Frigidaire Refrigerator Not Cooling: Causes, Checks and Repair Costs

Frigidaire specialists Side-by-side, French door, Gallery Same-day service Atlanta · Tampa · Jacksonville · Miami · Charlotte $99 diagnostic, waived on repair

A Frigidaire refrigerator not cooling has 7 usual causes, and the most common one is a condenser coil packed with dust and pet hair. Frigidaire puts that coil where it can be reached from the front on many models, which makes the cheapest fix in refrigeration also one of the quickest on the visit. Across 4,961 completed refrigerator repairs our median invoice is $390, parts and labour included.

Frigidaire Not Holding Temperature?

We measure both compartments, check the coil and fans, and test the sealed system before quoting parts. Atlanta, Tampa, Jacksonville, Miami, Charlotte.

Match What Your Refrigerator Is Doing

Which compartment is warm is the fastest sorting question there is. One warm and one cold is an airflow problem; both warm together is a heat-rejection problem.

The Coil Is the Cheapest Repair in Refrigeration

A refrigerator does not make cold, it moves heat. The condenser coil is where that heat leaves the cabinet, and it can only do that job if air can pass over it. Cover it in dust, carpet fluff and pet hair and the heat has nowhere to go — so the compressor runs longer, works harder, gets hotter, and both compartments creep upwards together.

On many Frigidaire models that coil is reachable from the front, behind a grille at the bottom, rather than only from the back. That is a genuine advantage: the technician does not have to pull the refrigerator out to do the single most valuable piece of maintenance the appliance has, and a crevice tool and about ten minutes is the whole job.

The mistake that costs you twice: replacing a part on a refrigerator that is warm in both compartments before the coil has been cleaned. If a choked coil is the cause, no part will fix it, so the technician’s first action is to clean it and then give the machine 24 hours to recover, which either solves the problem or narrows the diagnosis considerably.

Two things make this worse in Georgia and Florida than in cooler states. Ambient temperature is one: a coil that copes at 70°F in a kitchen struggles at 95°F in a garage or utility room, and the same layer of dust that was tolerable in spring is not in August. Clearance is the other. A refrigerator pushed tight against a wall or boxed into cabinetry has nowhere to dump the heat it has just collected, and the air it draws in is the warm air it exhausted a minute ago.

One Warm Compartment Means Something Else

If the freezer is still hard-frozen and only the fridge is warm, stop thinking about the compressor and the coil. That pattern is about air movement inside the cabinet, and it has three usual causes.

Frost on the evaporator. Both compartments are cooled by one coil in the freezer, with a fan pushing some of that cold air across to the fridge section. When the defrost circuit fails, frost builds on the coil until the fan cannot move air. The freezer stays cold sitting next to a block of ice; the fridge, which depends on air arriving, warms within hours.

A stalled evaporator fan. Same effect, different cause. No air is being pushed, so nothing reaches the fresh food compartment. The tell is silence: with the freezer door held open on the door switch you should hear that fan running.

A damper or duct problem. The flap that controls how much cold air the fridge receives can stick closed, and a box pressed against the vent does exactly the same thing for free. The technician checks the vents before assuming a part.

Water in the crisper drawers belongs to this same family. It is meltwater from a defrost cycle that could not drain, refreezing at the bottom of the freezer and eventually building towards the fan. Finding water there is early warning of the icing problem rather than a separate fault, and it is much cheaper to act on at that stage.

What the First Half Hour of the Visit Covers

Real numbers come first. A thermometer on a middle fridge shelf and another in the freezer, left a couple of hours. The target is 37°F to 40°F and 0°F. The display is not trusted — a failed sensor will show 38°F while the shelf sits at 50°F, and that gap is itself a diagnosis.
The condenser coil is vacuumed. On many Frigidaire models the bottom front grille comes off and a crevice tool works through the coil and around the fan. On a rear-coil design the unit is pulled out and the same is done at the back. This is the highest-value step of the visit.
Clearance and ambient are checked. A hand’s width behind and above, nothing blocking the front grille, and no oven or direct sun heating the cabinet. In a hot garage, expect a refrigerator to struggle in a way it never does indoors.
The freezer is listened to. With the door switch held or taped, the evaporator fan should be audible. Silence plus a warm fridge is the frost-and-fan pattern.
Frost that should not be there is looked for. On the freezer back wall, on the fridge ceiling, or as a sheet under the bottom drawer. Any of those redirects the diagnosis to the defrost circuit.
The door seals are tested with a sheet of paper. It is closed in the door and pulled. If it slides freely, that part of the gasket is not sealing, and warm humid air leaking in raises temperature and feeds frost at once.
The vents inside are cleared. Nothing pressed against the air outlets in either compartment, and no over-packing of the freezer, which stops circulation as effectively as ice.
The refrigerator is unplugged for five minutes, then plugged back in. After a power cut a board can come back without restarting cooling, and a reset is sometimes the whole fix. Repeated resets are not used to nurse a failing fridge — it hides what is happening.

