Dryer Not Drying? Causes, Costs and What to Check First
A dryer that runs a full cycle and leaves the clothes damp is a different fault from a dryer that produces no heat at all, and the difference decides what it costs. Across 226 visits logged for damp clothes after a full cycle, the median repair was 365 dollars. Clearing a blocked vent runs a median of 350 dollars, which is almost exactly what a new heating element costs, and the vent is the cause far more often. Vent service: dryer vent repair. Match Your Symptom to the Likely Cause
- Drum is hot, clothes are still damp points to airflow. The heat is being made and not carried away with the moisture.
- Everything takes two or three cycles is the same fault caught earlier, usually a vent that has been closing down for months.
- Dryer stops early and says the load is dry points to the moisture sensor rather than heat or airflow.
- Drum is barely warm points to a partial heat failure, a weak element or a thermostat cutting out early.
- No heat at all is a separate diagnosis covered on our dryer not heating page.
- Only towels and jeans stay damp is normal behaviour pushed over the edge by marginal airflow.
- Dryer runs hot enough to smell is an airflow restriction serious enough to be a fire risk, and it needs attention now.
The Dryer Gets Hot but Clothes Stay Damp
This is the most common version of the complaint and the one people most often misdiagnose. If the drum is hot, the heating element is working. Heat is not the problem. What is missing is airflow.
A dryer does not dry clothes by heating them. It dries them by moving heated air through the load, picking up moisture and carrying that moist air out of the house through the vent. Block the exhaust and the machine still makes heat, still tumbles, and simply recirculates air that is already saturated. The clothes come out hot and damp, which is the exact signature customers describe.
Across our completed work, clearing a blocked vent ran a median of 350 dollars on 43 jobs, and blower wheel replacement 368 dollars on 22 jobs. Notice that the vent clearing costs essentially the same as the heating element at 362 dollars, because the labor and the visit dominate the price rather than the part.
Everything Takes Two or Three Cycles
Gradual decline is the same story as above, caught earlier. Vents do not block overnight. Lint accumulates over months, the duct narrows, drying time creeps up, and people adapt by running a second cycle without ever registering the change as a fault.
Long, flexible ducts with sharp bends collect lint fastest, and a dryer pushed hard back against the wall can crush the duct behind it into a fraction of its diameter. If your drying time has doubled over a year rather than failing suddenly, the duct is where to look first.
The Dryer Takes Forever to Dry
Where drying time has stretched but the clothes eventually do dry, the restriction is partial. This is the most recoverable version of the fault and often resolves entirely with duct cleaning and no part at all.
Two other things lengthen cycles without any failure. Overloading the drum leaves no room for air to move through the load, so a full basket takes disproportionately longer than two half baskets. And a washer that no longer spins properly sends clothes to the dryer far wetter than they should be, which shows up as a dryer problem. If your washer sounds different than it used to, mention it when you book, because the washer may be the real cause.
The Dryer Shuts Off Early and the Clothes Are Wet
A cycle that ends after twenty minutes with a damp load points at the moisture sensor, not at heat or airflow. Auto-dry cycles work by measuring conductivity across two metal strips inside the drum. Wet clothes conduct, dry clothes do not, and the machine ends the cycle when conductivity drops.
Fabric softener and dryer sheet residue coat those strips over time and insulate them. The sensor then reads a wet load as dry within minutes and shuts down. Cleaning the strips with rubbing alcohol is part of the check.
Where the sensor itself has failed, replacement runs a median of 384 dollars. A useful test in the meantime is to run the load on a timed cycle rather than auto-dry. If timed drying works normally, the heat and airflow are fine and the sensor is your fault.
The Drum Is Warm but Not Hot
Partial heat is different from no heat and different from an airflow problem. On an electric dryer the heating element has two coils, and one can fail while the other keeps working, producing roughly half the expected heat and a cycle that never finishes.
A thermostat cutting out too early produces the same result. It heats, reaches a threshold that is set too low or is being misread, shuts the element off, and the drum coasts cool for the rest of the cycle. Thermostat replacement runs a median of 350 dollars across 144 jobs, heating element replacement 362 dollars across 360 jobs.
