Up through the roof. The route that produces the expensive jobs. A vertical run has to push warm, moisture-laden air with lint suspended in it upward against gravity, which is the hardest thing you can ask of a dryer’s own blower. Lint that does not make it out falls back and accumulates in the low part of the run, so a vertical duct clogs from the bottom.
And when the laundry is in the basement
Which it very often is, because the traditional city house plan put service rooms for cooking and laundry at the lower level. A basement dryer has no ground-floor rear wall to use, so its exhaust must climb before it can leave. That is the longest, most vertical and most clog-prone configuration in this market, and it is also the most common one we meet in the older neighbourhoods.
🧱 The Wet Basement, and Why It Matters Here
Philadelphia basements have a reputation for damp, and it is earned by construction rather than neglect: most pre-war rowhouses have stone or poured concrete foundation walls that were never waterproofed to anything like a modern standard. Moisture moves through them.
Put a dryer in that space and two things follow.

Lint sticks to a wet surface instead of being carried along and blown out. It builds in layers, each holding the next, and the run narrows from the inside where nobody can see it. A disconnected duct makes the basement worse. If a joint in a vertical run works loose — and thermal cycling over decades makes that likely — the dryer is exhausting hot wet air directly into the basement. Every load then adds moisture to a space that already struggles with it. The machine runs, no air reaches the outside, and the damage is to the house rather than to the appliance.

❄️ What Winter Does
Philadelphia is the only market on our list with a real freezing season, and it introduces a failure the southern cities never see.

📏 The 35-Foot Rule and Vertical Runs
Residential code allows 35 feet of dryer exhaust from the machine to the outside termination, and every bend spends part of that allowance: a 90-degree elbow subtracts 5 feet, a 45-degree bend subtracts 2.5 feet. A corner costs airflow the same way extra pipe does.

Emptying the lint screen prevents none of this. The screen catches what it catches and everything past it goes into the duct regardless, which is why a household that empties it every load still finds a compacted plug in the run.
🔧 What We Actually Do

Cleaning. The dryer comes out, the duct is disconnected at the machine, and the run is cleared from both ends with a rotating brush. On a vertical rowhouse run the material tends to be concentrated in the lower portion, because lint that does not make it to the top falls back.
Hose and duct replacement. Flexible foil and plastic transition hoses crush behind the machine and tear at the clamps, and a crushed hose restricts airflow permanently — cleaning does not fix it, so it is replaced with rigid or semi-rigid metal that cannot collapse the same way. Separated joints in a vertical run get properly reconnected and supported, since a joint that has worked loose once will do it again if nothing changes.
Blockage and termination work. Nests, debris in ground-level rear-yard terminations, flaps seized by ice or corrosion, and now and then a duct that was never connected to the outside at all and has been venting into a wall cavity or the basement for years. That one is found by feel: the machine runs and there is no air at any exterior termination.