If the coil is clean, the seals are good, the vents are clear and the temperature is still wrong after 24 hours, the fault is in the fans, the defrost circuit, a sensor or the sealed system. Those need a meter and gauges, and this is where guessing gets expensive — a sensor, a fan, a heater, a board and a compressor are five prices for one warm refrigerator. That is the point where the technician carries on with the meter and gauges.

What a Technician Actually Checks

The order matters, because each test rules out a branch of causes instead of replacing parts and hoping.

Both compartments measured, then compared with what the control reports. A disagreement of more than a few degrees convicts a sensor before anything is dismantled.
Condenser coil and fan inspected first. If heat cannot leave the cabinet, every other reading is distorted, so this is established before anything else is judged.
Compressor discharge temperature and current draw. A compressor running hot against a blocked coil looks very different from one failing to start, and the numbers separate them.
Evaporator panel off, coil inspected. Ice behind that panel is the most informative sight in the machine and sends the whole diagnosis to the defrost circuit.
Defrost heater and sensor against known values. An open heater never melts frost; a drifting sensor means defrost ends too early and frost builds with a perfectly good heater fitted.
Evaporator fan under power, with current draw. A motor that has been grinding on ice often will not restart reliably, and replacing the heater alone leaves the fridge warm a fortnight later.
Damper operation watched. It should open and close on command; an iced pivot or dead motor explains a warm fridge with a cold freezer and no refrigeration fault at all.
Defrost drain traced and cleared. Meltwater with nowhere to go refreezes into a new ice shelf, so clearing it is part of the repair rather than an extra.
Start components tested before the compressor is condemned. A relay or capacitor produces identical symptoms at a fraction of the cost, and no honest diagnosis skips this.
Sealed system pressures only if everything else tests good. A compressor running quietly while nothing gets cold usually means lost refrigerant, and that decision needs numbers.
Control board last. It is the rarest cause and among the dearest parts, so it is ruled in only when everything upstream tests good.

What Frigidaire Cooling Repair Costs

These are complete invoices from our own jobs — part, labour and the visit together, not a parts price with extras added later. Ranges show the middle half of jobs, and the count is how many repairs each figure is based on.

Any refrigerator repair, all causes$390$315–4984,961

The compressor row spans a wide range for a real reason: at the low end it is a start component on an otherwise healthy system, at the high end a full sealed-system job with refrigerant recovery. That is why nobody should quote a compressor over the phone.

Heat, Humidity and What Counts as Normal Here

Refrigerators sold across the United States are rated for indoor use, and in Georgia and Florida plenty of them are not living indoors. A unit in a garage, a carport or an unconditioned utility room spends the summer trying to reject heat into air that is already hotter than the design assumed.

What that looks like from the outside is a refrigerator that runs almost continuously, holds temperature most of the time, and drifts warm on the hottest afternoons. Nothing has failed. The machine is at the limit of what it can do, and the two things that buy back margin are a genuinely clean coil and better clearance around the cabinet. A dusty coil that was survivable in March is what tips it over in July.

Humidity adds its own problem. Every door opening in a humid room brings moisture in, and that moisture ends up as frost on the evaporator. In a coastal Florida summer the defrost circuit has significantly more work to do than the same appliance would face in a dry climate, which is why marginal defrost heaters and drifting sensors surface here first. If your fridge has needed a manual defrost more than once, that is the circuit telling you it is not keeping up.

Repair or Replace

Most Frigidaire cooling faults are airflow or heat-rejection faults, and those parts are cheap relative to the appliance. The decision turns on whether the sealed system is involved.

