Whirlpool Appliance Repair

Whirlpool is the most evenly spread brand we service, and the one with the widest internal contradiction. Across 5,950 Whirlpool service visits no single appliance accounts for even a quarter of the work — refrigerators 24.0%, washers 22.4%, dishwashers 10.6%, ranges 9.1%, dryers 8.6%.

Yet inside that one brand, often inside one laundry room, the decision owners make splits harder than anywhere else in our data: 83.8% of quoted Whirlpool dryer repairs are approved against 53.4% of washer repairs. Same brand, same house, same day, thirty points apart. This page is about why.

83.8% vs 53.4% Whirlpool dryer repairs approved against Whirlpool washer repairs — the widest split between two appliances of one brand in our records 332 completed dryer repairs and 513 completed washer repairs within 5,950 Whirlpool visits

The brand with no centre of gravity

Most brands have a shape. Bosch is a dishwasher company in our records, Samsung brings refrigerators and dryers, Sub-Zero brings exactly one thing. Whirlpool brings everything, in roughly the proportion American kitchens contain it, which is what happens when a manufacturer has been the volume default for decades.

Ice maker$372$327–4044074.1%
All Whirlpool repairs$348$290–4132,76763.8%

Two things stand out before anything else. The spread between the dearest and cheapest Whirlpool category is $60, which is nothing — on premium brands the same gap runs to hundreds. And the approval column moves far more than the price column does, which is the whole story of this brand.

Why the dryer gets fixed and the washer gets replaced

A Whirlpool dryer is a drum, a belt, an idler pulley, a motor, a heat source and two or three safety thermostats. Almost everything that fails is mechanical, reachable, and cheap relative to the machine. Our dryer repairs have the narrowest middle half of any Whirlpool category — $285 to $384 — because there is very little in a dryer that can produce a surprising bill.

When we quote one, the number is boring and the customer says yes: 83.8%, the highest approval rate of any Whirlpool category and one of the highest of any brand-appliance pair we service.

The washer sits at the other end. Modern top-load Whirlpool machines carry a suspension system, an electronically commutated motor, a motor control board and a main control board, and the diagnosis genuinely matters: the same symptom can be a $325 belt or a $416 board.

Add that a washer is the appliance most likely to be leaking onto a floor when it fails, and the household is making a decision under pressure rather than at leisure. 53.4% approval is the result, the lowest of any Whirlpool category.

💡 This is the same finding we published across every brand, seen from inside one of them. The washer is not refused because it is expensive — at $362 it is cheaper than the refrigerator, which is approved at 68.6%. It is refused because a washer is a freestanding box that any store will deliver on Saturday, while a refrigerator is a fitted, measured, food-filled commitment. Replacement cost and disruption drive the decision, not repair price.

One platform, four badges

Whirlpool Corporation also owns Maytag, KitchenAid and Amana, and those machines are not merely related — they share platforms, components and service procedures to a degree that matters when a technician walks in. A lid lock, a drain pump or a suspension rod is frequently the same part with a different sticker, which is why a technician who knows the platform is not learning four appliances.

Our own pricing shows the family resemblance rather than a badge premium: Whirlpool at $348 median, Maytag $343, Amana $325. KitchenAid sits well above them at $427, and that gap is about where those machines are installed — built-in, integrated, panel-ready, more labour to reach — not about a fundamentally different machine underneath. The full comparison across twelve brands is on our repair cost by brand page.

We keep LG and Whirlpool factory-trained technicians on staff, which on this brand family is worth more than it sounds: platform training on Whirlpool carries directly into Maytag, KitchenAid and Amana work.

What actually fails, with prices

Whirlpool is one of the few brands where we hold enough volume to publish component-level pricing rather than category averages. These are medians of the complete bill — part, labour and the service call together — across completed Whirlpool repairs, and every row below rests on at least fifteen jobs.

Component replacedMedian repairMiddle halfRepairs
Door gasket or boot seal$302$256–43330
Drive belt$325$278–37262
Defrost heater or timer$332$285–42944
Heating element$332$301–37878
Door latch or lid lock$337$267–39623
Drum roller or idler$338$297–40233
Thermostat or sensor$339$298–40147
Igniter$341$314–38638
Drain pump$346$316–43438
Suspension, shocks or struts$352$316–38254
Drive motor$388$350–47434
Detergent dispenser$405$366–49632
Water inlet valve$418$347–51934
Control board$416$368–51587

Read the top and bottom of that table together, because it is the most useful thing on this page. The cheapest and dearest routine Whirlpool repairs are $302 and $418, a spread of about $116, and the service call plus labour is inside both of them.

