💲 $99 Diagnostic — Applied to Repair

There is one dryer vent problem that is close to specific to North Texas, and almost nobody checks for it: hail damage to the roof termination. Dallas Fort Worth sits inside Hail Alley, the region that absorbs about 70 percent of all hail damage in the United States, and after a storm every homeowner inspects the shingles. Nobody climbs up to look at the dryer vent cap.

Dallas, Plano, Frisco, McKinney, Carrollton, Allen, Irving and Richardson.

We have completed 586 appliance jobs across the Texas side of the DFW metro, 251 of them paid repairs, with a median invoice of $315 and the middle half between $262 and $396 — parts, labor and the service call together.

🧊 The Hail Problem

North Texas averages three to five significant hail events a year. The core season runs March through June with April and May the worst of it, and between 2020 and 2025 Dallas, Collin, Denton and Tarrant counties recorded more than 1,800 storms, roughly half of them hailstorms, together causing over 2.3 billion dollars in property damage.

Roofers will tell you that hail rarely destroys shingles outright — what it reliably damages is the metal on a roof: vents, flashing and gutters. A dryer vent termination is exactly that. A thin metal hood with a hinged flap, or a roof jack with a cap, sitting on the most exposed surface of the house.

What hail does to a dryer vent, specifically

  • A dented hood jams the flap shut. The exhaust has nowhere to go and the dryer stops drying, abruptly, with no warning at all.
  • A dented hood jams the flap open. Less obvious and worse over time. An open flap is an invitation to birds and rodents, and a nest blocks the run completely.
  • A missing or cracked cap leaves the duct open. Rain enters the run, wets the lint inside, and wet lint packs rather than blowing out.
  • A bent roof jack breaks the seal. Now you have a roof leak that follows the duct into the ceiling, and it will be blamed on the roof rather than traced to the vent.

The reason this matters is timing. If your dryer started drying badly in May or June and you live in Collin or Denton County, the hailstorm six weeks earlier is a genuine suspect and the machine is probably fine. That is a cheap thing to check and an expensive thing to guess wrong about.

🔶 Add the vent to your post-storm walk-around. When a roofer is already up there after a hail event, the dryer termination costs nothing to look at and it is not on anybody’s standard checklist. If you cannot get eyes on it, run the dryer and hold a hand at the outside vent — no push of air means the exhaust is blocked, regardless of what caused it.

📍 Dallas, Texas or Dallas, Georgia?

Worth clearing up, because it sends people to the wrong phone number. There are two Dallases in our service area, and we cover both.

Dallas, Texas is this page. Metro DFW, postal codes starting 75, and the number to call is (972) 807-7568.

Dallas, Georgia is a town in Paulding County, northwest of Atlanta, postal codes 30132 and 30157. We have completed 333 jobs there. If that is your Dallas, the right pages are appliance repair in metro Atlanta and dryer vent cleaning in Atlanta, and the Georgia number is on those.

The two are not comparable markets and we do not mix their figures. Every number on this page is from the Texas side.

🔥 What Texas Heat Does to a Dryer

The second condition that shapes this work here is temperature, and the mechanism is simple once it is spelled out.

A dryer heats intake air, tumbles clothes in it, and exhausts it. It does not manufacture heat from nothing — it raises the temperature of whatever air it is given. Give it air at 75 degrees and the heating element has a certain amount of work to do. Give it air from a North Texas garage in August, which can sit well above 100 degrees, and something more subtle happens: the machine reaches its cutoff temperature faster, cycles its thermostat more often, and the internal components spend the cycle nearer their limits.

Garage laundry is extremely common across DFW. On its own it is survivable — plenty of dryers live in garages for a decade. The problem is the pairing. A restricted vent traps heat in the cabinet, and a hot garage removes the margin the machine had for absorbing that. Together they are the combination that ends heating elements early, and an element replacement runs $355 across 145 completed jobs.

That is the practical argument for clearing the duct in spring rather than August. You are not preventing the heat; you are removing the other half of the pair before the heat arrives.

📏 The 35-Foot Rule and the North Suburbs

Residential code allows 35 feet of dryer exhaust from the machine to the outside termination. That is not a straight-line allowance: every 90-degree elbow subtracts 5 feet from it, and every 45-degree bend subtracts 2.5 feet, because a corner costs airflow the same way extra pipe does. Four elbows leave you 15 feet of usable straight run.