Worth knowing: a restricted vent causes the high-limit thermostat to trip repeatedly, and a thermostat that keeps tripping eventually fails. That is why we check airflow before replacing a part. Replacing the thermostat without clearing the duct buys a few months.
The Dryer Is Not Drying and Not Heating At All
If there is no heat whatsoever, the diagnosis moves to the heating circuit rather than airflow. That covers the heating element, the thermal fuse, the thermostats and, on gas models, the igniter and gas valve coils. We logged 969 visits for no heat, with a median repair of 368 dollars, and it is covered in detail on our dryer not heating page.
One overlap is worth naming here. A blocked vent is the most common reason a thermal fuse blows in the first place. Heat backs up, the fuse does its job and cuts power to the element, and the dryer tumbles cold. Fitting a new fuse without clearing the duct means fitting another one soon after. Thermal fuse replacement runs a median of 332 dollars across 84 jobs.
Only Heavy Items Stay Damp
Towels, jeans and bedding hold far more water than shirts, and they are the first things to expose marginal airflow. If light loads dry normally and heavy loads come out damp, you are not looking at a broken machine so much as a machine operating with less airflow than it was designed for.
The fix is the same as for the main fault, and it is worth doing before the situation degrades to where nothing dries properly.
The Vent Is the Cause More Often Than the Part
This is the single most useful thing on this page. Customers call expecting a broken component and a parts bill. On damp-clothes visits the fix is often the duct rather than a component, and the machine returns to normal once the duct is clear.
The economics are worth stating plainly. Clearing a vent runs a median of 350 dollars, a heating element 362 dollars, a thermostat 350 dollars. They cost nearly the same because the visit and the labor dominate. So the question is not which is cheaper. The question is which one actually fixes it, and a new part on a blocked duct fixes nothing for long.
Gas and Electric Models
Airflow behaves identically on both. What differs is the heat source. An electric dryer heats with a resistive element, and one failed coil gives partial heat. A gas dryer heats by igniting a burner, and it tends to either light or not, which makes partial heat less common on gas and points more firmly at airflow when the drum is warm rather than hot.
Stackable and Combo Units
Stacked washer-dryer sets and all-in-one combo units run the same diagnosis with tighter access. The ducting is usually shorter but more sharply bent, and combo units that condense moisture rather than venting it have a separate set of drainage and condenser faults that look like poor drying.
Access is why the diagnostic on a stacked set is 150 dollars rather than 99. The unit has to come apart to reach anything.
Quick Checks to Mention When You Book
- Lint screen. Clean it every load. If water beads and sits on the mesh rather than running through, wash the screen with soap, since softener residue blocks it invisibly.
- Airflow at the outside vent. Five minutes into a cycle you should feel a strong warm stream. Weak flow is your answer.
- Vent hood flap. It should swing open with the dryer running and not be jammed with lint or a bird nest.
- Duct behind the dryer. Pull the unit out and check the flexible duct is not crushed, kinked or disconnected.
- Moisture sensor strips. Two metal bars inside the drum. Wipe with rubbing alcohol to remove softener film.
- Run a timed cycle. If timed dry works and auto dry does not, the sensor is the fault, not the heat.
- Load size. Try a half load. If it dries normally, airflow is marginal rather than absent.
If airflow at the vent is strong and a timed cycle still leaves clothes damp, the fault is in the element, a thermostat or the blower, and it needs a technician with a meter.

Repair or Replace
Almost always repair. Every fault on this page sits between 321 and 478 dollars, well under the cost of a new dryer, and the most common cause is a duct rather than a component. Dryers are also mechanically simple compared with a refrigerator, so age matters less than it does elsewhere.
The exception is a control board on an older machine, at 478 dollars, where the rest of the unit is also near the end of its life. Our guide on how long dryers last covers where that line falls.
Dryer Not Drying, Frequently Asked
Why is my dryer getting hot but not drying clothes?
Because heat is not what dries clothes, airflow is. The dryer heats air, moves it through the load to pick up moisture, and pushes that moist air out through the vent. When the vent is blocked, the machine still makes heat and simply recirculates saturated air, so clothes come out hot and damp. Check the airflow at the outside vent five minutes into a cycle. Clearing a blocked vent runs a median of 350 dollars across 43 jobs.