The part is rarely what makes the bill; reaching it is. That is why a belt and a board cost so much less differently than their parts prices suggest, and why guessing at a part before diagnosis usually costs money rather than saving it.

The control board row deserves its own note: at 87 repairs it is the most frequently replaced single component on this brand and also the dearest routine one. It is still not the majority of anything — 87 out of 2,767 repairs. A quote that reaches for the board first, without the sensor and wiring checks that come before it, is worth a question.

Component pricing across 46 parts and 29,315 repairs, all brands, is on our repair cost by part page.

Fault codes on Whirlpool

Whirlpool moved to a two-part code format on its newer platforms: a function code and a sub-code, written as F3E1 or F7E1, where the first half names the system and the second half narrows the fault inside it. Older machines show a single code such as F21 or F01.

The codes we see quoted most often at booking are F21 and F20 on the drain and fill side, F01 and F09 on the control side, F3E1 and F3E2 on sensors, F5E3 on the lid lock, F7E1 on the drive motor, and F9E1 on drainage, together with the plain-language LF long-fill indication.

Two cautions on codes. They name a circuit, not a part: F7E1 says the machine is not seeing the rotation it expects, which can be the motor, the control board driving it, or something jamming the basket. And the same string means different things across platforms, so a code should be read against the fault table for your model number rather than against a general list.

Where a Whirlpool visit mentioned a code of any kind, the median repair came to $375 across 182 completed repairs, above the brand median, which is what you would expect from faults that involve electronics rather than a worn belt.

What brings us out on a Whirlpool

Washer will not spin$3162584.3%
Door or lid$3322604.4%
Will not drain$3202323.9%

Shares do not add to 100% because a booking can name several problems and many name none beyond the brand and the appliance.

Noise leading the table is worth pausing on: it is the symptom people tolerate longest and the one that most often turns out to be cheap when caught early — a dryer idler, a washer suspension rod, a refrigerator evaporator fan. Left alone, the same faults take the bearing or the motor with them.

🔶 Free things worth doing before you book. On a dryer that has stopped heating, check the vent run before anything else; a blocked vent cooks thermostats and heating elements, and replacing the element without clearing the vent buys you a few months. On a washer that will not spin, take the load out and redistribute it, then check that the machine is level and the shipping bolts were removed if it was ever moved. On a refrigerator not cooling, pull it out and look at the condenser coils and the condenser fan. None of that costs anything, and between them they account for a real share of the calls we drive out to.

Where Whirlpool costs land

The whole brand sits inside a narrow band: median $348, middle half $290 to $413, across 2,767 completed repairs. Only 15 of those 2,767 exceeded $1,000, which is 0.5% — the flattest distribution of any brand we hold volume on, and the practical meaning is that a Whirlpool quote very rarely surprises anybody.

The visit itself is $99, applied to the repair when you approve it, $150 on stacked laundry and double wall ovens because they must be separated to be reached, and it comes straight off the invoice the moment you approve the repair. Terms are on the pricing page.

Four in five Whirlpool visits are in Florida and Georgia, with the rest across Texas, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and South Carolina.