Our busiest postal codes on the Texas side are 75035 and 75034 in Frisco, 75072, 75071 and 75070 in McKinney, and 75007 in Carrollton. These are the fastest-growing suburbs in the metro, built overwhelmingly since 2000, and second-floor laundry is the standard plan in that generation of construction.

A second-floor laundry has to get its exhaust up into an attic and out through the roof. Count the turns: out of the machine, into the wall, up, into the attic, across, and out. That is five bends before a foot of horizontal distance is counted, which puts the run near its code limit as designed. It is a fine house. It just has no spare airflow to give away to lint.

And note how the two North Texas conditions converge on the same point. New construction means roof terminations, and roof terminations are what hail hits.

Median full invoice including parts, labor and the service call, from the Bozmanfix Repair Index. The DFW figure covers 251 paid jobs on the Texas side of the metro. The vent line is our company-wide number across 94 completed vent jobs in six states, for the reason set out below.

Being straight about which number is local

The $315 is genuinely local: 251 paid jobs across the Texas metro. The vent figure is company-wide rather than local, and we label it that way on purpose. Texas is a newer market for us than Georgia or Florida, so the vent median here rests on the six-state pool rather than the DFW subset alone. We publish a median only where the count behind it can carry one, and we always print the count.

So here is the honest shape of it. The company-wide vent median is $359 across 94 jobs, middle half $299 to $451. DFW appliance work generally runs slightly below our company average, which argues for the middle of that band, while the long roof-vented runs common in the north suburbs argue for the upper part. When there are enough local vent invoices to stand behind, this page will carry a Dallas figure instead of a national one.

🏘️ What We Find, by Type of DFW Home

North suburban two-storey, 2000 onward

Frisco, McKinney, Allen, Prosper, north Plano. Second-floor laundry, exhaust through the attic to a roof termination. The longest runs in this market and the ones most exposed to hail.

Two specifics recur. Attic duct gets stepped on during other work, and a crushed section restricts airflow permanently — cleaning does nothing for it, it has to be replaced. And a roof termination is the least-observed part of the house, so a cap loaded with lint or dented by hail sits there for months without anyone noticing.

Established single-storey, nineteen-seventies to nineties

Richardson, Garland, Carrollton, north Dallas proper, Irving. Laundry in a utility room or garage with a short run to an exterior wall. Structurally the easy jobs and the bottom of the price range.

Here we find age rather than geometry: the original flexible foil transition hose still behind the machine, brittle enough to tear when the dryer is pulled out, and an exterior flap that has not sealed properly in years. Both get replaced rather than cleaned.

Garage installations

Common everywhere in this metro and the most demanding environment a DFW dryer works in, for the temperature reason above. If a garage dryer slows down every summer and recovers in autumn, that pattern itself is the diagnosis — the machine is being pushed past its margin by heat, and the margin is what the vent took away.

Apartments, townhomes and closet installations

Uptown, Las Colinas, the newer urban infill. The machine is wedged into an enclosure barely deeper than it is, so the transition hose behind it is crushed into a spiral because there is nowhere for it to sit straight. That hose is restricting airflow on every cycle.

The vent work is routine. Getting the unit out and back in aligned is what takes the time, and that is labor before anything is cleaned.

🔥 Signs You Need It Now

🔴 A burning smell during a cycle is not a wait-and-see item. Unplug the dryer and have the exhaust checked before running it again. Lint is the most flammable material in a laundry room and a restricted duct pushes hot air back into a cabinet lined with it. Roughly a third of home dryer fires are attributed to failure to clean.
  • Loads need two cycles. The most reliable single indicator.
  • The dryer cabinet is hot to the touch. Heat that should be leaving through the duct is staying in the machine.
  • It got worse right after a hailstorm. Specific to this market and worth taking seriously — check the termination before the appliance.
  • Drying slows every summer and recovers in autumn. Heat is exposing a restriction that is present all year.
  • No airflow at the outdoor hood. Hold a hand at the exterior flap mid-cycle. Weak or absent air is definitive.
  • It worked last week and now does not dry at all. Sudden onset means a complete blockage — a nest, or a flap jammed shut.

Emptying the lint screen prevents none of this. The screen catches what it catches and everything past it goes into the duct regardless, which is why a household that empties it every load still finds a compacted plug in the run.

🟢 Two free checks before you call anyone. Run the dryer and hold a hand at the outside vent — no push of air means the run is blocked and the machine is not your problem. Then pull the dryer out a few inches and look at the hose behind it. If it is crushed flat or kinked into a spiral, straightening it may give back most of your airflow for nothing.

