What 1,492 Philadelphia-area service calls look like

Every number on this page comes from our own completed work in this metro, not from an industry survey. Of those 1,492 visits, 670 ended with a part replaced, which is 44.9 percent of everything we were called out to. The rest split between repairs that needed nothing but an adjustment, appliances that turned out to be worth replacing rather than fixing, and visits that stopped at the diagnostic.

The median Philadelphia-area repair where a part was replaced is 312 dollars, and that figure covers the part, the labor and the service call together, not just the part. A quarter of those repairs came in under 245 dollars, and a quarter ran above 387 dollars. Seventy-three visits closed at exactly the 99 dollar diagnostic, because the honest answer that day was that the appliance did not need a part.

That 312 dollar median puts this metro in the middle of our map. Charlotte runs cheaper at 288 dollars, Atlanta sits at 333, and Jacksonville is our most expensive area at 368. The reason is not that we price Pennsylvania differently. We run one price list everywhere. It is the mix of what breaks here, and in this metro that mix is unusual in two specific ways that are worth spelling out.

The only market we run where GE leads

Across every metro we serve, one brand usually sits at the top of the repair list and it is almost always Samsung or Whirlpool. Atlanta, Tampa Bay, South Florida and Texas all lead with Samsung at somewhere between 23 and 24 percent of branded work. Charlotte and Jacksonville lead with Whirlpool at 23 and 25.6 percent.

The Philadelphia area is the exception, and it is not a close call. GE accounts for 33.9 percent of the branded appliances we repair here, which is both the highest share of any brand in any market we work in and the widest gap between first and second place. Whirlpool is second at 17.2 percent, Samsung third at 15.5 percent, Frigidaire fourth at 13.1 percent and Maytag fifth at 10.8 percent. Counted on 297 branded jobs.

This matters for what a repair costs you, because brands are not interchangeable on parts. GE keeps parts available for a long time and prices them moderately, which is one of the reasons the median bill here lands where it does rather than higher. It also means our vans carry a different stock in this metro than they do in Florida, and it is why a GE fridge fault in Doylestown is more likely to be a one-visit fix than the same fault on a brand whose parts run through a single distributor.

The practical version: if you own GE, Whirlpool, Frigidaire or Maytag, which is three quarters of the branded work we do here, the odds that we have the part on the van or can get it in a day are good. If you own a European built-in, expect the honest conversation about lead time before we start.

More dishwashers than anywhere else on our map

The second thing that makes this metro different is the appliance mix. Counting only the jobs where exactly one appliance was on the ticket, so the mix is not distorted by two-appliance visits, dishwashers are 24.4 percent of the work here. That is the highest dishwasher share of any market we run. Tampa Bay sits at 12.5 percent, South Florida at 14 percent, Jacksonville at 15.5 percent, Charlotte at 18.1 percent and Atlanta at 19.7 percent.

Refrigerators still come first at 39.1 percent, as they do everywhere. But the gap between the fridge and the dishwasher is narrower in the Philadelphia area than anywhere else we work, and that pulls the whole metro median down rather than up, because a dishwasher repair is the cheapest common job on our list.

Read the dishwasher line carefully, because it is the one that saves people money. At a 246 dollar median, a dishwasher repair is worth doing on almost any machine that is not visibly rusting through, and the 99 dollar diagnostic comes off that total. A replacement dishwasher plus installation does not start anywhere near 246 dollars. The refrigerator line is the opposite case: at 391 dollars the repair is still usually the right call, but it is the appliance where we most often tell a customer that a fifteen year old unit with a failed sealed system is not worth the parts.

What the bill looks like, town by town

Nineteen communities in this metro have given us at least ten paid repairs each, which is where we start trusting a town-level number rather than the metro average. The spread between them is real but it is not dramatic, and it tracks housing stock more than it tracks postcode prestige.

The city itself is one of the cheapest places in the metro to get an appliance fixed, at a 285 dollar median across 80 paid repairs. That surprises people who assume city work carries a city premium. It does not, because the city job mix leans toward rowhome kitchens with mid-market brands and toward dishwashers and washers rather than large built-in refrigeration.

Newtown at 420 dollars and Cherry Hill at 397 dollars sit at the other end, and both for the same reason: larger kitchens, more counter-depth and built-in refrigeration, and more double wall ovens. The middle half of the Newtown bills runs from 312 to 619 dollars, the widest band in the metro, which is what a mix of ordinary repairs and built-in work looks like in one number.

Where our coverage goes

The dense part of our map here is Bucks County and the Main Line. The single busiest postcode on our record in this metro is 19067, which covers Yardley and Morrisville, with 85 visits. Next is 19087 around Wayne and Strafford with 78, then 18974 in Warminster with 52 and 18966 in Southampton with 42. Abington and Glenside sit behind those at 38 visits in 19038, and Havertown follows with 37 in 19083.

Beyond those, the work spreads thin and wide: 145 communities in total, which for a metro of this size means we are covering the suburbs properly rather than clustering around one depot. We cross the river into South Jersey as well, where Cherry Hill, Mount Laurel, Maple Shade, Evesham and Medford make up most of the 121 New Jersey visits on this record.

We run one price list across the whole area. The 99 dollar diagnostic is the same in Philadelphia proper as it is in Doylestown, it comes off the bill when you approve the repair, and there is no separate trip charge for the outer suburbs. Same-day service is real here but it is not universal: 18.6 percent of visits in this metro went out on the same day the call came in. The pattern is straightforward. Calls that come in early in the morning usually get a slot that day, calls that arrive late in the afternoon usually get the next morning, and we would rather tell you the truth at booking than book you in and reschedule.
