302 and $500 including parts, labour and the service call. The most common repair, a defrost heater or timer, is $364. A compressor replacement is $700. A diagnostic visit with no part replaced is $99.

How long will food stay frozen if the freezer stops working?

Roughly 48 hours in a full freezer that stays closed, and about 24 hours if it is half full. Every time you open it you spend part of that window. If the unit will be down longer, move the contents to a working freezer or pack with dry ice rather than checking repeatedly. Do not refreeze anything that has fully thawed and risen above 40°F.

Is it worth repairing a freezer?

Component repairs between $364 and $494 are comfortably worth doing on any freezer in reasonable condition. A $700 compressor replacement is the genuine decision point, and it depends on the unit: not worth it on a small chest freezer that cost less than that, usually worth it on a large upright or a recent garage model. Include the value of the contents in the calculation, because a full freezer often holds more food than the repair costs.

Why is there so much frost inside my freezer?

On a frost-free unit that means the defrost system has failed, usually the defrost heater or timer at a $364 median, our most common freezer repair. It gets progressively worse because the frost blocks airflow, so the compartment cools less well as it builds. On a manual-defrost chest freezer, frost is normal and just needs periodic defrosting.

My ice cream is soft but everything else seems frozen.

That is a real diagnostic signal rather than imagination. It means the freezer is holding somewhere around 10 to 15°F instead of 0°F, warm enough to soften ice cream while keeping denser food solid. Usually a temperature sensor at $390 or a partially blocked evaporator.

Why do freezers fail more in summer?

June is our peak month at 12.5 percent of annual freezer calls against 5.0 percent in January. Standalone freezers usually live in garages and utility rooms with no air conditioning, and a compressor rejecting heat into 95°F air works far harder than the same unit in a cool kitchen. Vacuuming the condenser coils once a year is the cheapest way to prevent it.

Is a chest freezer or an upright more reliable?

Chest freezers are mechanically simpler: most are manual-defrost with no heater, timer or fan, which removes the failure modes behind our two most common upright repairs. Uprights are frost-free and more convenient, and those extra components are what fail. Neither is better in the abstract, they trade convenience against parts count.
