LG Washer Not Draining: OE, dE, UE Codes and Repair Costs
An LG washer that will not drain has 6 usual causes, and the code on the display tells you which family you are in within 10 seconds. OE means the water did not leave, dE means the door was never confirmed locked, and UE means the machine refused to spin a load it could not balance — three completely different repairs that all end with wet laundry sitting in water. Across 2,770 completed washer repairs our median invoice is $365, parts and labour included. Brand-specific pricing and failures: LG appliance repair in metro Atlanta. LG Washer Showing OE?
We read the code, clear the pump filter and sump, and test the pump, the door lock and the pressure sensor in one visit. Atlanta, Tampa, Jacksonville, Miami, Charlotte.
Match What Your Washer Is Doing
Write down the code and note whether the pump makes any sound at all. Those two facts do more of this diagnosis than any tool.
| What you notice | Usual cause | Who fixes it |
|---|---|---|
| OE showing, pump hums or grinds | Blockage in the pump filter or impeller — coin, underwire, lint | You first, technician if it is inside the pump |
| OE showing, pump silent | Pump failed, or the control is not energising it | Technician |
| dE or a door code, drum full | Door lock not confirming, so the drain never starts | Technician |
| UE showing, water in the tub, laundry soaked | Unbalanced load the machine refused to spin — not a drain fault | You, redistribute the load |
| Drains slowly over several minutes, no code | Partial blockage, kinked hose, or slime narrowing the hose | You |
| Empties then refills on its own | Drain hose pushed too far into the standpipe, siphoning back | You, in five minutes |
| Front loader door will not open with water inside | Normal safety interlock — the water has to come out first | You, through the pump filter hose |
| Water on the floor, or a leak code | Split hose, failed pump seal or a cracked sump — unplug now | Technician, same day |
| Smells musty and has drained sluggishly for months | Detergent slime coating the sump and hose | You |
OE, dE and UE: Three Codes, One Puddle
LG is unusually clear about which stage failed, and using that is the fastest way to avoid paying for the wrong part. All three of these codes can leave you standing in front of a machine full of water and wet laundry, and they mean completely different things.
OE is a drain fault. The water level did not fall far enough within the time the cycle allows. It confirms the machine reached the drain step and asked the pump to run, which clears the door lock and the earlier cycle logic. What it does not say is why the water stayed — a packed filter, a jammed impeller, a kinked hose, a slimed hose and a blocked standpipe all produce exactly the same OE.
dE is a door fault. The control could not confirm the door was locked, so it never started the wash or the drain. The tub may be full simply because the cycle stopped where it was. Nothing is wrong with the pump, and replacing one changes nothing. A door lock typically totals $354 including labour and the visit. Full pricing from real invoices: LG washer error codes.
UE is a balance fault. The machine tried to spin, detected a load it judged too uneven to accelerate safely, redistributed it, tried again, and eventually gave up. It usually drains the water it can, but you are left with soaking laundry and often some water in the tub — which looks like a drain failure and is not one. A single heavy item like a bath mat or a duvet is the classic trigger.
Where LG Puts the Filter
Every LG front-load washer has a drain pump filter behind a small panel at the bottom front of the cabinet, with a short capped hose beside it for letting the water out. Both are meant for the owner, and in our experience most owners have never opened either.
That filter catches what the drum lets through: lint, hair, coins, buttons, the corner of a tissue. It fills gradually and silently. Drain times stretch a few seconds a month, cycles run longer, and then one day the machine throws OE with a full drum. Nothing failed. The passage closed, and the pump had been working harder against it for a year.
Top-load LG machines are a different story. Most have no owner-accessible filter, so debris travels straight to the pump. That is why a top loader is more likely to arrive with a humming pump and a jammed impeller, while a front loader typically presents as a slow drain that finally times out. If you have a top loader and the pump hums, the object is already in the pump and no amount of filter cleaning will help — because there is no filter to clean.
