💧 Why Houston Air Makes a Dryer Look Broken

This is the part almost nobody explains, and in this market it matters more than the machine.

A dryer does not create dryness. It moves moisture out of fabric into air, then pushes that air outdoors. How much water a batch of air can pick up depends on how much it is already carrying. Think of dry air as a fresh sponge and humid air as a sponge that is already half full — it will still take on water, just far more slowly.

Houston sits on the Gulf Coast, and morning relative humidity here commonly runs near 90 percent. Your dryer draws its intake air from inside the house or from the garage, and in either case that air started out humid. Now picture a typical second-floor laundry room in a Katy or Cypress subdivision. The duct leaves the back of the machine, turns to get into the wall, travels through a joist bay, turns again to go up, turns to get into the attic, and turns once more to reach the roof or a gable termination. That is four or five elbows before a single foot of horizontal distance is counted.

Master-planned two-storey, roughly 2000 onward

Cypress, Katy, Sugar Land, Pearland, The Woodlands. Second-floor laundry, exhaust up through the attic to a roof or gable termination. These are the longest runs in this market and the ones where the owner most often blames the appliance.

Two specifics come up repeatedly. First, attic ductwork gets stepped on, and a crushed section restricts airflow permanently — cleaning does nothing for it and it has to be replaced. Second, a roof termination is the hardest place in the house to notice a problem, because nobody ever looks at it. A screen or cap loaded with lint is invisible from the ground and shuts the run down completely.

Nineteen-seventies and eighties single-storey

Inside Beltway 8, Spring Branch, Alief, southwest Houston. Laundry is usually in a utility room or garage with a short run to an exterior wall. Structurally these are the easy jobs.

What we find here is age rather than geometry: the original flexible foil transition hose still behind the machine, brittle enough to tear when the dryer is pulled out, and an exterior flap that has not sealed properly in years. Both get replaced rather than cleaned.

Garage installations

Extremely common across Houston and the hardest environment a dryer here has to work in. An uncooled Houston garage in August is both hot and humid, and the dryer draws its intake air straight from that. It starts every cycle at a disadvantage that has nothing to do with the machine.

Put a restricted vent on top of a garage installation and you have the pairing that ends heating elements early. If your dryer lives in the garage and slows down in summer, look at the duct before you look at the appliance.

Apartments, townhomes and closet installations

Inside the Loop especially. The machine is wedged into an enclosure barely deeper than it is, so the transition hose behind it is crushed into a spiral because there is nowhere for it to sit straight. A hose in that shape is restricting airflow every single cycle.

The vent work itself is routine. What adds time is getting the unit out and back in aligned, and that is labor before anything is cleaned. Expect a closet job to take longer than the same job in a garage.

Homes near the bay

Clear Lake, Seabrook, La Porte, Baytown. Salt in the air is hard on exterior metal, and a dryer vent terminates in a metal hood with a moving flap. Corroded flaps stick — sometimes open, which lets pests in, sometimes shut, which blocks the exhaust entirely. On the bay side the termination is worth checking on its own schedule, separately from the duct.


🌀 After a Storm or a Flood

🔴 Do not power on a dryer that has been standing in water. Not to test it, not briefly. Water in the motor, the wiring or the control board turns the first power-up into the event that destroys the machine, and it is an electrical shock risk to whoever plugs it in. Leave it off and have it looked at.

Houston households know the drill on flooding better than we could explain it. Two vent-specific points are worth adding, because they get missed while attention is on the bigger damage.

Wind-driven debris blocks exterior terminations. After a serious storm the vent hood can be packed with leaves and grit, or the cap can be gone entirely, which leaves the duct open to anything that wants to nest in it. Both produce a dryer that suddenly stops drying with no warning at all.

Standing water in a garage or utility room can also reach the bottom of the duct where it leaves the wall. Wet lint inside a duct does not dry out and blow away, it sits, packs and starts to smell. If a dryer that survived the water now runs but the laundry room smells musty during a cycle, the duct is the first thing to check.


🔥 Signs You Need It Now

🔴 A burning smell during a cycle is not a wait-and-see item. Unplug the dryer and have the exhaust checked before running it again. Lint is the most flammable material in a laundry room, and a restricted duct pushes hot air straight back into a cabinet lined with it.
  • Loads need two cycles. The most reliable single indicator anywhere, and the most common call we get in Houston.
  • The dryer cabinet is hot to the touch. Heat that should be leaving through the duct is staying in the machine.
  • The laundry room gets humid while the dryer runs. Moisture is going into your house instead of outdoors — and in this climate the house is the last place you want it.
  • No airflow at the outdoor hood. Hold a hand at the exterior flap mid-cycle. Weak or absent air is definitive.
  • It worked last week and now does not dry at all. Sudden onset means a complete blockage, most often a nest or a storm-packed termination.

Emptying the lint screen prevents none of this. The screen catches what it catches, and everything past it goes into the duct regardless. That is why a household that empties the screen every load is still surprised to find a compacted plug in the run.

🟢 Two free checks before you call anyone. Run the dryer and put your hand at the outside vent — if there is no push of air, the run is blocked and the machine is not your problem. Then pull the dryer out a few inches and look at the hose behind it. If it is crushed flat or kinked into a spiral, straightening it may buy back most of your airflow for nothing.

🔧 What We Actually Do

📅 When to Book It

Once a year is the general rule. In Houston we would treat that as the floor rather than the target, for the reason set out above: humid air deposits more lint on duct walls than dry air does, so the run loads up faster here than the national advice assumes.
