Whirlpool Washer Making Noise
A noisy Whirlpool washer is the most predictable repair we do. Across our completed jobs the middle half of them land between $339 and $419 โ a spread of eighty dollars. Compare that with a refrigerator, where the same symptom can mean a $350 relay or a $1,200 sealed system, and the practical conclusion follows by itself: with this machine there is very little to gamble on.
Noise is also the most common thing Whirlpool washer owners call us about โ 17.7% of every Whirlpool washer job, more than any other brand we service.
Whirlpool Washer Making Noise?
Banging on spin, grinding through the cycle, thumping that walks the machine across the floor โ we identify which of the four usual causes it is, and the price barely moves between them.
How Often Whirlpool Washers Get Noisy
Out of 1,077 completed Whirlpool washer repairs, 192 were about noise. Set against the other brands we service most:
| Brand | Noise calls | Share of that brand’s washer calls |
|---|---|---|
| Whirlpool | 191 of 1,077 | 17.7% |
| Maytag | 118 of 739 | 16.0% |
| Samsung | 154 of 1,096 | 14.1% |
| GE | 70 of 729 | 9.6% |
| LG | 26 of 330 | 7.9% |
Share of service calls for each brand, not a durability ranking. It reflects what owners call us about and how many machines of each brand are in the homes we serve.
The pattern across the top three is worth noticing: Whirlpool and Maytag share much of their engineering, and both sit well above the direct-drive machines from LG. That is a design difference, not a quality verdict โ a belt-and-suspension machine has more moving parts that can announce themselves, and it is also the machine a technician can usually fix in one visit for a predictable price.
Suspension: the Cause Behind Most of It
A washer tub hangs on springs and rides on dampers that absorb the imbalance of a spinning load. Those dampers wear out. They do not fail suddenly โ they lose their ability to absorb, so the tub starts to move further with each spin until it strikes the cabinet.
That is the banging owners describe as “like it is going to come through the floor”. It is worst on the spin cycle, it is worse with a heavy load such as towels or a single duvet, and it gets steadily worse over months rather than appearing overnight. In our completed jobs, suspension work runs $365 at the median.
The reason it matters to act early is mechanical rather than financial. A tub that swings freely puts load on the bearing behind it, and a bearing job is the one repair on this machine that genuinely competes with replacement. Dampers are cheap, the bearing is not, and the dampers are what protect it.
๐ What Each Sound Usually Means
Banging and Thumping on Spin suspension
The most common complaint by a wide margin. Worn dampers let the tub swing until it hits the cabinet, and the machine may walk across the floor. Check the load first โ a single heavy item balls up on one side and produces the same symptom in a perfectly healthy machine โ then check the bounce test above.
Grinding or Rumbling That Follows the Drum
A low rumble that rises and falls with drum speed, present in wash as well as spin, points at the bearing rather than the suspension. This is the expensive branch and the one where the age of the machine genuinely enters the conversation, because reaching the bearing means splitting the tub.
๐ช Rattling or Clanking on Spin Only
Often a coin, an underwire or a button that has worked its way past the tub and now rides between the inner and outer drums. It sounds alarming and is usually the cheapest thing on this list to resolve. If the noise appeared suddenly rather than gradually, start here.
Squealing or Screeching
A belt that has stretched or glazed will squeal under load, loudest at the start of spin when it takes up torque. On a machine that also struggles to reach full spin speed, the belt is the first thing to look at rather than the motor.
Buzzing With No Drum Movement
The machine hums but the drum does not turn. That is not really a noise fault โ it is a drive or control fault announcing itself, and it usually arrives alongside a cycle that will not complete. Covered in more depth on our Whirlpool washer not spinning page.
Gurgling or Sucking During Drain
Normally harmless and often plumbing rather than the machine: the standpipe is sealing against the drain hose and creating a siphon. If it comes with slow draining, the pump or the hose is partly blocked, which is a different repair โ see Whirlpool washer not draining.
๐ Noise is the cheapest warning you will get. Dampers protect the bearing, and the bearing is the repair worth avoiding. Call before 1 PM on weekdays for same-day service in most of our area.
What It Costs
Full invoices below โ part, labour and the service call together, from completed jobs.
| Repair | Jobs | Typical invoice |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnostic visit, applied to repair | โ | $99 |
| Suspension, shocks and dampers | 13 | $365 |
| Any Whirlpool washer noise repair | 65 | $372 |
| Washer repair of any kind, all brands | 4,763 | $370 |
Median completed invoice. Causes with fewer than five completed jobs are not published with a price, which is why belts, pumps and foreign objects appear above without one.
The useful number here is the spread rather than the median: $339 to $419 covers the middle half of these jobs. Whatever the technician finds, the bill lands in roughly the same place, because on this machine the labour of getting to the part dominates the price of the part itself. It also means a quote given before diagnosis is not hiding much โ unlike a refrigerator, where the same symptom spans a thousand dollars.
