We are not going to tell you why the spread between brands looks like this, because we would be guessing at design differences we cannot verify from service records. What we can tell you is what we find when we open these machines, and that is consistent enough to be worth acting on.
The Element Is the Symptom, the Vent Is the Cause
A dryer heats air, passes it through the drum, and pushes the moisture out through a vent. Restrict that vent and the heat has nowhere to go, so it builds inside the cabinet. The element then runs far hotter than it was designed to, and either the safety thermostat cuts the circuit or the element itself fails.
That is why a heating element replaced without clearing the vent is an element that will fail again. It is also why the numbers in that table should be read together rather than separately: a high no heat share and a high element share describe the same chain, not two problems.

Look at the vent line against the element line: $365 to clear the vent, $375 to replace the element the vent destroyed. Doing the cheap one on a schedule removes most of the reason for the expensive one, and it is the single highest value item on this page. What to Check Before You Call
Three things, all free, and between them they resolve or narrow a real share of no heat calls.
The lint screen, properly. Not just emptied. Hold it under running water: if the water pools rather than passing straight through, there is an invisible film on the mesh from fabric softener sheets. Warm water and a brush clears it. A blocked screen restricts airflow exactly like a blocked duct.
The vent outlet outside. Run the dryer and put your hand at the exterior hood. There should be strong, warm airflow. Weak or cool airflow with the machine running means the restriction is between the drum and the wall, and no part inside the dryer will fix that.
The hose behind the machine. A crushed flexible duct where the dryer was pushed back against the wall is one of the most common causes we find, and it costs nothing to pull the machine out and look.
If drying time has gradually doubled rather than heat disappearing outright, that is the same fault at an earlier and cheaper stage. Report that rather than waiting for it to stop working.

Noise is worth acting on rather than living with. Drum rollers wear gradually and the sound builds slowly enough that people stop hearing it, but a roller that seizes takes the belt with it and can score the drum, turning a $333 repair into a much larger one.
Gas or Electric Changes What Happens Next
Samsung sells both, they fail for the same reason, and the vent does not care which it is heating. What changes is the consequence of leaving it.
An electric dryer with a restricted vent overheats, the thermal cut out opens, and the machine stops heating. Annoying, and self limiting. A gas dryer with a restricted vent has a burner running against poor airflow, which is a combustion question as well as a drying one. That is the case where we would rather see the machine sooner rather than after another month of two hour cycles.

Error Codes Point at a Circuit
Sixty eight of these jobs arrive quoted as a code, at a median of $378, which is the same as everything else on the page. That is the point worth taking from it: a code identifies which circuit reported a problem, not which component failed.
A heating related code can mean the element, a thermostat, a thermal cut out, or a control that is not calling for heat at all, and behind any of those there may still be a vent. Write the code down exactly as displayed, and note whether it clears on a power cycle and how long it takes to return. A code that comes back within one cycle and one that comes back after a week point at different things.
Why Samsung Is 20% of Our Dryer Work
Because a great many are installed in the homes we serve, frequently as part of a matched pair bought with the washer. That share describes how often we are called to a Samsung, and it follows the size of the installed base. It is not a reliability ranking and we would not present it as one.
The comparison that is fair is cost, and there Samsung runs $372 against $349 for every other brand. On a repair of this size that difference is marginal. Samsung dryers cost close to what any dryer costs to repair; what differs is which repair you are most likely to need.
Repair or Replace
Repair, in almost every case. A dryer is a simple machine, a motor, a belt, a heater, a blower and a few switches, and all of them are serviceable parts in the $319 to $398 band. Against the price of a new machine plus delivery and installation, one repair is not a close decision.
Two exceptions. A control board on an older machine, which is the one dryer part that approaches a meaningful share of replacement cost. And a machine that keeps failing the same way after the vent has been cleared and confirmed, which means either the duct run itself is beyond what the machine can work against, or the drum and bearings are worn out. Another element will not change either.
Keeping It Away
- Clean the lint screen every load, and wash it twice a year. The invisible softener film is the most missed maintenance item on any dryer.
- Put the vent run on a calendar, annually for a household and more often for a long or shared run. At $365 it is cheaper than what it prevents.
- Do not crush the duct when pushing the machine back. Leave clearance behind it.
- Treat longer drying times as the fault, not an inconvenience. That is the warning stage and it is the cheap one.
- Do not overload. A packed drum cannot tumble, so air does not pass through the load and the machine runs longer and hotter for the same result.
