Why a Washer Will Not Drain

Water leaves a washing machine through one route: the drum empties into a pump, the pump pushes it through a hose, and the hose sends it to the standpipe or the sink trap. Anything that stops that sequence leaves you with a drum full of water and a cycle that will not finish. The pump has failed. Either it no longer runs, or it runs without moving water because the impeller inside has broken. This is the most common single cause.

Something is blocking the pump. Coins, hairpins, buttons and the corner of a child sock all get past the filter and lodge in the impeller housing. The pump is fine, it simply cannot turn.

The filter or the hose is packed. Lint, detergent residue and grit build up over years. The machine drains slowly, then not at all.

The control or the pressure switch is misreading. Less common, and it presents differently: the machine never attempts to drain rather than trying and failing.

Notice what is not on that list. Drum bearings, the motor, the belt and the door lock are the expensive parts of a washing machine, and none of them cause this symptom. That is why the repair comes in so consistently around $381 rather than swinging by hundreds of dollars the way a refrigerator fault does.

The interesting number there is the third one. A drain repair at $381 costs $11 more than the typical washing machine repair of any kind. In other words, this fault is not one of the expensive ones. People often assume standing water means something catastrophic, and the data says the opposite.

All three of those sit within $26 of each other, which tells you something useful: on this fault the diagnosis does not change the bill much. Whether the pump is replaced or a jammed impeller is freed, the visit and the hour of labor dominate the total.

Do not run the cycle again to see if it clears. A pump straining against a blockage overheats, and an overheated pump that would have been freed in ten minutes becomes a pump that has to be replaced. If the drum is full, stop the machine and leave it.

Not Draining and Not Spinning Are the Same Fault

This is the single most common misunderstanding we hear on the phone. A washing machine is designed not to spin while there is water in the drum, because spinning a full tub is violent enough to damage the suspension and walk the machine across the floor. So when the drain fails, the machine refuses to spin, and the clothes come out soaked.

Owners then describe two faults, assume the motor or the belt has gone, and expect a large bill. In nearly every case fixing the drain restores the spin without anyone touching the motor. If you are weighing up whether the machine is worth keeping, that distinction is worth several hundred dollars.

Draining Slowly Is the Same Problem, Earlier

A machine that drains but takes far longer than it used to is on the same path. The route is partly restricted or the pump is weakening, and it typically becomes a complete failure within weeks. The repair at that stage is the same repair at the same price, with one difference: you choose when it happens rather than discovering it with a full drum of water and a load of wet laundry.

The same applies to a machine that drains normally most of the time and occasionally does not. Intermittent is not a milder version of the fault, it is the early version.

Front Load and Top Load Fail Differently

The symptom is identical, the machine underneath is not, and it changes both where the blockage sits and how long the job takes.

On a front loader the pump and its filter live behind a small access panel at the bottom front of the cabinet, usually with a short drain spout beside it. That design is why coins and hairpins reach the impeller so often: the filter is the last line of defence and it is directly in the path. It is also the reason front loaders develop a smell when this fault is ignored, because water sitting in the pump housing goes stagnant.

On a top loader the pump is usually further inside the machine, often reached by tipping the cabinet or removing a rear panel, and there is frequently no user accessible filter at all. Objects that get past the tub reach the pump directly. The repair is the same in principle and takes a little longer in practice, which is part of why the range on this page has any width to it.

There is one design difference worth knowing if you own an older top loader: some use a pump driven by the main motor through a coupler rather than its own electric pump. On those, a drain failure can genuinely be a motor or coupler problem rather than a pump, and that is the one version of this fault that lands at the top of the range instead of the middle.

What Actually Kills Drain Pumps

Pumps are wear components and they do eventually fail on their own, but most of the ones we replace were finished off by something avoidable. Knowing what shortens their life is worth more than knowing what a replacement costs.

  • Pockets. Coins, keys and hairpins are the classic impeller killers, and they do their damage over months rather than instantly, chipping the impeller blades a little at a time until the pump moves water poorly and then not at all.
  • Underwear wire. Bra wires are the single most destructive item that goes into a washing machine. They are thin enough to pass the filter, stiff enough to jam the impeller, and sharp enough to score the housing. A mesh bag costs a few dollars.
  • Too much detergent. Excess detergent does not rinse away, it builds as a residue in the hose and the pump housing and narrows the path. Machines that drain slowly for years without a mechanical fault are usually telling you about the dosing.
  • Cold washes only. Washing exclusively at low temperature leaves fats and residue that hot cycles would clear. An occasional hot wash keeps the drain path open, and it is the reason a machine used one way for years develops this fault while an identical one does not.

None of that means the fault is your fault. Pumps have a service life, and after a decade of several loads a week they have moved an extraordinary amount of water. It does mean that when the pump is replaced, spending a minute on the filter every few months makes the new one last as long as it should.

What Happens on the Visit

The technician drains the machine first, because nothing else can be done around a full tub. Then the filter and pump housing come out and get inspected: if an object is jammed in the impeller it is removed and the pump is tested to see whether it survived. If the pump is dead it is replaced. The drain hose and the standpipe get checked at the same time, because a blockage further down the line produces an identical symptom and replacing the pump would not have fixed it.

Before leaving, the machine runs a drain and spin cycle so both of you can see water actually leaving. That last step matters more than it sounds, because a partially cleared line will drain on an empty test and fail on a full load.
