GE Appliance Repair

🟢 4,987 GE service visits 📍 FL · GA · TX · NC · PA · SC 🧊 Refrigeration and electronics 💰 $99 diagnostic, applied to the repair

GE is the brand where the expensive part is almost always electronic. Across 4,987 GE service visits and 2,432 completed repairs, the median bill is $355 — squarely mainstream.

But the single most replaced component on this brand is the control board at 93 repairs and a $485 median, the dearest routine component of any volume brand we service, and the next dearest items are the condenser and evaporator fan assembly at $448 and the drive motor at $417.

On GE the mechanical parts are cheap and the boards are not, and that shapes both the diagnosis and the decision at the end of it.

One badge, four price tiers

GE is not one product line. The same name covers the entry-level range in a rental, the GE Profile that people buy when they redo a kitchen, the Cafe series built to be seen, and Monogram, which is a built-in luxury line competing with Sub-Zero and Wolf.

We meet all four under one tag, and the spread shows: the median GE repair is $355, but the largest single GE repair in our records is $4,030, and 1.1% of GE repairs exceed $1,000 — twice the rate we see on Whirlpool.

Practically, that means a GE quote depends on which GE you own to a degree that is not true of most mainstream brands. A freestanding range and a Monogram built-in refrigerator are not the same repair economy even though they carry the same three letters on the door.

Refrigeration is a quarter of everything we do on this brand — 1,289 visits, 25.8% — and it is also where the dearest work sits. The dishwasher is the cheapest thing to fix on a GE and one of the most common: GE is the dishwasher brand we are called to more than any other, accounting for the largest share of the dishwasher calls in which a brand is recorded.

The electronics premium, measured

Every brand has boards and every brand has belts. What separates GE is the gap between them. Here are the GE components we hold at least fifteen completed repairs on, as complete bills including the part, the labour and the service call.

Evaporator or condenser fan$448$398–50430
Control board$485$363–54793

The distance from the cheapest routine GE repair to the dearest is $167, from a belt at $318 to a board at $485. On Whirlpool the same span is $116.

It is not a dramatic difference in isolation, but it lands on the most common repair rather than a rare one: the control board is replaced more often on GE than any other single component, 93 times in 2,432 repairs.

💡 What to do with that. A board is a legitimate diagnosis and sometimes the only answer. It is also the easiest thing to reach for when a fault is intermittent. Before a board is condemned on a GE, the sensor it reads, the connector it reads through and the load it drives should all have been checked, because those three account for a large share of symptoms that look like a dead board. If a quote goes straight to the board without that, ask what was measured. Component pricing across 46 parts and 29,315 repairs, all brands, is on our repair cost by part page.

Refrigeration is where GE work concentrates

A GE refrigerator not cooling is the single most common thing we are called to on this brand: 623 visits, 12.5% of everything GE, median repair $401. Underneath that headline the pattern is specific.

Defrost circuits at $398 and fan assemblies at $448 together outnumber compressor work by a wide margin, which is the useful thing for an owner to know — a fridge that has stopped cooling is far more often a defrost or airflow fault than a dead sealed system, and those are the repairs that come in around $400 rather than four figures.

Frost build-up specifically shows up on 82 visits with a $400 median, and it is the symptom people wait longest on. A drain that has iced over or a defrost heater that has quit does not stop the fridge overnight; it degrades it, food starts freezing on the top shelf, and by the time it is called in the evaporator is packed solid.

It is the same repair either way, but it is a shorter visit when caught early. Our national guides on a refrigerator not cooling and frost build-up cover the mechanism in detail.

Ice makers are their own category on GE: 188 visits mentioning one, median $415 where a part was replaced. GE dispenser assemblies are more integrated into the door than most, which is why the labour on them runs higher than the part suggests.

The laundry split, again

GE repeats a pattern we found on Whirlpool and it holds across brands: the dryer is approved at 79.0% and the washer at 57.4%. The dryer is also the cheapest GE category to fix at $320. The washer is dearer at $376, but not dramatically, and it is refused far more often.

This is not customers reacting to price. It is customers reacting to what replacement costs them, and a washer is the easiest major appliance in the house to replace — a box, a standard opening, delivery on Saturday.

We looked at this across every appliance and brand we service and the correlation between repair price and refusal is essentially zero, and slightly negative: replacement cost and disruption drive the decision, not the repair bill.

Frost or freezing up$400821.6%

Shares do not add to 100% because a booking can name several problems and many name none beyond the brand and the appliance.

🔶 What to have ready when you book a GE. On a fridge that is not cooling, pull it out and look at the condenser coils and the condenser fan — a coil packed with dust and a fan that has stopped produce exactly the symptoms of a much more expensive fault. On a dishwasher not draining, clear the filter and check whether a recently fitted garbage disposal still has its knockout plug in place. On a dryer with no heat, check the vent run before anything else, because a blocked vent is what kills elements and thermostats in the first place. None of that costs anything.

