How to Replace a Dryer Heating Element

Replacing a dryer heating element takes 45 to 90 minutes, the part costs $20 to $60, and the only tools required are a screwdriver, a socket set and a multimeter. Test the element for continuity before you buy anything — a good element reads roughly 10 to 15 ohms, a failed one reads infinite. And before you close the panel back up, deal with the vent, because a restricted vent is what killed the element in the first place.

Before anything else: unplug the dryer. An electric dryer runs on 240 volts through a double-pole breaker, and that is enough to kill you. Pull the plug from the wall — do not rely on switching the breaker off, because you cannot see the breaker from behind the dryer. On a gas dryer, close the gas supply valve as well. If your dryer is hardwired rather than plugged in, switch off both legs at the panel and verify with a meter before touching any terminal.

A dryer heating element is a coil of nichrome wire inside a metal housing. Air is pulled across it, heats up, and passes into the drum. Electrically it is about as simple as an appliance part gets, which is why it is one of the few repairs genuinely worth doing yourself: the part is cheap, the diagnosis is definitive, and there is no calibration or programming afterwards.

The failure mode is equally simple. The coil breaks, usually from repeated thermal cycling, and once broken the circuit is open. The drum still turns, the timer still counts down, the air still moves — nothing heats. That combination of everything working except heat is the signature.


First: Is It Even the Element?

Four other parts produce the same no-heat symptom, and three of them cost less than the element. Checking in the right order saves you from replacing a working part.

  • Half-tripped breaker → motor runs, no heat at all
  • Thermal fuse → one-time safety, blows from overheating
  • Cycling thermostat → heats briefly then quits
  • High-limit thermostat → trips on restricted airflow
  • Heating element → no heat, everything else normal
  • Gas dryer? No element at all → igniter and gas valve instead
🔌 Check the breaker properly, it is free. Electric dryers use a double-pole breaker — two legs of 120V making 240V. One leg can trip while the other stays live, which powers the motor and the controls but leaves you with zero heat. It looks exactly like a dead element. Switch the breaker fully off and back on before you take anything apart, because this is the single most common false alarm we get called out for.

Testing the Element With a Multimeter

This is the step that turns guesswork into certainty, and it takes about two minutes once you have access to the element. Any basic multimeter does it.

  • Set the meter to ohms, the lowest resistance range. If it has a continuity setting with a beeper, that works too but gives you less information.
  • Disconnect both wires from the element terminals. Testing with wires attached reads the whole circuit rather than the element, which produces misleading numbers.
  • Touch one probe to each terminal. A healthy element reads roughly 10 to 15 ohms depending on wattage. A broken one reads infinite, OL, or nothing at all.
  • Check for a short to the housing. Put one probe on a terminal and the other on the metal frame of the element. Any reading at all means the coil is shorting to the case, which is a failed element even if it still heats.
  • Test the thermal fuse while you are in there. It should read near zero ohms. Infinite means it has blown, and it blew for a reason — see the vent section below.
  • Test both thermostats the same way. Near zero ohms at room temperature is correct for both the cycling and high-limit thermostats.
🔎 What the readings tell you: element infinite means replace the element. Element fine but thermal fuse infinite means replace the fuse and clear the vent, because the fuse only blows from overheating. Element fine, fuse fine, but the dryer heats briefly then stops means the cycling thermostat. All four testing good with no heat sends you back to the breaker.

Finding the Element on Your Machine

Access differs by manufacturer, and this is where a job either takes 45 minutes or two frustrating hours. There are two basic layouts.

Rear panel access. Most Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore, Amana and GE dryers put the element in a housing behind the back panel. Pull the dryer forward, remove the screws around the rear panel, and the element housing is visible immediately — usually a rectangular metal box on the left or bottom left. This is the easy layout, and it is genuinely a beginner job.

Front or side access. Many LG, Samsung and Electrolux models require removing the top panel, then the front panel, then lifting out the drum to reach the element. The drum comes out with the belt, and getting the belt back around the idler pulley on reassembly is the part that defeats people. If you have one of these and have never had a dryer apart, this is a reasonable moment to call someone.

