Samsung Washer Error Codes
Samsung error codes split into codes that describe a condition and codes that usually mean a part, and the split is not the one people expect. Across our completed Samsung washer work, 151 jobs involved a code on the display โ the second most common reason these machines are brought to us, behind only leaks.
The useful question is not what a code stands for. Manuals answer that. It is which codes turn into a repair and which ones describe a condition the machine is reacting to โ and that we can answer from our own service records.
Samsung Washer Showing a Code?
Write it down before you clear it. The code is the single most useful thing you can tell us when you book.
๐ข Codes That Describe a Condition
These three describe conditions rather than failures. Tell us the code at booking and what the machine was doing when it stopped.
UB, UE or U6 load is unbalanced
The machine has tried to redistribute the load, failed, and stopped rather than spinning out of balance. This is the machine protecting itself. Spreading the load by hand and restarting the spin is the safe first step โ a single duvet or a tangled sheet is the usual culprit. If it recurs with every load including small mixed ones, the suspension needs a technician.
4C or 4E water not arriving
The most frequently recorded code in our Samsung washer jobs. It means the machine asked for water and did not get enough within the time it allows. The technician starts with the supply: both taps fully open, the inlet hoses free of kinks behind the machine, and the small mesh filters where the hoses meet the machine, which block with scale and grit. If those are clear, the inlet valve is next.
5C, 5E or SC water not leaving
The drain side of the same idea. Most often the pump filter behind the bottom access panel is clogged with lint, coins and hair. The technician clears it, checks the drain hose is not kinked or pushed too far down the standpipe, and then tests the pump itself.
๐ง Codes That Usually Mean a Part
UC or 9C power supply
The machine is seeing voltage outside its accepted range. Sometimes genuinely the supply โ an extension lead or a shared circuit under load โ and worth plugging directly into a wall socket to rule out. When the supply is clean, this points at the control board.
DC or DC3 door not confirmed shut
The lock is not reporting engaged. The technician checks for laundry trapped in the seal first, then the latch itself. A failing lock assembly will often cycle between working and not working for weeks before it stops entirely.
LE or 1E water level sensing
The pressure sensor that tells the machine how full it is has lost its reading, usually because its hose is blocked or has come off. Worth taking seriously even though the machine may still run: a washer that cannot judge its own water level can overfill, and that arrives as a leak.
3E, 3C or AC6 motor and drive
The motor is not turning as commanded, or the control cannot read the rotor position. This is the branch where the repair moves toward the top of the range, because it involves the drive rather than a peripheral component.
HE, HC or H1 heating
The water is not reaching temperature in the expected time. The element or its thermistor has failed, and the machine will often keep washing in cold water while displaying the code โ which is why it gets ignored for months.
OE, OC or OF overfilling
Water above the intended level. Treat it as urgent rather than informational: it usually shares a cause with the level sensing above, and an overfilling machine puts water on the floor before anyone decides what to do about the code.
๐ Which Codes Actually Bring Us Out
Where a specific code was recorded in the job notes, this is how our Samsung washer visits distributed. Not every job records the code, but the ranking is consistent, and the leader is not close.
| Code | What it means | Jobs where recorded |
|---|---|---|
| 4C / 4E | Water supply not arriving | 13 |
| UB / UE | Unbalanced load | 6 |
| SC / 5C | Not draining | 7 |
| UR | Spin and balance related | 4 |
| SE | Drain related | 4 |
| AC6 / DC3 | Communication and door | 5 |
From jobs where the technician recorded the code in the notes. Not every visit does, so treat these as relative frequency rather than a complete census.
The pattern is worth pausing on: the most common code we are called out for, 4C, usually traces to the supply side first: a tap, a hose or a mesh filter, and only then the inlet valve. Giving us the code at booking lets the technician bring the right part for either outcome.
๐งพ What a Samsung Washer Repair Costs
| Repair | Jobs | Typical invoice |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnostic visit, applied to repair | โ | $99 |
| Any Samsung washer job with a code | 84 | $386 |
| Washer repair of any kind, all brands | 4,763 | $370 |
Median completed invoice โ part, labour and the service call together. Middle half of code-related jobs: $327 to $464.
The spread matters more than the median here. A drain or supply code that turns out to be a filter is at the bottom of that range or below it; a drive or control fault is at the top. Since the display gives the same four characters in both cases, the code narrows the field but does not price the job.
Why Samsung Codes Are Harder to Read Than Most
Two things make this brand more confusing than it needs to be. The first is that the same fault appears under different characters depending on the model year and the display type: water supply shows as 4E on one machine and 4C on another, drain as 5E or 5C, door as DE or DC. They are the same diagnosis with different labels.
The second is that a digital display can show a character ambiguously. A 5 and an S look alike on a seven-segment display, as do 6 and G, and 1 and I. A code written down as SC may have been 5C โ which is the same fault anyway, but it makes searching the manual harder than it should be.