A washer that fills and drains but never spins is a different fault from one that will not empty. See GE washer not spinning and GE washer not draining. A dryer that tumbles cold is a separate diagnosis again: GE dryer not heating.

Where GE costs land

Median $355, middle half $293 to $443, across 2,432 completed repairs, with 1.1% above $1,000 and one outlier at $4,030. Against the twelve brands we track, GE sits in the middle: dearer than Whirlpool at $348 and Frigidaire at $353, cheaper than Samsung at $375 and LG at $397. The full table is on our repair cost by brand page.

The visit is $99 and comes off the repair when you approve it, $150 on stacked laundry and double wall ovens because they have to be separated to be reached. You get a firm price for the whole job before any work begins. Terms are on the pricing page.

Four in five GE visits are in Florida and Georgia, with the rest across Texas, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and South Carolina.

  • Defrost and fan faults outnumber compressor work heavily on GE refrigeration — 52 defrost repairs at $398 and 30 fan assemblies at $448.
  • GE dryers are approved at 79.0% and GE washers at 57.4%, though the washer repair is only $56 dearer.
  • Refrigeration is 25.8% of GE work, the largest single category, and dishwashers 13.6%.
  • The spread from cheapest to dearest routine GE repair is $167 — belt $318 to board $485 — against $116 on Whirlpool.
Methodology Figures come from Bozmanfix’s own job records across Florida, Georgia, Texas, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and South Carolina through August 2026. The GE set is 4,987 service visits carrying a GE equipment tag, of which 4,004 were completed and 2,432 involved a replaced part; those 2,432 are the basis for every median. GE Profile, Café and Monogram machines are inside that tag and are not separated out, which widens the distribution at the top. A visit counts as diagnostic-only where the customer paid the diagnostic and no part was replaced, and the approval figure is repairs divided by repairs plus diagnostic-only visits. Medians include the part, the labour and the service call together, which is why they sit well above parts-only prices published elsewhere. Each visit is assigned to one appliance category. Component rows rest on at least fifteen completed repairs each and are identified from the job record, so they undercount rather than overcount. Cross-brand comparisons carry their own denominators and live on our cost by brand and approval rate pages. Service call counts reflect how many of these machines are installed in the homes that call us and how often they call; they are not a reliability ranking and should not be read as one. Bozmanfix is an independent appliance repair company and is not affiliated with, authorised by or endorsed by GE Appliances or Haier.

Frequently asked questions

How much does GE appliance repair cost?

A median of $355 across 2,432 completed GE repairs, with the middle half between $293 and $443. By appliance: refrigerator $398, washer $376, range $352, dishwasher $331, dryer $320. Prices include the part, the labour and the service call together, and the $99 diagnostic comes off the repair when you approve it.

How much is a GE control board?

Our median GE control board repair is $485 complete, with the middle half between $363 and $547, across 93 repairs. That is the dearest routine component of any volume brand we service and the most frequently replaced single part on GE. Before a board is condemned, the sensor it reads, the connector it reads through and the load it drives should all have been checked.

Why is my GE refrigerator not cooling?

It is the most common GE call we take, 623 visits, with a $401 median repair. On this brand defrost faults and fan assemblies vastly outnumber sealed-system failures: 52 defrost repairs at $398 and 30 evaporator or condenser fans at $448, against far fewer compressors.

Before booking, pull the unit out and check the condenser coils and condenser fan, because a blocked coil produces the same symptom as a much more expensive fault.

Is a GE dishwasher worth repairing?

Usually. The dishwasher is the cheapest thing to fix on this brand at a $331 median, and GE is the dishwasher brand we are called out to most often, so the parts and the procedures are familiar.

Approval on GE dishwashers runs at 61.7%. If the machine is under about eight years old and the fault is a pump, an inlet valve, a latch or a dispenser, the repair is normally the better arithmetic.

Do you repair GE Profile, Cafe and Monogram?

Yes, and they are inside the figures on this page rather than separated out, which is why the top of the GE distribution runs so much higher than the median: the largest single GE repair in our records is $4,030 and 1.1% exceed $1,000. Monogram in particular is a built-in line, so more of the bill is the work of reaching the fault than the part itself.

Why do people repair GE dryers but replace GE washers?

GE dryer repairs are approved at 79.0% and washer repairs at 57.4%, even though the washer repair is only $56 dearer at $376 against $320. The reason is not the repair price, it is that a washer is the easiest major appliance in the house to replace. We measured this across every appliance and brand we service and the relationship between repair price and refusal is essentially flat.

Are you an authorised GE service centre?

No. Bozmanfix is an independent appliance repair company and is not affiliated with, authorised by or endorsed by GE Appliances or Haier. Our own record on the brand is 4,987 GE service visits across six states. If your appliance is still inside its factory warranty, contact GE first, because warranty work should go through their network.

GE not behaving?

On this brand the diagnosis decides the bill, because a belt and a board are $167 apart and can present the same way. The $99 diagnostic tells you which one you have, and it comes off the repair when you approve it.