What to Tell Us When You Book
Each of these takes a minute, and the answers tell the technician where to start.
- Run a spin cycle empty โ if it is quiet, the problem is load balance, not the machine
- Do the bounce test: push the tub down and count the rebounds
- Check the machine is level and all four feet are on the floor
- Look for a coin or underwire in the pump filter behind the bottom panel
- Note whether the noise happens in wash, in spin, or in both
- Note whether it appeared suddenly or crept up over months
Those last two points do more for the diagnosis than anything else you can tell us. Sudden means an object or a belt; gradual means suspension or bearing; spin-only means the tub is moving, wash-and-spin means something is turning that should not be.
Why the Load Matters More Than People Expect
Before any part is blamed, it is worth understanding what the machine is actually fighting. A washer tub filled with water and fabric can carry a serious imbalance: wet laundry is heavy, and when it gathers on one side the tub tries to rotate around a centre that is no longer the middle.
The suspension exists to absorb that. Within its design range it does so invisibly, and you never hear anything. Push past that range and the tub reaches the cabinet โ which is why the same machine can be silent with a mixed load and violent with a single duvet, and why the first thing worth changing is not a part but a habit.
Three loads cause most of the complaints we are called out to. A single heavy item, usually a duvet, a mattress protector or one bath sheet, which cannot distribute itself. A load of towels, which absorb enormous amounts of water and then migrate to one side during the ramp to spin. And a nearly empty drum with two or three heavy items, where there is nothing to balance against.
None of this means the machine is faulty. It means a healthy suspension is being asked to do more than it was designed for, and if the dampers are already tired, that combination is what finally produces the bang.
Where the Machine Stands Also Matters
Two installation faults produce noise that no part will fix. The first is a floor that flexes โ a suspended timber floor in an older house transmits and amplifies what a concrete slab would absorb, and the same machine can be noticeably louder upstairs than it was in the garage.
The second is levelling. All four feet must carry weight; if one is short, the machine rocks on a diagonal and every spin cycle taps it against the floor. Check it with the machine empty by pressing each corner in turn. A machine that moves under hand pressure will move a great deal more with twenty pounds of wet towels turning inside it.
Mention both on the call. The technician checks the floor and the levelling first, because no part will quiet noise that comes from the installation.
When Noise Means Stop Using It
Most noisy washers are safe to keep running for a few weeks while a visit is arranged. Two cases are not.
The first is a machine that walks far enough to strain the fill hoses. A hose pulled off under mains pressure empties into the room at full flow, and that damage dwarfs the repair. If the machine is moving across the floor, stop using it and shut the taps.
The second is a grinding that has become continuous rather than load-dependent. A bearing that is breaking up sheds metal into the tub seal, and what starts as an expensive repair becomes a machine that leaks as well. If the sound is metallic and constant, running another load costs more than it saves.
For the sounds other appliances make, we keep a comparison of them on appliance noise: what each sound means.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Whirlpool washer making a loud banging noise?
Most often worn suspension dampers. They lose their ability to absorb the imbalance of a spinning load, so the tub swings further each cycle until it strikes the cabinet. Check the load first, since a single heavy item produces the same sound in a healthy machine, then push the tub down and see whether it settles in one movement or bounces.
How much does it cost to fix a noisy Whirlpool washer?
The typical completed repair is $372, and the middle half of jobs fall between $339 and $419, including the part, the labour and the service call. Suspension work specifically runs $365. The narrow spread is characteristic of this machine โ the labour of reaching the part costs more than the part.
Do Whirlpool washers get noisy more than other brands?
In our service calls, yes: 17.7% of Whirlpool washer jobs are about noise, against 16.0% for Maytag, 14.1% for Samsung, 9.6% for GE and 7.9% for LG. That measures what owners call us about rather than durability โ belt-and-suspension machines have more moving parts that make themselves heard than direct-drive designs do.
Can I keep using a washer that bangs on spin?
Usually for a few weeks, with two exceptions. If the machine walks far enough to strain the fill hoses, stop and shut the taps โ a hose pulled off under pressure does far more damage than the repair. And if the grinding has become constant rather than load-dependent, a bearing may be breaking up, which eventually adds a leak to the problem.
Is the noise a sign the washer is finished?
Rarely. Suspension, belts and foreign objects are all routine repairs at around $372, and a machine that gets them is good for years more. The one cause that genuinely raises the replacement question is a failed tub bearing, because reaching it means splitting the tub โ and worn dampers are exactly what wears the bearing out, so fixing the cheap fault is what prevents the expensive one.
It started suddenly rather than gradually. Does that change anything?
It changes where we look first. Noise that appears overnight is usually something that has arrived โ a coin, an underwire or a button riding between the drums โ or a belt that has slipped. Noise that built up over months is wear: dampers first, bearing later. Tell us which it was when you book and it shortens the visit.