The practical approach: note the characters, note what the machine was doing when it stopped โ filling, washing, draining, spinning โ and treat the second as at least as informative as the first. A code that appears during fill is about water arriving, whatever letters it uses.
When a Code Is Not the Real Problem
Codes describe symptoms, not causes, and on this brand three of them regularly point somewhere other than where they seem to.
A drain code on a machine that drains fine usually means the pump is working but the filter is partly blocked, so flow is below what the machine expects within its timeout. The machine is right, the code is misleading.
An unbalance code that persists after redistributing the load is rarely about that load โ it is the suspension losing its ability to control drum movement, which is covered on Samsung washer making noise since it usually announces itself as banging first.
And a level or overfill code very often becomes a leak before it becomes anything else. If your machine has shown one of these and you have since found water on the floor, they are the same fault โ see washer leaks for how that progresses.
The Mesh Filters Almost Nobody Knows About
Since the supply code is the one we attend most, it is worth describing the part behind it, because most owners have never seen it.
Where each inlet hose screws onto the back of the machine there is a small removable mesh screen, roughly the size of a thumbnail. Its job is to stop grit and scale from the plumbing reaching the inlet valve. It has no moving parts and it never fails โ it simply fills up, gradually, over years.
As it fills, flow drops. The machine still gets water, just more slowly, and for a long time nothing seems wrong because the fill stage takes a little longer than it used to. Then one day it takes longer than the timeout allows and the display shows a supply code on a machine that was working yesterday.
On a supply code the technician turns off both taps, takes the hoses off at the machine end, pulls the screens, rinses them and reconnects, then checks the fill against the inlet valve. On hard water, an annual screen clean keeps the code away.
The reason this matters beyond the code itself is that a starved inlet valve works harder and longer on every fill, so a blocked screen shortens the life of a part that costs considerably more than a screen clean.
What to Tell Us When You Book
Four pieces of information change what the technician brings and how long the visit takes.
The code itself, exactly as displayed, ideally photographed. The stage of the cycle when it appeared โ filling, washing, draining or spinning. Whether it happens on every cycle or only some. And whether anything changed recently: a new detergent, a move, a plumbing repair in the house, a filter replacement.
That last one catches more faults than people expect. A supply code that started the week after a plumber worked on the house is usually disturbed sediment in the mesh screens, not a failed valve โ and knowing that beforehand means the right tools come through the door.
๐ Where These Numbers Come From
Every figure on this page comes from completed Samsung washer repairs in our own service records: 1,096 jobs in total, of which 151 involved a code on the display and 84 ended in a part being replaced at a recorded price. Nothing here is taken from a manufacturer manual or a parts catalogue.
These are machines we were called to, so the figures describe what breaks rather than how often Samsung washers break compared with anything else. The frequency table comes from codes technicians recorded in their notes.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does 4C mean on a Samsung washer?
The machine asked for water and did not receive enough within its time limit. It is the code we record most often on Samsung washers, and it usually traces to the supply side first: both taps fully open, inlet hoses free of kinks behind the machine, and clean mesh filters where the hoses screw into the machine. If all three are clear, the inlet valve is the next suspect, and that is a technician repair.
Which Samsung washer codes describe a condition rather than a part?
Three usually describe a condition: UB or UE, which is an unbalanced load and clears by spreading the washing by hand; 4C or 4E, which is usually taps, hoses or the inlet mesh filters; and 5C, 5E or SC, which is usually the pump filter behind the bottom panel clogged with lint and coins. Codes about the motor, the control board or heating need a technician.
How much does it cost to fix a Samsung washer showing an error code?
The typical completed repair is $386, with the middle half between $327 and $464, including part, labour and the service call. The code narrows the field but does not set the price โ a supply code that turns out to be a blocked filter sits at the bottom of that range, while a drive or control fault sits at the top. The $99 diagnostic is waived when you approve the repair.
Why does the same fault show different codes on different Samsung washers?
Because the character set changed across model years and display types. Water supply appears as 4E on some machines and 4C on others, drain as 5E or 5C, door as DE or DC. They are the same diagnosis under different labels, so what the machine was doing when it stopped โ filling, draining, spinning โ tells you as much as the characters do.
The code cleared itself. Should I still book a repair?
Yes for level, overfill and drive codes. Unbalance and supply codes clear legitimately once the condition that triggered them is gone. Level, overfill and drive codes that come and go are usually an intermittent fault getting worse, and the gap between occurrences shortens over time. If it has appeared more than twice, photograph it and book.
Can I keep using the machine while it shows a code?
For unbalance and drain codes, yes, until the technician arrives. For overfill or water level codes, no โ those precede water on the floor often enough that running another load is a gamble against your flooring rather than against the machine.
Samsung Washer Code You Cannot Clear?
Tell us the code and what the machine was doing when it stopped โ it shortens the visit and helps the technician arrive with the right part.