Why does my dryer take so long to dry?
Gradual decline is nearly always a duct that has been narrowing with lint over months rather than a part that failed. Long flexible ducts with sharp bends collect lint fastest, and a dryer pushed hard against the wall can crush the duct behind it. Two other causes lengthen cycles without any fault: overloading the drum leaves no room for air to pass, and a washer that no longer spins properly sends clothes over far wetter than they should be.
Why does my dryer stop early with the clothes still wet?
That points at the moisture sensor rather than heat or airflow. Auto-dry cycles measure conductivity across two metal strips in the drum, and fabric softener residue coats them over time so a wet load reads as dry within minutes. The strips get cleaned with rubbing alcohol first. If a timed cycle dries normally while auto dry does not, the sensor is confirmed. Sensor replacement runs a median of 384 dollars.
How much does it cost to fix a dryer that is not drying?
Across 226 visits for damp clothes after a full cycle the median repair was 365 dollars. Clearing a blocked vent runs 350 dollars, a thermostat 350, a heating element 362, a blower wheel 368, a moisture sensor 384. All figures include the part, the labor and the service call. Diagnostic is 99 dollars, waived if you approve the repair, and 150 dollars on stacked units.
Is it the heating element or the vent?
If the drum is hot and the clothes are damp, it is the vent, because the element is clearly making heat. If the drum is only warm, it can be a partially failed element or a thermostat cutting out early. The two repairs cost within twelve dollars of each other, so price does not decide it. Airflow at the outside vent does, and the technician checks that first.
Can a blocked dryer vent cause a fire?
Yes. Restricted airflow lets heat build inside the cabinet with lint packed around it, which is why dryer vents are a recognised residential fire cause. If the outside of the dryer is hot to the touch, the room smells of hot lint, or clothes come out too hot to handle, stop using it and have the vent cleared before running another load. A blocked vent is also the most common reason a thermal fuse blows.
How often should a dryer vent be cleaned?
Once a year for a typical household, and more often for a long duct run, a household doing daily laundry, or a home with pets. The signs to watch for between cleanings are drying times creeping up, the outside vent flap not opening fully, and the dryer cabinet running warmer than it used to.
My dryer is not drying and not heating at all, is that the same problem?
No. No heat whatsoever moves the diagnosis to the heating circuit, meaning the element, the thermal fuse, the thermostats, or on gas models the igniter and valve coils. We logged 969 visits for no heat at a median repair of 368 dollars. The two faults overlap in one place: a blocked vent is the most common reason a thermal fuse blows, so a no-heat dryer often still has a duct problem underneath it.
Why is my dryer not drying?
If you are asking why is my dryer not drying while the drum still turns and the clothes come out warm, the answer is almost always airflow rather than heat. The dryer is making heat and cannot get the moisture out, so the load stays damp through cycle after cycle. A blocked vent run is the most common cause we find, and clearing it costs about what a heating element costs, with the difference that a blocked vent is also what kills elements.
Why is my Samsung dryer not drying?
A Samsung dryer not drying usually points at the moisture sensor bars inside the drum, the vent, or the heating element in that order. Samsung sensor bars read wet laundry as dry when they are coated with softener residue, so the machine ends the cycle early and the load comes out damp. Tell us at booking if you use fabric softener.
Why is my dryer taking too long to dry?
A dryer taking too long to dry is the same fault as one that will not dry, caught earlier. Airflow has dropped, so each cycle removes less moisture and the machine compensates by running longer. Measure it by feel at the outside vent hood: a healthy dryer pushes a strong stream of warm air. Weak flow means the run is restricted, and that is a repair worth making because a restricted run is also a fire risk.
My clothes dryer will not dry at all, what is it?
When a clothes dryer will not dry anything and the drum is barely warm, the heat circuit has failed rather than the airflow. On an electric dryer that is the heating element, a thermal fuse or a thermostat. On a gas dryer it is the igniter or the flame sensor. Our median dryer repair including parts, labor and the visit is $349.
