A dryer with a restricted exhaust behaves exactly like a dryer with a failing heating element: clothes come out damp, cycles run long, the drum feels hot. Clearing a vent and replacing a heating element cost within four dollars of each other. That is the whole argument. A restricted vent traps heat inside the cabinet, the element runs hotter and cycles longer than it was designed to, and it fails early. 🔥 The Safety Part, Stated Plainly
Signs that the exhaust is restricted right now:
- Clothes need two cycles. The single most reliable indicator. A load that used to dry in 45 minutes and now takes 90 is telling you the moist air has nowhere to go.
- The outside of the dryer is hot to touch. Heat that should be leaving through the duct is staying in the cabinet.
- The laundry room gets humid during a cycle. Moisture escaping into the room instead of outdoors means the duct is blocked or disconnected.
- No visible airflow at the outdoor vent hood. Put your hand at the exterior flap while the dryer runs. Weak or absent air is definitive.
- A burning smell. Stop the dryer. This is lint heating against a hot surface, and it is the point at which the risk stops being theoretical.
The last one is not a wait-and-see item. If you smell burning, unplug the machine and have the exhaust looked at before running it again.

🔧 What the Job Actually Involves
Vent work splits into three kinds, and which one you need depends on what the technician finds behind the machine.
Cleaning the run — the majority
Of our 126 vent jobs, 77 were cleaning. The dryer is pulled out, the duct disconnected at the machine, and the run cleared from both ends with a rotating brush fed through it. What comes out is compacted lint, and on longer runs it comes out in a solid plug rather than loose fluff.
The length and shape of the run decides the effort. A dryer against an exterior wall with a two-foot duct is a short job. A dryer in an interior laundry closet venting up through the roof is a different one, and that difference is what produces the spread between $299 and $451.

Replacing the hose or duct — 11 of the jobs
Flexible foil and plastic transition hoses crush behind the machine and tear at the clamps. A crushed hose restricts airflow permanently, and no amount of cleaning fixes it. The replacement is rigid or semi-rigid metal, which cannot be crushed the same way.
This is also where we find installations that were never right: a hose run twice the necessary length and coiled behind the dryer, or a duct that was never connected to the exterior hood at all and has been venting into a wall cavity.
Clearing a blockage — 8 of the jobs
Distinct from routine cleaning. Birds nest in exterior vent hoods when the flap sticks open, and that is the usual find. A nest blocks the exhaust completely, which produces the sudden version of the symptom: a dryer that worked fine last week and now does not dry at all.
🏠 Where the Vent Run Is Decides the Price
The $299 to $451 spread on this page is almost entirely about geometry. Two identical dryers with identical lint produce different invoices because of where the exhaust has to go.
- Exterior wall, short run. The dryer backs onto an outside wall and the duct is two or three feet. Bottom of the range. Access is immediate and the whole run is reachable from both ends.
- Interior laundry room, run through the floor or ceiling. Common in newer builds where the laundry sits in the middle of the house. The duct travels ten to twenty feet with two or three bends before it reaches an exterior wall, and each bend is a place lint packs against.
- Second-floor laundry venting through the roof. The hardest and the priciest. The run is long and vertical, gravity works against the airflow, and the exterior termination is on the roof rather than at ground level.
- Stacked or closet-installed units. The machine has to come out of a tight enclosure before anything can be disconnected, and go back in aligned. That is labor before the vent work even starts.
None of this is guesswork on the technician’s part — the run is visible once the dryer is pulled out, which is why the quote comes after looking rather than over the phone.
The installations we find that were never right
A share of vent calls turn out not to be maintenance at all. What we find instead:
A duct that vents into a wall cavity or crawl space rather than outdoors. The dryer works, the clothes dry, and moist lint-laden air has been going into the structure for years. This one is found by feel: no airflow at any exterior hood while the machine is clearly running.
A transition hose run at three times the necessary length and coiled behind the machine. Someone pushed the dryer back against the wall without shortening the hose, so it kinked into a spiral. Airflow through it is a fraction of what it should be, and no cleaning improves it — the hose gets replaced short and straight.
An exterior flap held permanently open by lint. A flap that cannot close is an invitation, and birds accept it. Eight of our vent jobs were blockages cleared, and nests account for most of them.
In each case the fix is one visit and the machine stops fighting itself. What it will not do is undo an element that already failed from months of restricted airflow — that is a separate part and a separate line on the invoice.
📅 How Often It Needs Doing
Once a year is the working answer for a normal household. Three things move it sooner:
- A long or complicated run. Every elbow adds resistance and a place for lint to catch. A duct with three bends collects faster than a straight one of the same length.
- Volume. A household running two loads a day accumulates lint roughly three times faster than one running four loads a week.
- Pets. Pet hair comes off clothing and bedding in quantity and compacts more tightly than fabric lint.
What does not extend the interval is emptying the lint screen. The screen catches what it catches, and everything past it goes into the duct regardless. A diligently cleaned screen and a blocked duct coexist perfectly well, which is why people are surprised to find a plug of lint in a vent they believed they were maintaining.
