Why GE Washers Stop Draining

Cancel the cycle and try a drain and spin on its own. Select the shortest drain or spin-only option and listen. A buzz means the pump has power and is jammed. Silence means power is not reaching it or it has failed outright. That single observation splits the diagnosis in half.
Check the load is not simply unbalanced. A duvet or a bundle of towels on one side of the drum makes the machine abort the spin, and on some cycles it will not complete the drain either. Open the lid, redistribute everything evenly, and run drain and spin again.
Look behind the machine at the drain hose. Pull the washer forward if you can and check for a kink or a crushed section. Confirm the hose end sits in the standpipe without being jammed all the way down, and that it rises above the drum’s water level before it drops.
Test the standpipe on its own. Pour a bucket of water down it. If it backs up, the house drain is blocked and the washer is innocent — it is pumping into a full pipe. This test takes a minute and saves a wasted service call.
Check the lid or door lock behaves. Close it and listen for the lock to engage; on a front loader the door should be immovable during a cycle. If the machine drains but never spins, this is the branch to look at, not the pump.

What happens next depends on the item. Soft blockages — a child’s sock, a face cloth — usually stall the impeller completely, so you get a loud buzz and no water movement at all. Hard items sometimes let it turn slowly while destroying the vanes, and that produces the slow drain that steadily gets worse over weeks. Underwires are the worst case in both directions: they can jam a pump completely, and they can score the housing so it leaks afterwards.

On front loaders there is a second collection point. The rubber boot seal around the door has a fold at the bottom that traps coins, hairgrips and grit before they ever reach the pump. Why the Same Fault Comes Back

Repeat no-drain visits are rarely a bad part. They are debris that was not fully removed, or a habit that has not changed.

The first pattern is partial clearing. A sock is pulled out of the pump, the machine drains, and everyone is satisfied — but there was grit and lint behind the sock in the sump and the hose, and it works its way into the impeller over the following weeks. The third is siphoning, and it is the one people misread most. If the drain hose sits too low or is pushed too far into the standpipe, water that has been pumped out flows back in by gravity. How Long Draining Should Take, and What Normal Sounds Like

The drain phase is short. Expect the pump to clear the drum in roughly one to two minutes of continuous running, with the sound changing distinctly as the water level drops and air reaches the impeller. On many cycles the machine will drain, spin briefly, then drain again, which is normal — water is being wrung out of the load and has to go somewhere.

A pump running for three or four minutes and still leaving water in the drum is pushing against a restriction. A pump that buzzes at a constant pitch without the sound ever changing is jammed.
