Appliance Repair Cost: Real Prices from 65,924 Jobs
Most appliance repair pricing published online is the price of the part. That is not what you pay. Across 65,924 completed jobs, the numbers below are full invoice totals: the part, the labor and the service call together. A typical repair lands between 275 and 445 dollars regardless of which appliance it is, because the visit and the labor dominate and the part rarely moves the total much. Medians from completed Bozmanfix work orders where a part was replaced. Diagnostic-only visits are excluded, since including them drags every figure down and understates what a real repair costs. Why the Part Price Is Not the Repair Price
A dryer heating element costs a fraction of a dryer control board. The repairs cost 362 and 478 dollars respectively, a difference of 116 dollars, because the labor and the visit are the bulk of both. Lifespan of the one appliance people forget: how long garbage disposals last.
This is why quotes that list the part alone understate the total by two to three times, and why comparing repair prices by looking up parts online produces a number nobody will honour. It also explains something customers find counterintuitive: clearing a blocked dryer vent, where no part is fitted at all, runs 350 dollars, essentially the same as replacing the heating element. What the Diagnostic Costs and When It Is Waived
The diagnostic visit is 99 dollars. It is waived in full when you approve the repair, so on any job that goes ahead you pay only the repair price.
Two situations cost 150 dollars instead: a stacked washer-dryer set, because the units have to be separated to reach anything, and a double wall oven, because it has to be pulled from the cabinetry.
If we find nothing worth replacing, the 99 dollars is all you pay. That happens on a meaningful share of calls, particularly on dryers where the fault turns out to be a blocked vent, and on ice makers where a raised shutoff arm or a clogged filter is the whole story.
What Makes a Repair Cost More
- Built-in and integrated units. A built-in refrigerator or a wall oven has to be removed from cabinetry before work starts, and that is labor before anything is diagnosed.
- Premium brands. Sub-Zero, Wolf, Viking, Thermador and Miele use model-specific assemblies rather than generic parts, and the parts cost more.
- Stacked laundry. Separating a stacked set adds time to every job on it.
- Sealed system work. Anything involving refrigerant needs recovery and recharge equipment and sits well above the ranges above.
- Discontinued models. Where a part is no longer made, a compatible substitute takes longer to source and sometimes to adapt.
When a Repair Is Not Worth It
We say this before the visit rather than after, because it saves everyone time.
Countertop microwaves. The repair approaches the price of a new unit with a full warranty. Replace it.
A compressor on an older refrigerator. At a median of 956 dollars on a unit past twelve years, replacement usually wins. Under eight years, and especially on a built-in, repair still makes sense.
A cracked outer tub on a washer or a cracked dishwasher tub. The tub is effectively the machine.
A control board on any appliance already past ten years, where the rest of the unit is near the end of its life too.

Every figure on this page comes from completed Bozmanfix work orders, not from an industry survey or a national average.
The base is 65,924 jobs. For each figure we take completed jobs where a part was replaced, and report the median rather than the mean, because a small number of very large sealed-system jobs pulls a mean upward and misrepresents what a typical customer pays. The middle half, shown as a range, is the interquartile range: a quarter of jobs came in below it and a quarter above.
Diagnostic-only visits are excluded from repair medians. Including them would drag every number down by roughly a third and understate what an actual repair costs, which is the opposite of useful when you are trying to budget.
Figures cover our service area across Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, Texas, Pennsylvania and South Carolina, so they reflect Southeast and Sun Belt labor rates rather than a national blend.
Appliance Repair Cost, Frequently Asked
How much does appliance repair cost on average?
A typical repair lands between 275 and 445 dollars including the part, the labor and the service call. By appliance the medians run from 338 dollars for a dishwasher to 427 for an ice maker, with most falling between 338 and 398. The appliance matters less than people expect, because the visit and the labor dominate the total and the part rarely moves it much.
How much does refrigerator repair cost?
Median 395 dollars, with the middle half between 319 and 507. A temperature sensor runs 386 dollars, a defrost heater 395, a fan motor 422, a control board 564. The exception is a compressor at a median of 956 dollars with the middle half between 670 and 1,330, which is roughly two and a half times any other refrigerator repair and the one number that changes the repair-or-replace decision.
How much does washing machine repair cost?
Median 370 dollars, middle half 310 to 445. A drive belt runs 341 dollars, a door lock 351, suspension 367, a drain pump 381, a motor 387, a control board 436. By symptom: noise and shaking 372 dollars, will not spin 362, will not drain 377, leaking 354. All figures include part, labor and service call.
How much does dryer repair cost?
Median 352 dollars, middle half 294 to 437. A drive belt runs 322 dollars, a thermal fuse 332, a thermostat 350, a heating element 362, a control board 478. Worth knowing: clearing a blocked vent runs 350 dollars, within twelve dollars of a new heating element, because no part is fitted and the labor is the cost. The vent is the more common cause of a dryer that will not dry.
Why is the repair so much more than the part costs online?
Because you are paying for a technician to come out, diagnose the fault and do the work, and that cost is close to identical regardless of what the part costs. A dryer heating element and a dryer control board differ enormously in part price and only 116 dollars in repair price. Quotes that list the part alone understate the total by two to three times.
Do I pay the diagnostic fee if I go ahead with the repair?
No. The 99 dollar diagnostic is waived in full when you approve the repair, so you pay only the repair price. It is 150 dollars on a stacked washer-dryer set or a double wall oven, because those have to be separated or pulled from cabinetry to reach anything. If we find nothing worth replacing, the diagnostic is all you pay.
When is an appliance not worth repairing?
Four cases. A countertop microwave, where the repair approaches the price of a new one with a warranty. A compressor on a refrigerator past twelve years, at a median of 956 dollars. A cracked tub on a washer or dishwasher, since the tub is effectively the machine. And a control board on any appliance already past ten years, where other components are near the end of their lives too.
What makes some repairs cost more than the typical range?
Built-in and integrated units, because they have to be removed from cabinetry before work starts. Premium brands like Sub-Zero, Wolf, Viking, Thermador and Miele, which use model-specific assemblies rather than generic parts. Stacked laundry sets, which have to be separated. Sealed system work involving refrigerant, which needs recovery and recharge equipment. And discontinued models, where sourcing a compatible part takes longer.