One thing worth being clear about: the tub clean cycle does not clean this filter. It runs hot water through the drum to deal with residue on the tub and the door gasket. It has no way of lifting a coin out of a filter housing. A machine that has had a tub clean run every month for years can still have a completely blocked filter.
What You Can Check Safely in Twenty Minutes
If the code was OE, the filter is clean, the hose is clear, the standpipe drains and the pump is still silent when it should run, the fault is in the pump motor, the pressure sensor or the control. Those need a meter to separate, and this is where guessing gets expensive: three parts, three prices, one full drum.
What a Technician Actually Checks
The order matters, because each test rules out a branch of causes instead of replacing parts and hoping.
What LG Washer Drain Repair Costs
These are complete invoices from our own jobs — part, labour and the visit together, not a parts price with extras added later. Ranges show the middle half of jobs, and the count is how many repairs each figure is based on.
| Repair | Typical total | Middle half | Jobs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diagnostic, waived when you approve the repair | $99 | — | — |
| Door latch or door lock | $354 | $296–426 | 86 |
| Water inlet valve | $361 | $326–434 | 90 |
| Suspension | $367 | $334–408 | 177 |
| Drain pump | $370 | $332–428 | 113 |
| Door gasket | $407 | $335–490 | 61 |
| Control board | $436 | $370–534 | 93 |
| Any washer repair, all causes | $365 | $307–427 | 2,770 |
Clearing the filter and pump housing during the visit is not a separate job. What raises the bill is a pump fitted while the object that jammed the last one is still in the housing, or a pump replaced when the real fault was a hose siphoning back from the standpipe.
Why an Unbalanced Load Looks Like a Drain Fault
This one deserves its own section because it is the most common false alarm we attend on LG machines. A modern washer spins fast, and an off-centre load at high speed puts real force through the suspension and the cabinet. Rather than risk that, the control checks the balance before it accelerates, and it refuses to spin a load it cannot even out.
What the owner sees is a machine that has stopped with soaking laundry, sometimes with water still in the drum because the final drain never completed. That looks exactly like a pump problem. It is not: the pump is fine and the machine has simply declined to finish the cycle. The clue is the code, and the second clue is what is in the drum — one bath mat, one duvet, one pair of jeans on their own, or a large towel that has wrapped itself into a rope.
The fix is free. Redistribute the laundry, add a couple of items if the load is very small, and run a Spin Only cycle. Persistent UE with properly loaded washing is a different matter and points at the machine itself: feet that are not level, a floor that flexes, or worn suspension that can no longer damp the drum. Suspension is behind 177 of our completed washer jobs at a typical total of $367, so it is a real failure rather than an excuse — but it is worth proving before paying for it.
Repair or Replace
Drain faults are among the cheapest washer repairs, and the parts involved are not the expensive ones. Replacement only becomes sensible when something structural is also going.
| Situation | Sensible call |
|---|---|
| Any age, UE code with an uneven load | Redistribute the load, nothing is broken |
| Any age, filter packed with debris | Clean it yourself, no call needed |
| Any age, hose kinked or too deep in the standpipe | Fix it yourself, no call needed |
| Under 10 years, OE with a jammed or failed pump | Repair — typically $370 all in |
| Any age, dE with the drum full | Repair the door lock — typically $354, the pump is fine |
| Over 10 years, control board failure | Marginal — the board alone runs to $436 |
| Over 10 years, bearing rumble plus a drain fault | Replace — bearing work rarely pays on an old machine |
| Any age, water on the floor from a split housing | Unplug and book now — a leak damages the room faster than the machine |
Why the Same Fault Comes Back
Repeat drain visits trace to the object that caused the first one. An underwire threads itself into an impeller and does not leave the machine when the pump is replaced — it waits in the housing for the new impeller. That is why the debris matters as much as the part, and why a proper repair ends with the housing and hose checked rather than a new pump simply bolted in.
The second pattern is the filter interval. A filter cleared during a service call fills again, because nothing about the household changed. Every couple of months suits a home that washes most days; quarterly is enough for lighter use; more often with pets or long hair. Machines whose filters are cleaned on a schedule almost never present with OE at all.
