Most Motor Symptoms Are Not the Motor
A washing machine that will not spin, hums without turning, or stops mid cycle looks like a motor failure from the laundry room. From inside the cabinet it usually is not. The lid switch or door lock. A machine that does not believe the door is shut will not turn the drum. Silence, no spin, no error on older models.
The drain system. A washer will not spin with water in the tub by design. A drain fault therefore presents as a spin fault, and this is the single most common confusion we see.
The belt or the coupler. On belt driven and direct drive machines respectively, a worn connector means the motor runs perfectly while the drum does nothing.
The motor control board. The board drives the motor. When it fails the motor is fine and unpowered, and the two are not distinguishable without testing.
That is why our data shows drain faults as the most common thing found on jobs that started as motor complaints: 24 of them at a median of $373, against 15 genuine no spin repairs at $360. The diagnosis is the valuable part of this visit, not the part.

Those three numbers sit within $27 of each other, and that is the practical takeaway. Whatever the machine is doing, a repair in this family lands close to the same place, because the labor to open a washer and reach the drive system does not change with the diagnosis.

Forty nine dollars separates the top of that list from the bottom. Direct drive machines, which includes most LG and many Samsung units, put the motor and the control electronics closer together, so a fault in one is more often quoted with the other. That is the whole brand effect here.
Front Load and Top Load Motors Are Different Jobs
The part is called the same thing and the work is not comparable.
On a top loader the motor sits under the tub and is reached from below or by laying the machine over. On older belt driven designs it is one of the more accessible components in the appliance, which keeps this repair at the lower end of our range.
On a front loader the motor is mounted at the rear of an outer tub carrying the full weight of the drum. Reaching it can mean removing the front panel, the door boot and sometimes the counterweights, and on some designs the tub has to come out. Same part, considerably more labor, and that is most of what separates the bottom of our range from the top.
It also changes the replace calculation. A front load motor on a ten year old machine that has already had a bearing quoted is the point at which most people stop, and reasonably so.
What the Price Includes
Every figure here is one number covering the visit, the diagnosis, the part and the labor to fit it, plus a 90 day parts and labor warranty on the work. There is no separate diagnosis charge once you approve the repair and no hourly rate running while a technician hunts for the fault.
The warranty is worth more on this repair than on most. A motor or a board fitted into a machine whose underlying problem was never found will fail again, and thirty days, which is the industry standard, is short enough for that to happen just outside cover.
How to Read a Range Instead of a Number
We publish the middle half of jobs rather than a single figure because a single figure would be misleading on a fault with this many possible causes. A quarter of these repairs come in under $320 and a quarter go above $446, and both groups are legitimate.
Where you land is decided by which component failed, not by who you call. A quote at the top of the range is worth asking about, not because it is suspicious, but because it usually means two parts rather than one, and knowing which two changes whether the repair is worth making at all on an older machine.
What the Noise Tells You
Sound is the most useful diagnostic a homeowner has, because each fault in the drive system makes its own noise and they are easy to tell apart once described.
A steady hum with no movement. The motor has power and cannot turn the drum. Belt, coupler, or something jammed against the drum.
A grinding or rumbling that rises with spin speed. Bearings rather than the motor. This is the expensive end of washer repair and the one place where replacement often wins.
A rhythmic knocking during agitation. Usually the drive block or a worn coupler rather than the motor itself.
A high pitched whine that was never there before. Often the motor bearings starting to go, and the one noise that genuinely points at the motor.
Complete silence with the display lit. Not a motor problem at all. The machine has decided not to start, which points at the lid switch, the door lock or the board.
Describing the noise on the phone changes what the technician brings on the van, which is often the difference between one visit and two.
Direct Drive and Belt Driven Fail Differently
Two designs share the same symptoms and want different repairs.
A belt driven washer has a motor bolted to the frame turning the drum through a belt. When the belt goes, the motor runs and the drum sits still, and you can often hear the difference: a healthy hum with no movement. Belts are consumables and the cheapest end of this page.
A direct drive washer has the rotor mounted straight onto the drum shaft. There is no belt to fail, which is the selling point, but it means the motor, the rotor position sensor and the control board form one system. A fault in the sensor makes a perfectly good motor behave like a dead one, and those two possibilities are several hundred dollars apart.
What the Visit Involves
The technician starts at the end of the chain rather than the beginning, because the cheap causes sit closest to the symptom. The lid switch or door lock gets tested first, then the drum is checked for water, then the belt or coupler, and only then the motor and its control board.
That order matters financially. Testing takes minutes and rules out several hundred dollars of parts. Replacing a motor because the drum will not turn, without checking whether the machine simply refuses to spin over standing water, is how people end up paying for a working component.
Once the motor is confirmed, the drum comes forward or the machine gets laid over depending on the design, and the old unit comes out with its wiring and sensor. Before leaving, a full cycle runs so both of you see it fill, agitate, drain and spin rather than taking the bench test on trust.
When a Motor Is Genuinely Worth Replacing
A washer motor is not a wear item in the way a belt or a pump is. Motors usually fail because something else made them work harder: a seized bearing, a drum full of water on every cycle, or a board sending the wrong current. Replacing the motor without finding that reason means doing it twice.
On a machine under about eight years old, a motor repair at our median of $374 is comfortably worth making against the cost of a replacement washer. Where the arithmetic turns is a direct drive motor plus control board on an older machine, which is the $1,000 end of our range and starts to approach a new appliance. We say so on site rather than quoting it and leaving.