🔧 What We Actually Do

Across our vent work, 77 jobs were cleaning the run, 11 replaced a hose or a section of duct, and 8 cleared an outright blockage.

Cleaning. The dryer comes out, the duct is disconnected at the machine, and the run is cleared from both ends with a rotating brush. On a long attic run what comes out is usually a solid plug rather than loose lint.

Hose or duct replacement. Flexible foil and plastic transition hoses crush behind the machine and tear at the clamps, and a crushed hose restricts airflow permanently — cleaning does not fix it, so it gets replaced with rigid or semi-rigid metal that cannot collapse the same way. Crushed attic sections get the same treatment.

Termination and blockage work. Nests, jammed and dented flaps, missing caps, and now and then a duct that was never connected to the outside hood at all and has been venting into a wall cavity or an attic for years. That last one is found by feel: the machine runs and there is no air at any outside termination.

📅 When to Book It

Once a year covers a normal DFW household. Two local windows are worth planning around, and they are close together.

After hail season, so late June or July. The season runs March through June with April and May the peak. Booking once it is over means the termination gets looked at after the damage has happened rather than before, which is the right order.

Before summer, if the dryer is in the garage. That pulls in the other direction, toward April. If you have to choose, choose this one — a restricted vent plus a 100-degree garage is the pairing that costs real money, and a dented cap that jams open will keep for a few weeks.

Three things shorten the interval regardless of season: a long run with several bends, which describes most north-suburban two-storey homes, more than a load a day, and pets. Pet hair compacts more tightly than fabric lint and comes off bedding in quantity.

Dryer Vent Cleaning Dallas — FAQ

How much does dryer vent cleaning cost in Dallas?

Our company-wide median for a dryer vent job is $359 across 94 completed jobs, middle half $299 to $451. We publish a median only where the count behind it can carry one, so the vent line rests on the six-state pool and we label it as such rather than presenting it as local. What is local: the median paid DFW job across all appliance types is $315 over 251 paid jobs, with the middle half between $262 and $396.

Can hail damage a dryer vent?

Yes, and in North Texas it is a genuine and overlooked cause. Hail rarely destroys shingles outright but reliably dents the metal on a roof, and a dryer termination is thin metal with a hinged flap on the most exposed surface of the house. A dented hood can jam the flap shut, which stops drying abruptly, or jam it open, which lets birds in. DFW averages three to five significant hail events a year, and the vent is on nobody’s post-storm checklist.

Do you serve Dallas, Texas or Dallas, Georgia?

Both, with separate teams and separate numbers. This page and the number (972) 807-7568 cover Dallas, Texas and the DFW metro, postal codes starting 75. Dallas, Georgia is a town in Paulding County northwest of Atlanta, postal codes 30132 and 30157, where we have completed 333 jobs — for that one use our metro Atlanta pages and the Georgia number. We keep the two markets and their figures separate.

Why does my dryer only struggle in summer?

Because heat exposes a restriction that is there all year. A dryer raises the temperature of whatever air it is given, and a North Texas garage in August can sit well above 100 degrees, so the machine hits its cutoff faster and cycles its thermostat more often. On its own that is survivable. Combined with a restricted vent trapping heat in the cabinet, it is the pairing that ends heating elements early. A seasonal pattern that recovers in autumn is itself the diagnosis.

How long can a dryer vent be?

Residential code allows 35 feet from the machine to the outside termination, but every bend spends part of that allowance: a 90-degree elbow costs 5 feet and a 45-degree bend costs 2.5 feet. Four elbows leave 15 feet of usable straight pipe. A second-floor laundry in a Frisco or McKinney two-storey typically passes through five bends before counting any horizontal distance, which puts it near the limit as built.

How often should a dryer vent be cleaned in Dallas?

Once a year for a normal household. Late June or July is the natural window locally, once hail season has passed, so the termination gets inspected after the damage rather than before. If the dryer is in a garage, spring is the better choice instead, because clearing the duct before summer removes half of the heat-plus-restriction pairing. Shorten the interval for long runs, more than a load a day, or pets.

Is it the vent or the heating element?

They produce the same symptom, which is why elements get replaced when they did not need to be. A restricted vent traps heat in the cabinet and makes the element run hotter and longer than designed, so it fails early. An element replacement runs $355 across 145 completed jobs, close to what a vent job costs, so checking the vent first is the cheaper order of operations.
