KitchenAid is a Whirlpool that has been built into a kitchen, and the bill reflects the kitchen rather than the machine. Across 406 KitchenAid visits by Bozmanfix and 223 completed repairs, the median is $427 — the second dearest of the twelve brands tracked and $84 above Whirlpool, which shares its platforms, its parts bin and its service procedures.

Nothing inside a KitchenAid dishwasher fails differently from the Whirlpool equivalent. What differs is that it is integrated, often panel-ready, usually part of a fitted run, and all of that is time before a technician reaches the fault.

The same logic runs the other way too: KitchenAid owners repair rather than replace, because a built-in is not something you replace on a Saturday.

Three appliances are almost the whole brand

KitchenAid reaches us as kitchen equipment and essentially nothing else: refrigerators 45.1% of visits, dishwashers 24.4%, ovens and ranges 18.0%. Together that is 87.5% of the brand. Laundry barely appears at all, which is the opposite of Maytag inside the same corporation.

The refrigerator at $479 is the dearest mainstream refrigerator repair in our records — above LG at $445, Samsung at $404 and GE at $398 — and 6.3% of all KitchenAid repairs pass $1,000, against 0.5% on Whirlpool. This is a brand with a genuine tail, and it lives in refrigeration.

The premium is installation, not engineering

KitchenAid, Whirlpool, Maytag and Amana are the same corporation and share platforms and components to a large degree. Line the medians up and the pattern is unmistakable: Amana $325, Maytag $343, Whirlpool $348, KitchenAid $427. Three of those sit within $23 of each other and the fourth is $79 clear.

The dishwasher is the cleanest test of it, because a dishwasher is a dishwasher: drain pump, circulation motor, inlet valve, door latch, control board on every machine ever built. Ours read KitchenAid $372, Whirlpool $321, Bosch $305. The KitchenAid is $51 above the Whirlpool it is related to, and that difference is not a different pump.

It is a machine that is integrated into cabinetry, frequently carrying a custom panel, sometimes with a toe-kick and a filler that have to come off before anything else does.

Component-level prices are not broken out for KitchenAid, because our published component figures need at least fifteen repairs per component. At 223 completed repairs the brand is a tenth the size of Whirlpool in our book.

Refrigeration: where the money is

A KitchenAid refrigerator that has stopped cooling is the single most common call on the brand — 70 visits, 17.2% of everything KitchenAid — and where a part was replaced the median came to $525, the highest symptom median anywhere in our brand data.

Two things drive that. The first is that KitchenAid refrigeration skews built-in and counter-depth, so a sealed-system or evaporator job means working in a cabinet opening rather than in the middle of a floor.

The second is that a built-in is measured to its space: replacing it can mean cabinetry work, so owners repair rather than replace and the repairs that get done include the expensive ones.

Ice is the brand’s second refrigeration thread — 34 visits mentioning it, $466 median where a part was replaced, and a separate ice maker category at $444. On integrated units the ice assembly is behind panelling and door hardware, which is again labour rather than parts. What brings us out on a KitchenAid

Shares do not add to 100% because a booking can name several problems and many name none beyond the brand and the appliance. Note the last row: coded visits on KitchenAid resolve at $335, well below the $427 brand median. A code on this brand tends to mean the machine has identified something specific, and specific is cheaper than a hunt.

Why KitchenAid owners repair rather than replace

A KitchenAid is fitted into a kitchen that was designed around it, frequently with a matching suite, and replacing one unit can mean matching a panel, an opening and a finish that may no longer be made.