Key figures, stated for citation

  • 83.8% of quoted Whirlpool dryer repairs are approved against 53.4% of washer repairs — thirty points apart inside one brand, and the washer is the cheaper repair of the two.
  • $348 median across 2,767 completed Whirlpool repairs, middle half $290 to $413, with only 0.5% above $1,000.
  • No Whirlpool appliance is even a quarter of the brand’s work — refrigerators 24.0%, washers 22.4%, dishwashers 10.6%, ranges 9.1%, dryers 8.6% of 5,950 visits.
  • The cheapest and dearest routine Whirlpool repairs are $302 and $418, a $116 spread, because the service call and labour sit inside both.
  • The control board is the most replaced single Whirlpool component at 87 repairs and a $416 median, and still only 3% of all Whirlpool repairs.
  • Noise is the most common reason we are called to a Whirlpool, 527 visits, ahead of a refrigerator not cooling at 523.
  • Whirlpool, Maytag and Amana price almost identically to repair — $348, $343 and $325 medians — while KitchenAid at $427 is dearer for installation reasons rather than mechanical ones.
  • Whirlpool visits naming a fault code run to a $375 median across 182 completed repairs, above the $348 brand median.
Methodology Figures come from Bozmanfix’s own job records across Florida, Georgia, Texas, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and South Carolina through August 2026. The Whirlpool set is 5,950 service visits carrying a Whirlpool equipment tag, of which 4,710 were completed and 2,767 involved a replaced part; those 2,767 are the basis for every median. A visit counts as diagnostic-only where the customer paid the diagnostic and no part was replaced, and the approval figure is repairs divided by repairs plus diagnostic-only visits. Medians include the part, the labour and the service call together, which is why they sit well above parts-only prices published elsewhere. Each visit is assigned to one appliance category. Component rows rest on at least fifteen completed repairs each and are identified from the job record, so they undercount rather than overcount. Fault codes are counted from the customer’s own booking text. Cross-brand comparisons carry their own denominators and live on our cost by brand and approval rate pages. Service call counts reflect how many of these machines are installed in the homes that call us and how often they call; they are not a reliability ranking and should not be read as one. Bozmanfix is an independent appliance repair company and is not affiliated with, authorised by or endorsed by Whirlpool Corporation.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Whirlpool appliance repair cost?

A median of $348 across 2,767 completed Whirlpool repairs, with the middle half between $290 and $413. By appliance: refrigerator $381, washer $362, range $346, dryer $334, dishwasher $321. Only 0.5% of Whirlpool repairs exceed $1,000. Prices include the part, the labour and the service call together, and the $99 diagnostic comes off the repair when you approve it.

Is a Whirlpool washer worth repairing?

Our median Whirlpool washer repair is $362 and the middle half runs $308 to $414, so most washer repairs are a fraction of a replacement. Owners still approve washer repairs less often than any other Whirlpool category, at 53.4%, because a washer is easy to replace rather than because the repair is expensive.

If the machine is under about ten years old and the fault is a pump, a belt, a lid lock or a suspension rod, repair is normally the better arithmetic.

Why is my Whirlpool dryer not heating?

On an electric dryer the usual suspects are the heating element, a thermal fuse and the cycling and high-limit thermostats; on a gas dryer, the igniter and the gas valve coils. Our median heating element repair is $332 and igniter $341, complete. Check the vent run first, because a restricted vent is what kills those parts, and replacing the element without clearing the vent means doing it again.

Whirlpool dryer repairs are approved at 83.8%, the highest rate of any category we service on this brand.

What does F21 or F3E1 mean on a Whirlpool?

Newer Whirlpool platforms use a two-part code, such as F3E1, where the first half names the system and the second half narrows the fault inside it; older machines show a single code such as F21. A code names a circuit rather than a part, and the same string can mean different things across platforms, so it should be read against the fault table for your model number.

Whirlpool visits that quoted a code ran to a $375 median repair across 182 completed jobs, above the $348 brand median.

Are Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid and Amana the same machines?

They are the same corporation and share platforms, components and service procedures to a large extent, which is why a technician trained on one works efficiently on the others. Our repair medians reflect that: Whirlpool $348, Maytag $343, Amana $325. KitchenAid at $427 is dearer mainly because those machines are more often built in and integrated, which is labour to reach rather than a different mechanism.

How much is a Whirlpool control board?

Our median control board repair on Whirlpool is $416 complete, with the middle half between $368 and $515, across 87 repairs. It is the most frequently replaced single component on the brand and also the dearest routine one, but it is still only about 3% of all Whirlpool repairs. Sensors, wiring and connections should be checked before a board is condemned.

Do you have Whirlpool factory-trained technicians?

Yes, we have LG and Whirlpool factory-trained technicians on staff. On this brand family that training carries across Maytag, KitchenAid and Amana as well, because those machines share platforms and service procedures with Whirlpool.

Are you an authorised Whirlpool service centre?

No. Bozmanfix is an independent appliance repair company and is not affiliated with, authorised by or endorsed by Whirlpool Corporation. Our own record on the brand is 5,950 Whirlpool service visits across six states. If your appliance is still inside its factory warranty, contact Whirlpool first, because warranty work should go through their network.

Whirlpool acting up?

On this brand the bill is usually predictable and the diagnosis is what decides whether you fix it or replace it. The $99 diagnostic tells you which one you are looking at, and it comes off the repair when you approve it.