The third is detergent, and it hits LG front loaders hard because they use very little water. Overdosing a high-efficiency machine — which most people do, since the caps are generous and cold cycles dissolve less — builds a grey slime through the sump and hose. It narrows the passage over a year or two until drains slow and a cycle finally times out. One hot cycle with no detergent a month keeps it clear and costs nothing, and it prevents more repeat calls than any part on the price list.
How Long a Drain Should Take
A healthy LG empties a full drum in roughly one to two minutes, and the pump note changes audibly as the water clears. Past three minutes there is a restriction even if the cycle finishes normally, and that is the moment to clean the filter rather than wait for OE.
After a repair or a filter clean, run one short empty cycle before loading laundry. It flushes what was loosened, confirms the drain time, and shows up a filter cap that was not seated properly while the floor is still dry. A cap left slightly loose leaks under pressure rather than at rest, so it will pass a visual check and fail during a spin.
Two habits prevent most of this. Check pockets — still how most pumps die — and put anything with wires or hooks in a mesh bag. Beyond that, watch the drain time. A machine that used to empty in a minute and now takes four is telling you the passage is narrowing while the fix is still free.
What To Do Right Now
Note the code. If it is UE, redistribute the load and run a Spin Only — that is the whole fix. If it is dE, the door lock is the suspect and the pump is not. If it is OE, unplug the machine, open the panel at the bottom front, empty the water through the small hose in stages, and take the filter out and wash it. Then check the drain hose is not kinked or pushed more than a hand’s depth into the standpipe, and pour a bucket of water down the pipe. If all of that checks out and the drum is still full, the fault is the pump, the pressure sensor or the board — and a meter separates them for less than replacing all three.
Get the Water Out Today
Same-day and next-day service across Atlanta, Tampa, Jacksonville, Miami and Charlotte. We read the codes and find the blockage as well as the failed part, so a new pump does not jam on the same object. The $99 diagnostic is waived when you approve the repair.
LG Washer Not Draining FAQ
What does OE mean on an LG washer?
A drain fault: the water level did not fall far enough within the time the cycle allows. It confirms the machine reached the drain step and asked the pump to run, but it says nothing about why the water stayed. A packed pump filter, a jammed impeller, a kinked or slimed hose and a blocked standpipe all produce the same OE, so it is where the diagnosis starts rather than a reason to order a pump.
Where is the drain filter on an LG washer?
Behind a small panel at the bottom front of a front-load machine, with a short capped hose beside it. Let the water out through that hose into a shallow tray in stages, then unscrew the filter and rinse it under a tap. Most top-load LG washers have no owner-accessible filter, which is why debris reaches the pump directly on those models.
My LG shows UE and the laundry is soaking. Is the pump broken?
Almost certainly not. UE means the machine detected a load too uneven to spin safely, tried to redistribute it and gave up, so the final spin and drain never completed. Spread the laundry evenly, remove any single heavy item like a bath mat or duvet, and run a Spin Only cycle. Persistent UE with a properly loaded drum points at levelling or worn suspension instead.
How much does it cost to fix an LG washer that will not drain?
Across 2,770 completed washer repairs our median invoice is $365, with the middle half between $307 and $427 — part, labour and the visit included. A drain pump typically totals $370, a door lock $354 and suspension work $367. The $99 diagnostic is waived when you approve the repair, and clearing a blockage during the visit is not charged separately.
How do I open the door with water still inside?
You do not force it — the interlock exists because water above the glass will pour into the room. Drain the machine through the filter hose at the bottom front first, a few litres at a time into a shallow tray. Once the level is below the glass the door releases normally.
Does the tub clean cycle clean the drain filter?
No. Tub clean runs hot water through the drum to deal with residue on the tub and the door gasket, and it cannot lift a coin or a wad of lint out of the filter housing. A machine that has had a tub clean every month for years can still have a completely blocked filter, which is why OE surprises so many owners who thought they were maintaining the machine.
