Built-In or Over-the-Range Microwave Not Heating?

The one warning that matters more than everything else on this page. A microwave contains a high-voltage capacitor that stores a lethal charge, and it holds that charge after the unit is unplugged — potentially for a long time. This is not the usual “be careful” boilerplate you skim past on appliance sites: a microwave capacitor kills people who assumed unplugging was sufficient. Technicians discharge it deliberately with an insulated tool before touching anything inside. There is nothing serviceable behind that panel for a homeowner, and no YouTube video makes it safe. Do not remove the outer case.

The reason a microwave fails this specific way is worth understanding, because it explains the whole diagnosis. Two largely separate systems live inside one box. The low-voltage side runs the display, the timer, the turntable motor, the light and the cooling fan — ordinary household electronics. The high-voltage side does the actual cooking: a transformer steps 120 volts up to several thousand, a capacitor and diode convert and store it, and the magnetron uses that to generate the microwave energy that heats your food.

When the high-voltage side fails, the low-voltage side carries on as if nothing happened. Everything looks perfect — the display counts down, the plate spins, the light is on, the fan hums. Only the food stays cold. That combination of a fully functional appliance producing zero heat is the signature of a high-voltage failure, and it is why this fault feels so confusing to people.


Check These Three Things First, They Are Free

Before assuming anything expensive, rule out the causes that need no parts and no technician. The first one in particular catches people out regularly.

  • Demo mode or showroom mode. Many microwaves have a display mode intended for shop floors: everything lights up and runs, but the magnetron never fires. It can be switched on accidentally by a key combination, and it survives a power cut. Check your manual for how to exit — it is often holding a specific button for several seconds, or pressing off and then a number sequence. If your microwave is newish and stopped heating with no warning at all, check this before anything else.
  • Child lock. Less likely to produce this exact symptom, but on some models a partially engaged lock allows the cycle to start without cooking. Look for a lock indicator on the display.
  • Whether the door is actually latching properly. A microwave has multiple interlock switches that must all confirm a closed door before the magnetron energises. A door that closes but does not latch fully, a worn latch hook, or a sagging door can leave one switch unconfirmed. The unit then runs everything except the heat, by design, as a safety measure.
The one-minute water test that confirms the fault: put a cup with about a cup of cold water in the microwave and run it for one minute on full power. Water heats fast, so after a minute it should be noticeably warm to hot. If it is still cold, the microwave genuinely is not producing heat. If it warmed up, your appliance works and the original problem was the food, the container, or a cycle setting. Never run an empty microwave for this test — with no water to absorb the energy it reflects back into the magnetron and damages it.

What Has Actually Failed

Assuming the water test confirms no heat and demo mode is ruled out, one of these five is the cause. They are listed roughly by how often we find them.

Door interlock switches

The cheapest and most common cause, and the good news of this list. Three or four small switches monitor the door, and the magnetron only fires when all of them agree the door is shut. They are mechanical, they get pressed thousands of times, and they wear out. A failed interlock produces exactly this symptom — everything runs, no heat — and it is a genuinely economical repair.

Magnetron

The component that generates the microwave energy. When it fails, heat stops completely and abruptly, sometimes accompanied by a loud buzzing or humming in the cycles just before it gave up. Magnetrons have a finite life measured in operating hours, so this is the typical end-of-life failure on a heavily used unit. It is also the most expensive individual part, which is why the repair-or-replace question below matters.

High-voltage diode

Converts the transformer output into the direct current the magnetron needs. A failed diode stops heating entirely, and frequently produces a loud buzz during the cycle. It is an inexpensive part but sits in the most dangerous part of the appliance, right next to the capacitor.

High-voltage capacitor

Stores and smooths the high voltage. When it fails, heating stops. This is the component holding the lethal charge, and it is the specific reason a microwave is not a DIY appliance.

Thermal fuse or thermal cutout

A safety device that opens if the unit overheats, commonly because the ventilation grilles were blocked or the cooling fan failed. It cuts the heating circuit while leaving the controls alive. Worth noting the pattern: if a thermal cutout has tripped, something caused the overheating, and replacing the fuse without finding that cause repeats the failure.


Match Your Symptom to the Likely Cause

  • Everything runs, food cold, no noise change → magnetron or interlock
  • Loud buzzing or humming, no heat → diode or capacitor
  • Was heating, quit suddenly, no warning → magnetron end of life
  • Newish unit, stopped with no cause → demo or showroom mode
  • Door feels loose or sits crooked → interlock switch or latch
  • Heats sometimes, not others → interlock intermittent
  • Stopped after running very hot → thermal cutout tripped
  • Sparking or burning smell inside → stop using it now
  • Display dead, nothing at all → power, not heating circuit
  • Plate not turning but heats fine → turntable motor, unrelated

Repair or Replace: the Honest Maths

Replacing one means matching a specific cabinet cutout, often a discontinued trim kit, plus removal and installation labour, and on combination wall units the price can run well past a thousand dollars. What Shortens a Microwave’s Life

Magnetrons wear out on operating hours, but several habits accelerate it considerably, and they are all avoidable.

  • Running it empty → energy reflects back, damages magnetron
  • Blocked ventilation grilles → overheating, trips thermal cutout
  • Very small loads repeatedly → too little mass to absorb energy
  • Damaged waveguide cover left in place → arcing into the magnetron
  • Slamming the door → wears the interlock switches early
  • Metal or foil inside → arcing, immediate damage
  • Over-range unit venting a hot cooktop → constant heat load
  • Grease buildup on interior and filters → heat plus fire risk

The over-the-range point deserves attention because it is specific to how these units are installed. A microwave mounted directly above a gas or electric range spends its life absorbing the rising heat from cooking below, which is a thermal load a countertop unit never sees. Keeping the grease filters clean and running the vent fan while cooking measurably helps, and it is the single most useful maintenance habit for that installation type.
