A washing machine goes out of balance for three reasons, and they are worth checking in this order: the machine is not level, the load is distributed unevenly, or the suspension components that damp drum movement have worn out. The first two cost nothing and resolve most complaints. The third is a real repair, and the way to tell them apart is what the machine does with a load you have deliberately balanced by hand.

Washer Shaking, Walking or Banging on Spin?

If it still slams around with a properly distributed load on a level floor, the shock absorbers, suspension rods or drum bearing have worn. We identify which one before quoting, because those are three very different repairs.

A washer on final spin is doing something genuinely violent. The drum turns at 800 to 1,200 rpm with anywhere from ten to twenty-five pounds of wet laundry inside, and the whole point of the suspension system is to keep that mass rotating around its true center. When the load sits to one side, or the machine cannot damp the resulting wobble, you get the banging, walking and shuddering that brings people to this page.

Modern machines also fight back. Most have an imbalance sensor that detects excessive drum movement and responds by slowing down, refilling to redistribute, or aborting the spin entirely. That is why an out-of-balance washer often presents as clothes that come out soaking wet rather than as noise — the machine gave up on spinning rather than shake itself apart. Start With Level, Because It Is Free

A washer needs all four feet in firm contact with the floor and the cabinet sitting level in both directions. Off by a small amount and the drum’s natural wobble is no longer being resisted evenly, so it amplifies instead of settling. This is the cause in a surprising number of cases, particularly after a machine has been moved, after new flooring, or in a laundry closet with a slightly sloped drain pan.

  • Put a level on top of the machine, front to back and side to side. A phone level app is accurate enough for this. Note which corner sits high.
  • Adjust the front feet by screwing them in or out. They thread up and down by hand or with a wrench. Most machines have adjustable front feet and self-levelling rear feet — tip the machine forward slightly and set it back down to let the rear feet settle.
  • Check for rock, not just level. Push down on each corner in turn. Any corner that moves means that foot is not carrying weight, and a machine standing on three feet will always walk.
  • Tighten the lock nuts. Each foot has a nut that locks it against the cabinet. If those are loose, your careful levelling lasts about two loads.
  • Confirm the shipping bolts are gone on a front-loader. On a newly installed machine, transit bolts left in place cause dramatic vibration. They are on the back panel and must be removed before first use.
  • Re-test with a real load. Level, then run a full spin cycle and watch. This is the only proof that matters.

Loads That Guarantee Imbalance

Some laundry is simply hostile to a washer’s balance system, and knowing which items cause it saves you from thinking the appliance is faulty. The pattern is always the same: a single heavy item that absorbs a lot of water and does not spread out.

  • One bath mat alone → rubber backing, holds water, never spreads
  • A single comforter or duvet → traps air, then floods to one side
  • Two or three pairs of jeans only → heavy, stiff, clump together
  • One towel with light items → towel takes all the water
  • Anything in a mesh bag → the bag keeps it as one mass
  • Underfilled front-loader → too little mass to self-distribute
  • Overloaded to the top → cannot tumble, cannot redistribute
  • Sneakers or work boots → dense, will not stay put

Front-loaders and top-loaders fail differently here, which is worth understanding because the advice for one is wrong for the other. A top-loader with an agitator needs items placed evenly around the agitator post, and it tolerates a full load better than a nearly empty one. A front-loader relies on tumbling to distribute the load, so it actually struggles more with too little laundry than with a reasonably full drum — a single comforter in a front-loader is the worst case there is.


When It Is Wear, Not Loading

If the machine shakes violently with a load you have deliberately balanced by hand, on a floor you have confirmed level, the damping components have worn out. Which component depends on the machine type, and they behave differently enough to tell apart.

Shock absorbers and suspension springs. These dampen drum movement during spin. When they fail, the drum swings too freely and triggers the imbalance safety shutoff, or slams into the cabinet on the way up to speed. Front-loaders use shock absorbers at the base of the tub; top-loaders typically use four suspension rods with damping cups suspending the tub from the corners. Replacement is more involved than a switch because the drum assembly needs partial disassembly.

The drum bearing. A bearing failure announces itself by sound rather than by movement — a rumbling or grinding that gets louder as the drum accelerates, and continues after the spin ends while the drum coasts down. Spin the empty drum by hand: a healthy one turns smoothly and quietly, a failing bearing grinds or feels rough. This is the repair where age matters, because on an eight-year-old machine the labour involved starts to rival the value of the appliance.

The spider arm, on front-loaders. The three-armed aluminium casting that connects the inner drum to the drive shaft corrodes over time, especially with cold washes and heavy detergent use. A cracked spider produces exactly the same violent imbalance as bad shocks, but it is a drum assembly replacement rather than a part swap, and on most machines that is the point where replacement becomes the honest recommendation.

A rumble or grind that rises with drum speed and continues as it coasts down points to the bearing. Your Floor Is Half the Problem

This is the part that gets missed, and in our service area it explains why identical machines behave completely differently in two houses a mile apart. A washer transmits vibration into whatever it stands on, and the floor either absorbs that energy or resonates with it.

Newer construction across Florida sits on concrete slab with tile over it. Slab does not flex, so vibration does not amplify — but tile transmits sound hard, so a machine that is only slightly out of balance sounds alarming even when nothing is wrong. Older homes in Jacksonville, Atlanta and parts of Charlotte are frequently pier-and-beam with wooden subfloors, and those genuinely flex. A wooden floor with joists at the wrong spacing can resonate with the spin frequency and produce a shudder through the whole house from a machine that is within spec.

Second-floor and closet laundry installations, common in townhomes throughout Charlotte and Atlanta, combine both problems: a flexing floor and walls close enough that the cabinet can contact them. If your machine bangs against the wall of a laundry closet, the shaking may be normal and the clearance is the actual issue.

🧱 Worth trying on a wooden or upstairs floor: anti-vibration pads under each foot cost under twenty dollars and genuinely help by decoupling the machine from a resonating subfloor. A sheet of plywood under the machine spreads load across more joists and often fixes an upstairs shudder outright. Neither is a substitute for levelling, but on a flexing floor they do more than any part replacement will.
