A duct-cleaning company cleans ducts. That is the whole product, it is efficient, and if your dryer works properly and you simply want the annual maintenance done, it is a sensible thing to buy.

An appliance repair company — which is what we are — starts from the symptom rather than the pipe. That difference only matters in one situation, and it is a common one: when the dryer is not drying and nobody knows why yet.

Here is why. Restricted airflow, a failing heating element, a tripped thermal fuse and a dying thermostat all produce the same complaint: clothes come out damp after a full cycle. From the outside they are indistinguishable. In our records, vent problems account for about four percent of dryer repairs, which means most of the time that symptom is something else.

📅 How Often a Dryer Vent Needs Cleaning

Once a year for a normal household. That is the interval to plan around and for most homes it is enough.

Four things shorten it, and they compound rather than substitute for each other.

  • A long run with several bends. Every corner is a place lint packs. A second-floor laundry venting through a roof needs attention more often than a garage-wall installation.
  • More than a load a day. Volume is linear — two loads a day puts twice the lint through the duct.
  • Pets. Pet hair compacts more tightly than fabric lint and comes off bedding in quantity. The most underestimated of the four.
  • A humid climate. Damp lint clings to duct walls instead of travelling the run and blowing out the end, so more of it stays inside the pipe.

Any two together and treat once a year as a floor rather than a target. All four and the realistic interval is closer to every six to eight months.

What does not extend the interval is diligence with the lint screen, which is the single most common misunderstanding about this subject.


🧺 The Lint Screen Does Not Do This Job

Emptying the screen every load is good practice and it prevents none of what this page is about.

The screen catches what it catches. Everything past it goes into the duct, load after load, and there is no second filter anywhere downstream. It is a coarse trap at the start of a long pipe, not a seal.

Which is why a household that has emptied the screen religiously for eight years is genuinely surprised when a technician pulls a compacted plug out of the run. Both things are true at once: the screen is spotless, and the duct is blocked. One was never going to prevent the other.

🟢 The check that costs nothing. Start the dryer, walk outside and hold your hand at the exterior vent hood. There should be a clear push of warm air, strong enough to hold the flap open. Weak air, or no air while the machine is clearly running, means the exhaust is not getting out — and in that situation the dryer itself is usually fine, which is worth knowing before you spend anything.

🔥 Signs It Needs Cleaning Now

🔴 A burning smell during a cycle is not a wait-and-see item. Unplug the dryer and have the exhaust checked before running it again. Lint is the most flammable material in a laundry room and a restricted duct pushes hot air back into a cabinet lined with it.
  • Loads need two cycles. The most reliable single indicator. Moist air has nowhere to go, so it stays in the drum.
  • The dryer cabinet is hot to the touch. Heat that should be leaving through the duct is staying in the machine.
  • The laundry room gets humid or warm while the dryer runs. Moisture is escaping into the house instead of outdoors.
  • No airflow at the outdoor hood. Definitive, and free to check.
  • Visible lint around the exterior hood or behind the machine. Material is escaping where it should not be.
  • It worked last week and now does not dry at all. Sudden onset points at a complete blockage rather than gradual accumulation, often a nest.

The gradual version is the one that costs people money, because there is no moment where the dryer breaks. Drying times creep from forty minutes to fifty to eighty across two years, the household adapts without noticing, and eventually somebody decides the machine is old and buys a new one. The new machine is then connected to the same duct.

🔧 What Happens on the Visit

No mystery to it, and worth knowing so you can tell whether the job was done properly.

  1. Airflow is checked at the termination first. This establishes whether there is a restriction at all and roughly how bad it is, before anything is dismantled. It also separates a duct problem from a machine problem, which matters because the symptoms are identical.
  2. The dryer is pulled out and disconnected. The transition hose behind the machine comes off. A large share of all restrictions live right here, because that hose is usually crushed into whatever shape the gap behind the dryer allows.
  3. The run is cleared from both ends. A rotating brush on a flexible rod is fed through and debris is drawn toward the openings rather than pushed deeper. Working from both ends matters: a brush driven only from the machine end can pack material against a bend instead of removing it.
  4. The termination is cleaned and inspected. The exterior hood, its screen if it has one, and the flap. A flap that will not hinge freely is not a cleanable problem and gets replaced.
  5. The duct itself is inspected while it is open. Crushed sections, sagging spans, separated joints, prohibited materials and protruding fasteners are all found by looking, not by brushing — see the two sections below on what any of those mean.
  6. The machine is reconnected and airflow is checked again. Same point, same method. If the reading at the hood has not improved, the work is not finished.

How long it takes

Under an hour on a straightforward ground-floor installation with a short run. Longer where the machine is stacked or wedged into a closet, because getting the unit out and back in aligned is labor before anything is cleaned. Longest on second-floor laundries venting through a roof, where simply reaching both ends of the run is part of the job.

💨 What Airflow Is Supposed to Look Like

The reason a small amount of lint matters more than people expect is that a dryer moves a serious volume of air. A clothes dryer can pull on the order of 200 cubic feet per minute out of the house, and it has to push all of it through a four-inch pipe.

