🏆 Technician-Ranked 🔧 68,864 Service Calls Analyzed 📊 JD Power 2025 Data 📅 2026 Update
Written by Bozmanfix TeamReviewed by Eugen, Appliance Repair Technician, 5+ yearsUpdated October 2026

In Yale Appliance’s 2026 service-rate study of 33,190 first-year service calls, the most reliable appliance brands were Speed Queen (3.7% needed service in the first year), LG (5.5%) and Miele (7.4%), with Bosch, GE Profile and GE Appliances also under 10%. Bozmanfix adds what its 68,864 service calls from January 2023 to October 17, 2026 show about which brands come through the door – a different question from reliability, explained below.

What “Reliable” Actually Means

Reliability is not a single number. A brand can build a great washer and a mediocre fridge, and the same badge can mean two different machines depending on which factory and which model year it came from. We rank on three things a repair technician sees every day:

  • Repair frequency – how often a brand needs a service call in the first several years.
  • Lifespan – how long it runs before a major failure. See our appliance lifespan guides for the figures by category.
  • Parts availability and repairability – whether it can be fixed affordably, or whether parts are scarce, proprietary and expensive.

That third factor is the one buyers almost never weigh, and it is the one that decides what a fault actually costs you. Two machines can fail at the same rate and cost wildly different amounts to keep running. These rankings describe typical reputations across model lines; any single model can beat or miss its brand’s average. Brand-specific repair: Maytag appliance repair.

Most Reliable Appliance Brands Overall (2026)

No independent body publishes a single reliability ranking for every brand. The two public sources with real data are Yale Appliance, a Boston-area retailer that publishes the share of each brand it had to service in the first year after sale, and J.D. Power’s annual appliance studies of owner-reported problems. Yale’s 2026 figures:

BrandServiced in the first year (Yale Appliance)
Speed Queen3.7%
LG5.5%
Miele7.4%
Also under 10%Sharp, Gaggenau, Bosch Benchmark, GE Profile, LG Studio, Bosch, Signature Kitchen Suite, GE Appliances

Read it with Yale’s own caveats: it covers only brands Yale sells and services, only the first year after sale, and only Greater Boston, Cape Cod and Southern New Hampshire. Brands Yale does not sell are not in it, so a brand missing from the list is not a brand that failed it.

What Our Own Repair Jobs Show

Here is the part most reliability articles cannot give you: which brands we are actually called out to repair. Across the 34,756 of our 68,864 service calls (January 2023 to October 17, 2026) where the brand was recorded, these brands generated the most calls.

BrandShare of branded repair calls
Samsung21.6%
Whirlpool21.0%
GE18.6%
Frigidaire10.0%
Maytag7.9%
LG7.9%
⚠️ Important – do not confuse this with reliability. A brand generating many service calls mostly reflects how many of its units are installed in homes (market share and popularity), not that it is unreliable. Whirlpool shows high service volume simply because it is everywhere. Read this table as “most common in the field,” not “worst.”

By category, the single most-serviced brand shifts: Samsung leads refrigerators, washers and dryers; Whirlpool leads ovens; GE leads dishwashers, stoves and cooktops; Frigidaire leads freezers. Full breakdown in our appliance repair statistics report and most commonly repaired appliances data.

Most Reliable Refrigerator Brands

Refrigerators are where the published data is least kind to everyone. Yale Appliance found French door refrigerators among the most service-prone appliances of any brand, usually because of the ice maker. What differs by brand is how long the maker stands behind the sealed system: Samsung covers its digital inverter compressor for 10 years of parts, LG its linear compressor for 10, Whirlpool and GE’s Profile and Café lines the sealed system for 5 years parts and labor, and Sub-Zero sealed system parts for 12. A standard refrigerator lasts about 13 years according to the NAHB, whatever the badge.

If a refrigerator has already stopped getting cold, the brand-specific diagnosis is more use than any ranking: LG refrigerator not cooling, Samsung refrigerator not cooling, Whirlpool refrigerator not cooling and Frigidaire each start from the fault that is most common on that platform, with the median invoice for it.

Most Reliable Washer and Dryer Brands

Speed Queen had the lowest first-year service rate of any brand in Yale Appliance‘s 2026 study, 3.7%, and the maker tests every model to 10,400 cycles, which it equates with 25 years in an average home. Yale also found washers and dryers among the categories that hold up best, especially front-load laundry from LG, GE and Miele.

J.D. Power’s 2025 reliability study, as reported by SlashGear, found GE washers with the fewest owner-reported problems in both the front-load and top-load segments, and clothes dryers and cooking appliances with the fewest problems of any category, at 56 per 100 units – so a dryer from almost any reputable brand is a safe bet.

Laundry failure patterns split by brand as well. For a dryer that tumbles without heating see Maytag, Whirlpool, LG, Samsung and GE. For a washer that will not empty see GE, Whirlpool, LG and Samsung.

