🟢 Codes That Cost Nothing

UE is the code LG owners see most and understand least. It does not mean the machine is broken. It means the drum could not balance the load well enough to reach spin speed safely, so it stopped and asked for help. A single heavy item like a bath mat or one bedsheet wrapped into a rope is the classic cause, and both are fixed by opening the door and shaking the load out.

LE deserves care because LG defines it as the motor being overloaded and locked, and their remedy is to let the machine rest for 30 minutes. That is genuinely the first step. A motor that has thermally protected itself will run again once cool. If LE returns immediately after a rest with a normal load, it has stopped being a load problem. 🔧 Codes That Point at a Part

Code meanings from LG. OE is a median of 15 completed repairs where that code brought us out. Other figures are medians for the part the code points at, across all washer brands: water inlet valve $362 (104 jobs), door lock $390 (14), drive motor $384 (23), control board $439 (112).

OE — Will Not Drain, $412

The most common LG code we are called for, and the one with enough completed repairs behind it to price properly. Across 15 jobs where OE was the reason for the visit, the median invoice was $412.

That is above the washer average of $365, and the reason is what OE covers. LG’s own first checks are the drain hose and the pump filter, and those are free. By the time a technician is standing in front of the machine, the cheap causes have usually been ruled out, and what remains is the drain pump itself.

IE and FE — Water In, $362

IE and FE are opposites and it helps to read them as a pair. IE means not enough water is arriving, FE means too much. LG attributes FE directly to a faulty water valve, and IE to inadequate supply.

With IE, LG’s instruction is to check the tap is fully open before anything else, and that resolves a real share of them. When the supply is confirmed good, the inlet valve is the part, at a median of $362 across 104 completed jobs. Mineral deposits on the valve seat shorten its life, which is why this repair appears earlier in hard-water areas.

dE, dE1 and dE2 — Door Lock, $390

LG defines dE as the washer being unable to lock its door, and lists an incompletely closed door as a cause. On a front loader that is worth testing seriously: a single sock caught in the boot seal will stop the latch engaging, and the machine reports a lock fault rather than an obstruction.

When the latch assembly has genuinely failed, the repair runs a median of $390. It is frequently confused with a control board at $439, because both present as a machine that will not start.

CE — Motor Over-current

The one code on this page that may not be the appliance at all. LG lists four causes for CE: a short circuit, a loose connection, a ground fault or a power surge. Two of those live in the house wiring rather than the washer.

If CE appears after a storm or alongside flickering lights elsewhere in the house, the supply is worth checking before any part is replaced. A washer repaired on a bad circuit throws the same code again.

OE leads by more than double, which fits the machine. The drain path handles everything that came in on the clothes, and it is the only system on a washer that regularly ingests foreign objects.

How to Reset an LG Washer

Before assuming a part has failed, the reset is worth doing, and LG builds it in. Press POWER to turn the machine off, unplug it or switch off its breaker, wait about a minute, restore power and turn it back on. For codes caused by a momentary glitch rather than a failure, this clears them.

What a reset does not do is fix a blocked drain, a failed latch or a dead valve. If the same code returns within a cycle or two, the machine is reporting something real and repeating the reset only delays the diagnosis.

Manufacturers take two approaches to fault codes. One is a numbered list where F21 means nothing until you look it up. The other is an abbreviation of the thing that failed. LG uses the second, and it makes the display genuinely useful.

Read that way, OE and IE stop being cryptic: one is the way out, the other the way in. It also explains why FE and IE feel like opposites, because they are — too much water versus too little, both sensed at the same point.

The One Thing People Get Wrong About LG Codes

A code identifies the symptom the machine can measure, not the component that caused it. OE says water is not leaving the drum. That could be a kinked hose, a blocked filter, a jammed impeller, a failed pump motor or a control board no longer driving the pump. Five outcomes, one code, and a price range from nothing to $439.

This is why a firm quote given over the phone from the code alone is not a quote, it is a guess. It is also why the free checks matter: each one you carry out removes a possibility before anyone charges you for the visit.