📸 Photograph the wiring before disconnecting anything. Element terminals are not always interchangeable, and thermostats sitting on the same housing have similar-looking leads. Two photos from slightly different angles will save you twenty minutes of doubt during reassembly. Also count your screws — rear panels commonly use two different lengths, and forcing a long one into a short hole cracks the housing.


The Replacement

  • Unplug the dryer and pull it well clear of the wall. Give yourself room to work and to lay the panel down flat.
  • Remove the access panel. Rear panel for most Whirlpool-family machines, top and front for most LG and Samsung. Keep screws sorted by location.
  • Photograph the element and its wiring. Two angles. Note which lead goes where and where the thermostats mount.
  • Disconnect the wires. They pull off the terminals, sometimes with a small tab to release. Grip the connector, never the wire itself.
  • Remove the mounting screw and slide the housing out. Usually one or two screws hold the element housing. It slides out along its channel — do not force it sideways.
  • Transfer the coil into the new housing if needed. Some replacement parts are coil-only and reuse your existing housing. Others come complete. Check what you bought before disassembling anything.
  • Move the thermostats to the new housing. If they mount on the element housing and tested good, they transfer across. Position them exactly as they were.
  • Slide the new element in and reconnect. Wires per your photos, connectors pushed on fully until seated.
  • Vacuum the lint out before closing up. There will be a lot inside the cabinet. This is both a fire-safety step and an airflow step, and you will never have easier access.
  • Reassemble, plug in and test on a timed dry. You should feel heat within a minute or two. Let it run a full ten minutes to confirm it holds heat rather than cutting out.

Why It Burned Out, and Why That Matters More Than the Part

Here is the part most replacement guides leave out entirely, and it is the reason people end up doing this job twice. Heating elements rarely die of old age. They die from heat that had nowhere to go.

A dryer is designed around a specific airflow rate. Air comes in, passes the element, absorbs moisture from the clothes, and exits through the vent. Restrict that exit — lint in the duct, a crushed flexible hose behind the machine, a blocked exterior flap, a vent run that is simply too long — and the heat stays inside the cabinet instead of leaving with the air. The element runs hotter than designed on every single cycle. Thermal cycling at elevated temperature is precisely what breaks nichrome wire.

This is why a blown thermal fuse alongside a dead element is not a coincidence. The fuse is a one-time safety device that blows specifically when the cabinet overheats. If both failed together, the machine has been overheating for a while, and putting in a new element without clearing the vent means you will be back here within a year or two.

🔥 A thermal fuse that keeps blowing is a fire warning, not a part to keep buying. It is doing its job — telling you the dryer is running too hot. Replacing it repeatedly without fixing the airflow restriction removes your safety margin on a machine that is already overheating. Clogged dryer vents are a documented cause of house fires, and lint ignites readily.
🌬️ Do this while the panel is still off: disconnect the vent hose and look through it toward the light. If you cannot see clearly through, it needs clearing. Check the exterior flap actually opens when the dryer runs. Replace crushed or kinked foil hose with rigid or semi-rigid duct, and keep the run as short and straight as possible. Long Vent Runs and Southern Humidity

Two things make this worse across Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas than the numbers in a manufacturer manual suggest. The first is house layout: newer construction frequently puts laundry in an interior closet or a second-floor hallway, which means a 25 to 40 foot duct run with several elbows rather than a short straight shot through an exterior wall. Every elbow costs airflow, and lint accumulates at each turn preferentially.

The second is ambient humidity. A dryer works by evaporating water into air and carrying it away, and air that is already carrying a lot of moisture has less capacity to absorb more. On a humid Jacksonville or Miami day, the same load takes longer to dry, which means longer run times, which means more thermal cycles on the element per year than the same dryer would see in a dry climate. Combine long runs with high humidity and element replacement intervals here are genuinely shorter.

The practical takeaway is the vent cleaning interval. Annually is the standard advice. In a household running ten or more loads a week through a long duct run, every eight months is closer to right, and it is the cheapest appliance maintenance there is. How do I know if my dryer heating element is bad?

Test it with a multimeter set to ohms, with both wires disconnected from the terminals. A healthy element reads roughly 10 to 15 ohms. A failed one reads infinite or OL. Also touch one probe to a terminal and one to the metal housing — any reading there means the coil is shorting to the case, which is also a failed element. Visually you can sometimes see a break in the coil, but not always.