Most Reliable Dishwasher Brands

In J.D. Power’s 2025 reliability study, as reported by Hunker, KitchenAid dishwashers had the fewest owner-reported problems, with Bosch and GE close behind; a separate J.D. Power study the same year ranked Bosch highest for dishwasher owner satisfaction. Miele tests its dishwashers for the equivalent of 20 years of use, which Miele says is not a guarantee, and Yale Appliance put Miele third of all brands at 7.4% first-year service.

The commonest dishwasher complaint we are called out to is a tub that will not empty, and what is usually behind it differs by brand: Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, Bosch and Frigidaire each have their own first suspect.

Most Reliable Oven and Range Brands

Ranges are the longest-lived appliances in the kitchen, at about 13 years electric and 15 gas according to the NAHB, and J.D. Power’s 2025 reliability study put cooking appliances, with dryers, at the lowest problem rate of any category. Yale Appliance found professional ranges among the most service-prone appliances, usually the igniters. In J.D. Power’s 2025 satisfaction study, Whirlpool ranked highest for cooktops. Wolf, Thermador and Viking are built to be serviced rather than replaced, which is what keeps a pro range running.

Why Parts Availability Decides the Real Cost

This is the factor that separates a technician’s view of reliability from a review site’s. Two machines can fail at exactly the same rate and cost you completely different amounts over ten years, because what matters once something breaks is whether the part exists, what it costs, and how long it takes to arrive. From our repair records: what breaks by brand.

On that second point Bozmanfix’s own records are blunt: the five most common brands sit within $32 of each other at the median repair, as set out in appliance repair cost by brand.

Whirlpool, Maytag and GE sit at the top of the mainstream tier partly for an unglamorous reason: their platforms change slowly, parts are interchangeable across model years, and every supplier stocks them. A pump or a control board for a five-year-old Whirlpool washer is usually on the truck. That means a one-visit repair at a predictable price.

At the other end, brands that redesign aggressively or use heavily proprietary assemblies can leave you waiting on a single component with no substitute. The failure rate looks similar on paper; the experience does not. Sealed-system and inverter-driven components in particular tend to be model-specific, which is why a fault in one can turn into a multi-day job rather than an afternoon.

🔧 How to check this before you buy: search the model number plus the word “parts” and see whether independent suppliers list common components – pumps, valves, thermostats, control boards. If only the manufacturer sells them, expect longer waits and higher prices for the life of the machine.

What Actually Fails First, by Appliance

Brand aside, each category has a characteristic weak point. Knowing it tells you what a given brand’s reputation is really about.

Refrigerators

The sealed system – compressor, evaporator, condenser – is the expensive failure, and it is also the rarest. Far more common are the parts around it: defrost heaters and thermostats, evaporator fan motors, door seals, and above all ice makers. Ice-making assemblies are the single most complaint-generating sub-assembly in modern refrigeration across every brand, which is why brands with the most feature-rich dispensers pick up the most complaints.

Washers

Drain pumps and door or lid switches fail first, and both are inexpensive. The failure that ends a machine is a bearing or spider-arm going in the outer drum, because the repair approaches the price of a new unit. Front-loaders carry more of that risk than top-loaders, which is consistent with J.D. Power’s finding that front-load washers report the most problems of any appliance category.

Dryers

Belts, idler pulleys, drum rollers and thermal fuses – all cheap, all straightforward. This is why dryers are the most reliable category and why almost any reputable brand is a safe purchase. Most “dryer failures” are actually restricted venting rather than a broken dryer at all.

Dishwashers

Wash pumps, drain pumps, spray-arm bearings and door seals. Electronics on the control board are the other common failure, and this is where premium brands earn their reputation: a serviceable, replaceable board keeps a fifteen-year-old machine viable.

Ovens and ranges

Bake and broil elements, igniters on gas models, temperature sensors and door hinges. All are inexpensive and all are replaceable, which is exactly why ovens last as long as they do. An oven rarely dies; it drifts out of calibration and gets replaced by someone who did not know it could be fixed.

Which Brands Are Most Repair-Prone?

Being honest matters more than being flattering. The published data points less at brands than at features. Yale Appliance found French door refrigerators and professional ranges the most service-prone appliances of any brand, usually because of ice makers and igniters, and older LG units carry a linear-compressor history. The cheapest builder-grade and generic lines are where thin components fail early.

J.D. Power’s 2025 study adds an important modern twist: connected Wi-Fi and Bluetooth appliances averaged 87 problems per 100 units, more than their non-connected equivalents, as reported by Hunker. None of this makes any brand bad; it means more electronics are more things that can fail.

It means you should budget for a service call or two and buy from a retailer with a solid warranty.

The connectivity finding is the one most worth acting on, because it is a choice rather than a brand. Every additional sensor, board and radio is another component that can fail, and unlike a pump or a belt, a failed communication board can disable functions that have nothing to do with the internet.

If you do not need remote control of your dishwasher, the non-connected version of the same model is statistically the more reliable purchase.

💡 The single best reliability move is not the brand – it is maintenance. A well-maintained mid-range appliance routinely outlasts a neglected premium one. Our seasonal appliance checkup guide covers the specific habits that add years to each appliance.

