An Unbalanced Load Is Not the Same as a Broken Washer

Worth separating these two, because the word imbalance covers both and they need different answers.

An unbalanced load means the laundry has bunched to one side of the drum. On spin, the drum tries to rotate that lopsided mass at high speed, the machine lurches, and either it thumps its way through the cycle or the control aborts the spin. Nothing is broken. The same machine handles the next load perfectly.

A washer that is out of balance structurally shakes on every load, including a load you have deliberately arranged evenly. That is the machine, not the laundry, and it is where the parts below come in.

The test that separates them takes one cycle. Put in four or five bath towels, spread evenly around the drum, and run a spin. If that runs smoothly, your machine is healthy and your loading habits are the issue. If it still bangs, the problem is in the machine.

Loads That Cause Imbalance Every Time

Some items will unbalance a perfectly healthy washer, and no repair changes that.

  • A single heavy item. One bath mat, one hoodie, one pair of jeans. There is nothing on the other side of the drum to counterweight it.
  • Bedding and comforters. They soak up water, migrate to one side, and form a dense wet mass that no suspension can balance.
  • Mixed weights. Towels together with shirts. The towels hold the water, the shirts do not, and the drum ends up loaded on one side.
  • Waterproof or rubber-backed items. Mats and shower curtains trap water in pockets rather than draining evenly.
  • An overloaded drum. Packed tight, the laundry cannot redistribute itself during the balance routine at the start of the spin.
  • An underloaded drum. Two items have nothing to balance against, which is why a nearly empty washer can shake harder than a full one.
Free fix that works. Pause the cycle, open the door, redistribute the laundry evenly around the drum, and restart the spin. If you are washing a comforter, add two towels to give it something to balance against.

How to Balance a Washing Machine

Levelling is the first thing to check and the most frequently skipped, because a floor that looks flat rarely is. A washer sitting on even one slightly short foot will rock, and the rocking amplifies with every spin.

  1. Empty the drum and put a spirit level on top of the machine, first front to back, then side to side.
  2. Grip the top corners and try to rock it diagonally, then the other diagonal. Any movement at all means it is not sitting on all four feet.
  3. Adjust the feet by screwing them in or out until the machine sits solid on all four and the bubble is centred both ways.
  4. Tighten the lock nut on each foot up against the cabinet. This step gets missed constantly, and without it the feet vibrate loose within weeks and the problem returns.
  5. Rock it again to confirm. Then run a spin with a normal load.

Most machines have adjustable front feet and self-levelling rear feet. On those, tilt the machine forward a few inches and set it back down to let the rear feet find their position, then level the front.

How to Balance a Front Load Washer

Front loaders are less forgiving of a poor floor than top loaders because they spin faster, often over 1,200 rpm, and generate far more force from the same imbalance. Level them the same way, but expect the tolerance to be tighter. A front loader that rocks even slightly will announce it on every high-speed spin.

Front loaders also carry shipping bolts. These are steel rods through the back panel that lock the drum during transport, and they must come out at installation. A machine that shook violently from the very first load usually still has them in. Running with them in place damages the suspension quickly.

How to Balance a Top Load Washer

Top loaders spin slower and tolerate a marginal floor better, but they have their own failure. The suspension rods, four of them, run from the top corners of the cabinet down to the tub and damp its movement. They wear gradually, and when they do the tub swings further on every spin until it strikes the cabinet.

You can check them with the lid open and the machine off. Push down firmly on one side of the tub and let go. A healthy suspension settles within a bounce or two. A tub that keeps oscillating, or that sits visibly lower on one side, has worn rods.

The Washer Shakes on Every Load

When the machine is level, the feet are locked and an evenly loaded drum of towels still bangs, the fault is mechanical wear. This is where a service call is warranted, because the parts are inside the cabinet.

On a front loader it is usually shock absorbers. On a top loader it is usually suspension rods. Either way, suspension work runs a median of 367 dollars across 195 completed jobs, and it is the single most common repair behind this complaint.

Worn suspension does not fail suddenly. It degrades over a year or more, which is why customers describe it as the machine gradually getting louder rather than breaking. That gradual pattern is itself diagnostic.

The Washer Walks Across the Floor

A machine that physically travels during spin has one of two things going on: the feet are not locked, or the floor is moving.

Wooden subfloors on joists flex under a spinning washer, particularly on an upper storey or over a crawl space. The machine is level, the feet are tight, and it still walks, because the floor itself is deflecting under load. Anti-vibration pads under the feet help, and a sheet of plywood spreading the load across more joists helps more.

Tile and vinyl create a different problem. They are rigid but slick, and rubber feet slide on them. Anti-walk pads solve that directly.

Order matters here. Level and lock the feet first, then address the floor, then consider parts. Fitting new shock absorbers under a machine that is rocking on a short foot fixes nothing, and it is a 367 dollar way to find that out.

The Washer Stops Mid-Cycle and Will Not Spin

Modern washers detect imbalance and refuse to spin rather than damage themselves. The machine fills, tries to spin, senses the load is lopsided, drains and retries, sometimes several times, then gives up and ends the cycle with wet laundry inside.

That is the control working correctly. If it happens only on bedding, redistribute the load. If it happens on every load including a balanced one, the machine has lost the ability to spin at all, which brings in the drain pump, the door lock, the drive belt or the motor. Grinding or Metal-on-Metal Noise During Spin

This is different from banging and it is more serious. Banging is the tub striking something. Grinding, rumbling or a sound that rises with drum speed points to the tub bearing.

Bearing replacement is the one repair on a washer where the arithmetic can favour replacement, because reaching the bearing means splitting the outer tub and is labor-heavy. Against that, it is rare. Across our completed work the bearing came up on 11 jobs at a median of 380 dollars, compared with 195 suspension jobs. So a shaking washer is far more likely to be suspension than bearings, and a technician should confirm which before you approve anything.

!Do not keep running a washer that is striking the cabinet. Each impact loads the suspension mounts, the tub and eventually the bearing. A 367 dollar suspension job becomes a bearing job if the machine is run hard for months in that condition, and a leaking outer tub can put water into the floor.

It Started Right After Delivery or Moving

A washer that shook from day one is almost never faulty. Front loaders ship with transit bolts through the rear panel, and they must be removed before the first wash. Any machine that has been moved needs relevelling in its new position, because no two floors are the same.

What You Can Check Yourself in Ten Minutes

  • Rock test. Grip the top corners and push diagonally. Any movement means it is not on all four feet.
  • Spirit level on the lid, front to back and side to side.
  • Lock nuts. Each foot has one. It must be tight up against the cabinet.
  • Transit bolts on a front loader that is new or newly moved. Look at the back panel.
  • The towel test. Four or five towels spread evenly, spin cycle. Smooth means the machine is fine.
  • Tub bounce on a top loader. Push down on one side and release. It should settle within a bounce or two.
  • Floor. Stand next to the machine during spin and feel whether the floor itself is moving.

If the machine is level, the feet are locked, and a balanced load of towels still bangs, the suspension is worn and it needs a technician.
