Read those four rows together and the picture is consistent. The typical LG repair is only $39 above everyone else, which is nothing. But LG produces roughly four times as many compressor jobs, and compressor work is where the expensive invoices live, so a fifth of LG repairs land above $700 against under a tenth for other brands.
In plain terms: most LG refrigerator repairs are perfectly ordinary, and a minority of them are the most expensive repair a refrigerator can need. The distribution has a long tail rather than a high middle.
Why Compressors Come Up So Often on LG
LG built much of its refrigerator range around a linear compressor, a different design from the reciprocating compressor most manufacturers use. It is genuinely more efficient and quieter, and it has been the subject of sustained failure complaints and class action litigation in the United States.

What belongs on this page is the money. A compressor job on an LG runs a median of $650, against $487 for compressor work on other brands. Two things push it up: the part itself, and the fact that these are sealed system repairs where the refrigerant has to be recovered, the component replaced, the system evacuated and recharged. That is specialist work with specialist equipment, and it is not comparable to swapping a fan.

Five of those six sit between $332 and $446, the same band as any other refrigerator. The outlier is not a symptom at all: it is what sits behind not cooling, which is our single largest LG group at 163 jobs and the one where the answer might be a $425 fan or a $650 compressor.
That is why not cooling on an LG is the one case where we would say the diagnosis genuinely matters before you decide anything. On most refrigerators, and on most brands, it does not.
Telling the Cheap Answer From the Expensive One
Before anyone arrives, two observations narrow it a long way, and they cost nothing.
Listen inside the freezer with the door switch held in. A frost free refrigerator should be audibly moving air. Silence in a running unit points at the evaporator fan, which is a $425 repair, not a compressor.
Look at the rear interior panel of the freezer. Heavy ice behind it means air stopped circulating before the ice formed, which again points away from the sealed system and toward defrost or the fan.
Feel and listen at the back of the unit. A compressor that is running will be warm and will hum. One that clicks every few minutes and falls silent, while the cabinet slowly warms and nothing inside is frosted, is the pattern that points at the sealed system.
None of this is a diagnosis, and we would not ask you to act on it. It is the difference between calling us with a symptom and calling us with useful information, and it changes what the technician brings.
The Ice Maker and Dispenser Side
Ice maker faults are our second largest LG group at 77 jobs and a median of $446, and they are ordinary work rather than anything brand specific. What is worth knowing is how many complaints that arrive as separate problems come from the same place.
A dispenser that has slowed, ice that tastes wrong, a machine producing too little ice and water that comes through in bursts are four different reports and frequently one cause: a restricted water supply, whether that is an old filter, a partially closed shut off valve behind the unit, or a saddle valve that was never fully opened at installation. Before booking a repair on any of those, change the filter and confirm the supply valve is fully open. It is free and it resolves a meaningful share of these calls.
Where it is genuinely the machine, the fill valve and the ice maker assembly are the usual parts, and both sit in the ordinary band. Nothing about an LG ice maker is unusually expensive.
What This Data Does Not Say
It does not say LG refrigerators are bad appliances, and we would not draw that conclusion from service records. Our data describes the machines we are called to, and that follows how many are installed, how old they are and what has been going wrong with a particular component generation.
LG makes refrigerators that people like: they are quiet, efficient and well built in most respects, and the great majority of our LG work is the same ordinary fan, defrost, ice maker and dispenser work we do on every brand. What the numbers do support is narrower and more useful: if you own an LG and it stops cooling, the odds of that being the expensive answer are meaningfully higher than they would be on another brand. That is worth knowing before you decide how to approach it, and it is a statement about one component, not about the appliance.

The case where we would not recommend the repair is an older LG, past a decade, needing a compressor while other components are the same age. There the honest answer is that you would be putting the most expensive repair a refrigerator can have into a machine that will need other work, and we would rather say that than take the job.
What LG Owners Can Do
- Clean the condenser coil once or twice a year. A compressor that cannot reject heat works harder and hotter, and on a brand where compressors are already the risk, this is the one piece of maintenance that matters most.
- Give the unit clearance. Same reason. Airflow at the back and sides is not optional.
- Do not ignore new noise. On LG the most common noise is a fan blade catching ice, and that ice is a warning that arrives before a temperature call does.