Reliable Does Not Mean Never Breaks

Even the most reliable brands need occasional service, and when they do, they are usually worth repairing precisely because they are built well. Bozmanfix’s own numbers back this up: the median completed repair costs just $277, a fraction of a new appliance.

A Whirlpool fridge, Bosch dishwasher, or Speed Queen washer that develops a fault after eight to ten years almost always deserves a repair over replacement, since the rest of the machine has years of life left.

That is the flip side of buying reliable: the repair math stays in your favour for a long time.

Access to service is part of reliability too, and it is the part a spec sheet never shows. Bozmanfix offers same-day service in every metro it covers. A well-built appliance backed by a technician who can actually get to it is a different proposition from the same appliance with a three-week wait.

How booking works by metro is in our same-day appliance repair study.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most reliable appliance brand overall?

In Yale Appliance’s 2026 study of 33,190 first-year service calls, Speed Queen had the lowest service rate at 3.7%, then LG at 5.5% and Miele at 7.4%, with Bosch, GE Profile and GE Appliances also under 10%. Yale covers only brands it sells, the first year after sale, and the Boston area.

Which refrigerator brand is the most reliable?

No source ranks refrigerator brands on reliability alone; Yale Appliance found French door refrigerators among the most service-prone appliances of any brand, usually because of the ice maker. What differs is coverage: Samsung and LG cover their inverter and linear compressors for 10 years of parts, and Sub-Zero sealed system parts for 12.

What is the most reliable washer and dryer brand?

Speed Queen had the lowest first-year service rate of any brand in Yale Appliance’s 2026 study, 3.7%, and the maker tests every model to 10,400 cycles. In J.D. Power’s 2025 reliability study, GE washers had the fewest owner-reported problems in both front-load and top-load, and dryers had the fewest problems of any category at 56 per 100 units.

Which dishwasher brand lasts the longest?

In J.D. Power’s 2025 reliability study, KitchenAid dishwashers had the fewest owner-reported problems, with Bosch and GE close behind. Miele tests its dishwashers for the equivalent of 20 years of use, which it says is not a guarantee, and Yale Appliance put Miele at 7.4% first-year service.

Which appliance brands are the least reliable?

The published data points more at features than at brands: Yale Appliance found French door refrigerators and professional ranges the most service-prone, usually ice makers and igniters, and J.D. Power found connected Wi-Fi appliances averaged 87 problems per 100 units. The cheapest builder-grade lines fail earliest across every category.

Do smart appliances break more often?

Yes. J.D. Power’s 2025 reliability study found Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connected appliances averaged 87 problems per 100 units, more than non-connected ones. If you do not need remote control, the non-connected version of the same model has fewer parts that can fail.

Are expensive appliance brands more reliable?

Often yes for durability. Premium brands like Miele, Sub-Zero, and Wolf use serviceable, higher-grade parts and last far longer. But maintenance matters more than price: a well-maintained mid-range appliance frequently outlasts a neglected premium one.

How do I check parts availability before buying?

Search the exact model number together with the word “parts” and see whether independent suppliers list common components such as pumps, valves, thermostats and control boards. If only the manufacturer sells them, expect longer waits and higher prices for the life of the machine. Lifespan, running costs and failure patterns for each appliance type are collected in our appliance guide library.

Should I repair or replace a reliable-brand appliance?

Usually repair. A well-built appliance that fails partway through its life still has years left in the rest of the machine, so a single-part repair is almost always cheaper than replacement. Bozmanfix’s own data puts the median completed repair at $277. Our repair versus replacement guide covers the threshold.

What are the best appliance brands to buy?

On the published reliability data, Speed Queen, LG and Miele had the lowest first-year service rates in Yale Appliance’s 2026 study, with Bosch and GE also under 10%; in J.D. Power’s 2025 study GE led washers and KitchenAid dishwashers. How the appliance is installed and used still matters as much as the badge, and so does whether parts are easy to get.

What is the best brand for kitchen appliances?

It depends on the appliance. For dishwashers, KitchenAid had the fewest problems in J.D. Power’s 2025 study, with Bosch and GE close behind; for cooktops Whirlpool ranked highest in J.D. Power satisfaction; for refrigerators no source ranks brands on reliability alone. Buy per appliance rather than one brand for the whole kitchen, and weigh parts availability.

Which kitchen appliances are the most durable?

According to the National Association of Home Builders, gas ranges last longest at about 15 years, then electric ranges, refrigerators and dryers at about 13, freezers at 11, washers at 10, and dishwashers and microwaves at 9. Within each type, simpler models win: the fewer electronic boards and touch panels an appliance carries, the fewer things can end its life early, and boards are among the more expensive parts to replace on any brand. That is why a basic model often outlives the feature-heavy one bought at the same time.

Appliance Broken – Reliable Brand or Not?

No brand is immune to the occasional fault. Bozmanfix diagnoses and repairs every major brand – Whirlpool, LG, Samsung, GE, Bosch, Sub-Zero, Wolf and more – same-day and next-day, with a $99 diagnostic waived when you approve the repair.
