Dryer Fire Statistics: 13,820 Home Fires a Year and What Causes Them
Clothes dryers start close to fourteen thousand home fires a year in the United States, and a third of them begin with something a homeowner can prevent for free. This page pairs the national fire data published by the National Fire Protection Association with what we see on service calls: 2,277 dryer visits from our own records. The two sources tell different halves of the same story. The fire data says lint is the leading cause. Our repair data says almost nobody calls a technician about lint — they call when the clothes stop drying, which is the same fault at a later stage.
What actually starts a dryer fire
The NFPA analysis assigns a contributing factor to each fire. The results are unusually clear for fire statistics — one cause dominates, and it is not a component failure.

A separate cut of the same data names what caught fire first. In 27% of dryer fires the first item ignited was dust, fibre or lint — which is what makes the failure-to-clean figure concrete rather than abstract. It is not a maintenance scolding. It is a specific material, accumulating in a specific place, reaching its ignition point.
Gas or electric does not change the risk
This is the question we get asked most often, and the data answers it plainly. Of the dryers involved in home fires, 78% were electric and 22% were gas. That looks damning for electric until you set it against how many of each are installed: the American Housing Survey put household dryers at 79% electric and 21% gas in 2017. The fire share and the ownership share are the same number. Neither fuel is meaningfully more dangerous than the other.
That matters because it redirects attention to where the risk actually lives. A dryer fire is overwhelmingly a story about airflow and accumulated lint, not about what heats the drum. Gas dryers carry their own separate hazard — combustion products and the need for a sound flue — but the fire statistics do not show them igniting more often.

Only 5.1% of our dryer visits are about the vent. Yet a failure to clean is behind 32% of dryer fires nationally. That is the whole problem in two numbers. A restricted vent is the single largest fire cause and one of the smallest reasons anyone picks up the phone.
The reason is not that homeowners are careless. It is that a blocked vent does not announce itself. It presents as something else entirely — the load takes two cycles, or the machine stops heating — and by then the restriction has already been cooking the components for months. The two biggest categories in that table, not heating at 26.7% and takes too long at 6.5%, are frequently the same underlying fault as the vent line, arriving later and under a different name.
One more figure worth stating, because it cuts against the usual assumption about repair economics. When we quote a dryer repair, only 16.4% of customers decline it — the lowest walk-away rate of any appliance we service, against 36.9% across all categories. Dryers get fixed. Whatever else is true about how households decide, they do not treat a broken dryer as disposable, which makes the maintenance case easier to act on than it is for most appliances. Warning signs a vent is restricted
These are the symptoms that appear before the fire risk becomes acute, in roughly the order they show up. Any one of them is a reason to check the duct rather than the drum.
- Loads need a second cycle. The earliest and most ignored sign. Nothing has broken yet — the moist air simply is not leaving.
- The outside of the dryer is hot to the touch at the end of a cycle. Heat that should have gone down the duct stayed in the cabinet.
- The laundry room is humid or smells musty while the dryer runs. Moisture is escaping into the room instead of outdoors.
- Clothes come out hotter than usual but still damp. The machine is compensating with temperature for air it cannot move.
- The exterior vent flap does not open when the dryer runs, or barely moves. Check it from outside with the machine on.
- A faint burning or scorched smell. Stop using the dryer. This one is not an early sign.
What you can do yourself, at no cost
- Empty the lint screen after every load, not every few. This is the part most people already do, and it remains the single highest-value habit.
- Wash the screen under running water twice a year. Fabric softener and dryer sheets leave an invisible film across the mesh that blocks air while looking perfectly clean. If water pools on the screen instead of running through, the film is there.
- Check the exterior vent hood with the dryer running. The flap should open and you should feel steady warm air. No flap movement means a blockage, a crushed duct, or a bird nest.
- Look behind the machine. Flexible foil or plastic ducting kinks and traps lint. Rigid or semi-rigid metal duct is the safer arrangement, and a shorter run with fewer bends is better than a long one.
- Never run the dryer overnight or while the house is empty. The NFPA fire counts include incidents that would have been caught in minutes had anyone been home.

How do I know if my dryer vent is blocked?
The earliest sign is loads needing a second cycle. After that: the cabinet is hot to the touch at the end of a cycle, the laundry room feels humid while the dryer runs, clothes come out hot but still damp, and the exterior vent flap barely opens or does not open at all when the machine is running. A burning or scorched smell is not an early sign — stop using the dryer and have it inspected.
How much does it cost to clear a blocked dryer vent?

Paying before the failure and paying after it cost about the same, but only one of them also removes the fire risk.
Why do so few people call about the vent?
Because a blocked vent presents as a different problem. Only 5.1% of our 2,277 dryer visits were booked about a vent, duct or lint blockage, while 26.7% were booked because the dryer had stopped heating and 6.5% because loads were taking too long. Those last two are frequently the same fault arriving later, after the restriction has been stressing the components for months.
Should I run the dryer while I am out or asleep?
No. It is the one behavioural change that costs nothing and changes outcomes rather than odds. A dryer fire that starts with someone in the house is often caught within minutes; the same fire in an empty house is what produces the death and property-damage figures in the national data.
Is an older dryer more dangerous?
Age matters less than ducting and maintenance. The NFPA data attributes far more fires to a failure to clean than to component wear, and our service records show vent problems appearing across machines of every age. That said, flexible foil or plastic ducting — common on older installations — kinks and traps lint in a way rigid metal duct does not, so an old dryer on old ducting is a worse combination than an old dryer alone.