Why the Same Fault Comes Back

The commonest repeat on Frigidaire cooling calls is the coil, and it is the one with a clear pattern: households with shedding pets refill a coil within a year. The symptom returns exactly as before — both compartments creeping warm — and it looks like the repair failed. Nothing failed. The coil needs cleaning twice a year in those homes, not once, which is worth knowing at the visit.

The second is ice that was melted without fixing the reason. A manual defrost restores cooling for a few weeks and proves the diagnosis, but if the heater is open or the sensor is drifting, frost rebuilds as soon as the compartment is back to temperature. Two months later the fridge is warm again and the owner concludes the visit was wasted.

The third is the defrost drain. A defrost circuit can be restored perfectly while the drain stays blocked, and then every cycle dumps meltwater that refreezes at the bottom of the freezer and works its way back up to the fan. From the outside that is the identical fault returning after a paid repair; in fact the missing step was five minutes with the drain.

How Long Recovery Should Take

After a repair, a coil clean or a manual defrost, give the refrigerator 24 hours with the doors closed before judging it. The freezer reaches 0°F first and the fresh food compartment follows, because the fridge is fed by air that has already crossed the coil. Checking after two hours will always look disappointing.

A healthy unit holds 37°F to 40°F in the fridge and 0°F in the freezer without the compressor running non-stop. If it runs continuously yet still holds temperature, something is making it work harder than designed — a dirty coil, a tired gasket, poor clearance or a hot room. Any of those shortens the life of the compressor, which is the part nobody wants to replace.

Two habits help. The condenser coil should be cleaned twice a year, more often with pets, and once a month it is worth a glance at the freezer back wall for frost that was not there before. Frost appearing where it did not used to gives weeks of warning before the fridge goes warm.

What To Do Right Now

Get real numbers from thermometers in both compartments, move any food that is above 45°F, then book. The technician takes off the bottom front grille and vacuums the condenser coil and fan, checks there is clearance around the cabinet, and listens inside the freezer for the fan. Both compartments warm together usually means heat cannot leave — coil, fan or clearance. A warm fridge with a hard-frozen freezer means frost, fan or damper, and that one needs a meter rather than a vacuum.

Frigidaire Refrigerator Not Cooling FAQ

Why is my Frigidaire refrigerator not cooling?

If both compartments are warming together, the usual cause is a condenser coil packed with dust and pet hair, or a stopped condenser fan — heat cannot leave the cabinet. If only the fridge is warm and the freezer is still cold, the cause is inside: frost on the evaporator, a stalled evaporator fan, or a damper stuck closed. Compressor failure is the least likely of the common answers.

Where is the condenser coil on a Frigidaire?

On many models it is reachable from the front, behind a grille at the bottom of the cabinet, which means it can be vacuumed without pulling the refrigerator out. Other designs put it at the back. Either way, a crevice tool and ten minutes is the whole job on the visit, and it is the most valuable maintenance the appliance has — twice a year, more often with pets.

How much does it cost to fix a Frigidaire that is not cooling?

Across 4,961 completed refrigerator repairs our median invoice is $390, with the middle half between $315 and $498 — part, labour and the visit included. A condenser fan typically totals $383, a defrost heater $385 and an evaporator fan $426. Compressor work spans $354 to $1,200 depending on whether the sealed system has to be opened. The $99 diagnostic is waived when you approve the repair.

My refrigerator is in the garage and struggles in summer. What is going on?

Most refrigerators are rated for indoor use, and in a Georgia or Florida garage the coil is trying to reject heat into air hotter than the design assumed. It will run almost continuously and may drift warm on the hottest afternoons. A genuinely clean coil and better clearance around the cabinet buy back most of that margin, and the technician checks both.

What temperature should it hold?

37°F to 40°F in the fridge and 0°F in the freezer. Measure with a thermometer rather than trusting the display, because a failed sensor can show 38°F while the shelf sits at 50°F. A reading of 45°F or above is a genuine fault; 42°F right after a big grocery load is normal recovery and needs 24 hours.

Why is there water in my crisper drawers?

The defrost drain is blocked, so meltwater backs up and refreezes at the bottom of the freezer instead of draining away. It is the same icing problem as a warm fridge, caught earlier and much cheaper to deal with at this stage. The technician clears the drain, and if the water returns the defrost circuit needs testing before the ice reaches the fan.