Every restriction in that pipe is resistance the machine’s own blower has to overcome, and it was not built with much margin. This is why the professional way to verify the work is a measured airflow reading at the termination before and after cleaning, taken with a vane anemometer. It is also the standard that the industry’s own credential is built around: the Certified Dryer Exhaust Technician qualification from the Chimney Safety Institute of America is the only nationally recognised certification for this trade, and its exam covers airflow physics, duct material science and the relevant NFPA standards, 54 and 211.

The practical takeaway for a homeowner is simpler than the standards. A number before and after is the only thing that proves a cleaning achieved anything. Clothes seeming to dry a bit better for a fortnight is not evidence, because the same load in drier weather behaves the same way.


📐 What Your Duct Is Supposed to Be Made Of

This is where a lot of houses turn out to be wrong, and it explains why some ducts clog again within months of being cleaned. Residential code is specific about the exhaust duct, and the requirements exist for airflow and fire reasons rather than tidiness.

  • Rigid or semi-rigid metal, smooth on the inside. Galvanised steel or aluminium, at least 0.0157 inches thick, which is 28 gauge. Smooth matters because a ribbed interior catches lint at every ridge.
  • Four inches in diameter. Narrower is a permanent restriction that cleaning cannot undo.
  • Plastic and vinyl flexible duct is prohibited outright. Code bans it, and so do effectively all appliance manufacturers. If a white or silver plastic concertina hose is running from your dryer, that is the first thing to replace and no amount of cleaning substitutes for it.
  • Fasteners must not protrude more than an eighth of an inch inside. A sheet-metal screw poking into the airstream is a snag point, and a plug typically starts at exactly such a spot. Joints are meant to be taped, not screwed through.
  • Supported at intervals no greater than twelve feet. Unsupported duct sags, a sag becomes a low spot, a low spot collects condensate, and condensate holds lint. This is why a sagging run re-clogs so quickly.
  • The flexible piece belongs only at the machine. A listed semi-rigid or flexible metal transition duct, typically no more than eight feet and carrying a UL 2158A listing, is permitted at the dryer connection so the appliance can be pulled out for service. It is not meant to be the whole run and must not be concealed in a wall.

Three of those turn up regularly on visits: vinyl hose still in service behind an older machine, screws through joints where tape should have been used, and unsupported duct sagging between joists. All three are the reason a duct that was cleaned last year is packed again this year — the cleaning was fine, the installation is what keeps refilling it.

🔶 Worth checking yourself in about a minute. Pull the dryer out a few inches and look at the hose behind it. If it is white or silver plastic that crinkles, it should not be there at all. If it is metal but crushed flat or kinked into a spiral, it is restricting every cycle and straightening it may give back most of your airflow for nothing.

📏 Why Some Ducts Have No Margin Left

Code allows 35 feet of dryer exhaust from the machine to the outside termination, and that is not a straight-line allowance. Every 90-degree elbow subtracts 5 feet from it and every 45-degree bend subtracts 2.5 feet, because a corner costs airflow the same way extra pipe does.

A run with four 90-degree elbows therefore has 15 feet of straight pipe left before it is over the limit. Now count the turns on a typical second-floor laundry: out of the machine, into the wall, up, into the attic, across, and out through the roof. Five bends before a single foot of horizontal distance.

Such a house is perfectly code-compliant and has almost no spare airflow. A quarter-inch lining of lint removes a share of the capacity a short garage run would never miss. It is not a defect, it is a thin margin — and a thin margin is exactly the case where annual cleaning stops being optional.


🆚 Cleaning or Repair, and How to Tell

These get used interchangeably and they are different jobs at different prices.

Cleaning is what most of this page covers: the duct is intact and lint has narrowed it, so clearing it restores the airflow the installation was designed to have. It is maintenance, and it comes round again next year.

Repair is when the duct itself is the problem and cleaning cannot fix it. A transition hose crushed flat restricts airflow permanently however clean it is. An attic section stepped on during other work is the same. A joint that has separated means the dryer is exhausting into a wall cavity, a crawl space or a basement instead of outdoors, and that one is worse than any blockage, because every load is putting moisture into the structure of the house.

  • Gradual slowing over months, everything else normal — cleaning.
  • Cleaned recently and already slow again — something is deformed, sagging, or the wrong material, so it is a repair.
  • Machine runs, no air at any exterior vent at all — likely a separated duct rather than a clog.
  • Flap seized, cracked or missing on the outside hood — the termination needs replacing.
  • Stopped drying overnight with no warning — complete blockage, most often a nest.

  • Bends. A rod driven blind through a 90-degree elbow tends to pack material against the corner rather than bring it back, and the run can measure worse afterwards than before.
  • The far end. Most serious blockages sit at or near the termination. On a roof-vented run that end is not reachable from the laundry room at all.
  • Measurement. Without an airflow reading before and after there is no way to know whether anything was achieved.
  • Diagnosis. A crushed section, a separated joint and a lint plug all feel the same from the machine end and need three different responses.
