The Two Drums, and What Each One Does

The inner drum is the only part that spins: slowly to wash, then fast — often 1,000+ RPM — to fling water out of the fabric through those holes during the spin cycle.
The outer drum (tub) — the part that holds water
Surrounding the inner drum is a sealed, watertight outer tub. It doesn’t move. Its job is to hold the wash water and contain it while the inner drum spins inside. The outer tub is also where the drum bearing and seal live — the components that let the inner drum spin smoothly, and the ones responsible for the loudest drum failures.
How the Drum Spins
The inner drum is turned by the motor, connected in one of two ways depending on the machine:
- Belt drive
A rubber belt links the motor to the drum. Common on many top-loaders and older machines. When the drum stops turning but the motor hums, a worn or snapped belt is a frequent cause — and it is the cheapest repair on this page. - Direct drive

Telling a Normal Drum Sound From a Failing Bearing
This is the distinction worth learning, because it decides whether you are watching a machine wear out or listening to a load that was packed badly.
A healthy drum makes noise. Water sloshing, the pump whirring for a minute or two at the end, a rising whine as the spin ramps up, the occasional thump when a wet towel lands on one side — all normal, and all of it stops when the cycle stops. The tell for a failing bearing is different in three specific ways: it appears only under the fast spin, it gets louder every week rather than varying load to load, and it sounds like metal on metal — a grinding or a low roar rather than a knock. If you can spin the empty drum by hand with the machine unplugged and feel grit or hear scraping, that is the bearing too.
A knock that happens once per revolution, on a front-loader, is a different signature and usually points at the spider arm rather than the bearing. Either way, the useful move is the same: get it looked at while it is still a noise. A bearing that has been roaring for months can score the shaft, which turns a bearing job into a drum-and-shaft job.

A worn drum bearing starts as a faint rumble on the spin cycle and grows into a loud grinding roar. Because reaching it means largely dismantling the machine, it is the most labor-intensive job on this page. Top-Load vs Front-Load Drums
The mechanical difference between the two designs is the orientation of the drum and what moves the clothes inside it. That difference is also why each style fails differently, which is the part that matters once you own one.
Top-load drum (vertical)
The drum sits upright and spins on a vertical axis. Clothes are moved by a central agitator (a tall finned spindle) or a low-profile impeller. Water fills the tub and clothes are submerged. Because the drum’s weight sits on a vertical shaft rather than hanging off one end, bearing wear is less of a theme here — the recurring complaints are suspension and balance instead.
Front-load drum (horizontal)
The drum lies on its side and spins on a horizontal axis. Instead of an agitator, raised paddles lift the clothes and drop them through a smaller amount of water — more efficient, but a horizontal drum is cantilevered, so its full weight plus a wet load bears on the rear bearing and the spider arm. That is the mechanical reason bearing and spider failures are a front-load story rather than a top-load one, and why the door boot seal exists at all.

Can a Washing Machine Drum Be Replaced?
Yes — the inner drum, the bearing, and the spider arm can all be replaced. The question is whether it’s worth it. These are among the most labor-intensive washer repairs because the machine has to be largely taken apart to reach them.
The general rule is the 50% rule: if the repair costs more than about half of a comparable new machine, and the washer is more than halfway through its 10 to 13 year lifespan, replacement usually makes more sense. Put real numbers on it and most of the decisions are easy.
