The refrigerator at $479 is the dearest mainstream refrigerator repair in our records — above LG at $445, Samsung at $404 and GE at $398 — and 6.3% of all KitchenAid repairs pass $1,000, against 0.5% on Whirlpool. This is a brand with a genuine tail, and it lives in refrigeration.
The premium is installation, not engineering
KitchenAid, Whirlpool, Maytag and Amana are the same corporation and share platforms and components to a large degree. Line the medians up and the pattern is unmistakable: Amana $325, Maytag $343, Whirlpool $348, KitchenAid $427. Three of those sit within $23 of each other and the fourth is $79 clear.
The dishwasher is the cleanest test of it, because a dishwasher is a dishwasher: drain pump, circulation motor, inlet valve, door latch, control board on every machine ever built. Ours read KitchenAid $372, Whirlpool $321, Bosch $305. The KitchenAid is $51 above the Whirlpool it is related to, and that difference is not a different pump.
It is a machine that is integrated into cabinetry, frequently carrying a custom panel, sometimes with a toe-kick and a filler that have to come off before anything else does.

Refrigeration: where the money is
