In our records Bosch is a dishwasher brand, and almost nothing else. Across 578 Bosch service visits, 346 of them were dishwashers. That is 59.9% of the brand, and no other manufacturer we service is anywhere near that concentrated: KitchenAid is second at 24.4%, and Whirlpool, with ten times the total volume, sits at 10.6%.
That single number shapes this whole page, because Bosch dishwashers fail along lines set by two engineering decisions Bosch took and most American brands did not: no food grinder in the sump, and no exposed heating element in the tub.
The one-appliance brand
Every brand we service has a shape. Samsung brings us refrigerators and dryers, Whirlpool brings washers, GE brings a bit of everything because there is a GE of everything in American kitchens. Bosch brings dishwashers, and the concentration is not close.

Two design decisions that explain most Bosch calls
1. No food grinder, so the filter is yours to clean
Most American dishwashers historically put a grinder in the sump: food goes in, gets chopped, leaves down the drain, and nobody thinks about it. Bosch went the other way with a manual filter assembly — a coarse strainer, a fine mesh and a central cylinder that twist apart by hand.
That choice is a large part of why a Bosch runs as quietly as it does. There is no macerator making noise, because there is no macerator.
The cost is that the filter is a maintenance item, and in most homes nobody has ever been told so. Grease and soft debris load the fine mesh, flow through the sump drops, and the machine starts reporting drainage faults or leaving film on the load. Drainage is the single biggest reason we see a Bosch dishwasher: 67 of 346 visits, 19.4% of the brand’s dishwasher work. A meaningful share of those visits end with the filter cleaned, the drain path cleared and no part replaced at all.
2. Condensation drying, no exposed element
There is no glowing element in the bottom of a Bosch tub. Drying is done by condensation: the stainless interior stays cooler than the load, the final rinse comes out hot, and moisture condenses on the wall and runs down.
Heat for the wash cycle comes from a flow-through heater in the circulation circuit, which on many models is built into the circulation pump assembly rather than sitting alone as a replaceable element.
Two consequences follow, and both show up in our data. First, plastics coming out damp is how the machine is designed to behave, especially without rinse aid — which is why only 4 of 346 Bosch dishwasher visits were about drying at all, far below what we see on brands with a heated dry cycle.
Second, when the heater side genuinely fails, it is usually replaced as an assembly, which is why the small number of heat-related Bosch repairs in our records sit at the upper end of the brand’s range rather than at the cheap end.
3. The base tray is watching
Bosch dishwashers carry a leak-protection system: a shallow tray under the tub with a float switch in it. If water reaches that tray from anywhere — a weeping hose clamp, a hairline crack in the sump, a door seal that has torn — the float rises, the control assumes a leak and puts the machine into a protective state where it drains continuously and refuses to start a cycle.
That is the E15 fault, and it is by a wide margin the code Bosch owners quote to us most often.
The fault codes we actually see
Bosch is unusual among mainstream brands in that owners tell us the code. 79 of 578 Bosch visits, 13.7%, quote a fault code in the customer’s own words when they book — the display is legible, people write it down, and it goes straight into the job. Here is the distribution.

Four of the five commonest codes are about water leaving the machine. That is the same story the symptom counts tell from the other direction, and it is the practical takeaway for any Bosch owner: on this brand, the drain path is where the trouble lives.
Where a part was replaced on an E15 visit, the median bill was $311 across 16 such repairs — parts, labour and the service call together.
Codes appearing once or twice in our records — E13, E17, E18, E21, E31 — are model-specific and we do not publish meanings for them. A technician reads them against the fault table for your exact model number rather than against a general list, and so should you before spending money on a part.

The shares do not add to 100% because a booking can name two problems and many name none beyond the brand and the appliance. Medians here rest on between 6 and 37 completed repairs each, so read the ordering rather than the last dollar.

The headline here is that a Bosch dishwasher is cheaper to repair than the average dishwasher, not dearer: $305 against $328 across every dishwasher brand we service, on 163 and 2,337 completed repairs respectively.
The premium price on the showroom floor does not carry through to the repair bill, because what fails is the same short list on every dishwasher ever built — drain pump, circulation motor, inlet valve, door latch, control board — and the labour to reach them is much the same.
Bosch also has the lowest lower quartile of any brand in our records at $265, which is the same finding stated a different way: the typical Bosch job is a modest one. The tail is real though, with the largest single Bosch repair in our records at $2,312 and 8 of 296 repairs above $1,000.

Bosch owners approve the repair more often than average
When we diagnose a fault and quote it, 69.5% of Bosch customers go ahead across the brand as a whole. On Bosch dishwashers specifically the figure is 63.9%, against 60.6% for dishwashers across every brand we service, so the brand is above average on like-for-like comparison and well above it once refrigeration and cooking are counted in.
That runs against the intuition that cheap repairs get approved and expensive ones get refused, and it fits what we found when we looked at the question across every appliance we touch: the price of the repair does not predict the decision, the cost and disruption of replacement does.
A Bosch dishwasher is a fully integrated machine sitting in a cabinet run, often with a custom panel, frequently one of a matched set. Replacing it is not a Saturday errand, and the owner knows it. A $305 repair against that alternative is an easy call, which is exactly what the approval figure shows.
Bosch beyond the dishwasher
Refrigeration — 63 visits, median repair $435, the dearest Bosch category we have. Bosch refrigeration in American homes is mostly counter-depth and built-in, which means panels come off and go back on without marking a surround, and it means the sealed system, evaporator fan and defrost circuit sit behind them.
Approval on this category runs at 84.4%, the highest of any Bosch category, for the same reason as above: a fitted refrigerator is measured to an opening.
Laundry — 56 washer visits and 19 dryer visits. Bosch laundry in the United States is overwhelmingly the compact 24-inch format, which is why we meet it in condos, city apartments and second-floor closets rather than in basements.
The dryers are ventless condensation machines, so a complaint that clothes come out warm and damp needs the condenser and its filters checked before anything is condemned, and there is no vent run to blame.
These units are usually stacked, and a stacked set is a $150 diagnostic because the top machine has to be separated to reach anything. Our washer median is $388 across 32 repairs; the dryer sample is 14 repairs, below our fifteen-repair floor, so we are not publishing a figure for it.
Cooking — 50 visits, median $400, middle half $320 to $672. That upper quartile is the widest of any Bosch category and it is electronics: induction generators and oven control boards are the expensive end of this brand. Wall ovens and induction cooktops also carry an installation penalty, since a fitted appliance has to be drawn out of the cabinetry before it can be worked on.
Across all of it, four in five Bosch visits are in Florida and Georgia, with the rest spread across North Carolina, Texas, Pennsylvania and South Carolina.

Why is my Bosch dishwasher not draining?
Drainage is the largest single category of Bosch dishwasher work we do, 67 of 346 visits. Bosch has no food grinder, so the three-part filter has to be cleaned by hand and often never has been.
Check the filter first, then the drain hose, then the air gap on the sink deck if you have one, and if a garbage disposal was fitted recently check that the knockout plug in its dishwasher inlet was removed.
If all of that is clear, the drain pump or its circuit is next, and that is a technician job.
Why does my Bosch dishwasher leave dishes wet?
