An Oven Door Is Two or Three Panes, Not One
This is the fact that explains every price on this page. A modern oven door is a sealed assembly: an outer pane you touch, an inner pane facing the cavity, and on most units built in the last decade a third pane between them. Air gaps and a low emissivity coating on one of the surfaces are what keep the outside of the door safe to touch while the cavity runs at 450°F.
Which pane broke changes the job completely.
Outer glass. The most accessible. On many models it can be reached by removing the door and separating the outer trim, without disturbing the sealed inner assembly. This is the cheaper end of the range.
Inner glass. Faces the cavity, sits behind the door liner, and on most units the door has to come off, be laid flat and be fully dismantled. More labor, and the part is model and serial specific because the coating and thickness are matched to the cavity.
Middle pane. Usually not supplied on its own. Where a manufacturer sells only a complete door assembly, the invoice jumps, and that is what the $1,478 at the top of our range looks like.

Glass replacement sits above the median oven repair for a straightforward reason: most oven repairs are an element or an igniter, where the part is cheap and the access is quick. Door glass reverses that. The part is expensive, model specific and often has to travel, and the door has to be dismantled to fit it.
Why Oven Glass Shatters on Its Own
The call we get most often is not from someone who dropped something. It is from someone whose oven door exploded into small cubes while the oven was running or cooling, with nobody near it. That sounds alarming and it is a known behaviour of the material rather than a fault in your oven.
Oven door glass is tempered. Tempering puts the outer surfaces in compression and the core in tension, which is what makes it far stronger than ordinary glass and what makes it break into blunt granules instead of shards. The trade off is that once a crack starts anywhere, the stored tension releases across the whole pane at once. There is no cracked-but-intact stage.
Three things start it:
A tiny edge chip you never saw. Made months or years earlier by a roasting tin knocking the door edge, or during manufacture. The edge is where tempered glass is weakest, and thermal cycling eventually propagates the flaw.
Thermal shock. A cold wet cloth on hot glass, or a cold draught onto a hot door, creating a temperature difference across one pane faster than it can equalise.
Nickel sulphide inclusions. A microscopic manufacturing impurity that expands slowly over years and eventually breaks the pane from inside. This is the mechanism behind doors that shatter with nothing having happened at all.
The practical consequence: if your door has shattered, it was not something you did wrong that day, and replacing the glass with a correct part is a complete repair rather than a patch.
What to Do Right Now if It Has Just Shattered
- Turn the oven off at the appliance, and at the breaker if the door is damaged enough to interfere with the latch.
- Do not run a self clean cycle and do not use the oven until it is repaired. The remaining panes were engineered to work as a set, and the door will no longer contain heat correctly.
- Leave the granules where they are if the oven is hot. Tempered fragments are blunt but they carry heat and they travel much further than people expect.
- When cool, vacuum rather than sweep, including under and behind the appliance and inside the door channel. Fragments in the door track are what prevent a new pane seating properly.
- Photograph the model and serial plate, usually on the frame behind the door or inside the drawer. The pane is matched to the serial, not just the model.
If glass went into the cavity while food was in it, throw the food out. Tempered granules are small enough to be missed and hard enough to do damage.
Replace the Glass or Replace the Oven
For a freestanding range, replacing the glass is straightforward value at a median of $423 against a new appliance, and it is a repair that returns the oven to as it was rather than patching it.
The decision changes where the manufacturer supplies only a complete door assembly. On an older freestanding range where that assembly runs several hundred dollars plus fitting, and the oven has other age related faults, replacement can be the better answer. We will price the part before committing to the job rather than after, because on this repair the part is the decision.
For built in wall ovens the answer is almost always repair regardless of cost. The replacement is not just the appliance, it is the cabinetry cut out and the installation, and a door assembly is cheaper than that even at the top of our range.
One case we will decline: if the correct pane is no longer manufactured for your model, fitting a substitute is not something we will do. The glass is part of a thermal system and the wrong thickness or missing coating means an outer door that gets hot enough to burn.
Why This Is Not a Do It Yourself Repair
The part is orderable and the videos exist, so the temptation is real. Three reasons we would still send a technician.
The door is under spring tension. Oven door hinges hold considerable force to support the door’s weight through its travel. Released uncontrolled during removal they will take a finger, and this is the injury we hear about most from attempted door work.
The panes have an orientation. The low emissivity coating faces a specific direction and the air gaps have specific spacers. Assembled backwards, the door looks perfect and runs dangerously hot on the outside.
Fragments hide in the channel. Any granule left in the seat stops the new pane sitting flat and stresses it exactly the way the last one failed.
The Other Reason Doors Come Apart
Not every door call is broken glass. Across 124 completed oven door repairs of all kinds the median is $391, and a large share of those are doors that no longer close square rather than doors that shattered.
The mechanism matters because it is preventable. A door that has been leaned on, or that has taken the weight of a heavy tray, twists at the hinges. It then sits proud at one corner, heat escapes past the seal, and the oven takes longer to reach temperature and holds it poorly. People report that as a temperature fault and it is a mechanical one. If your door no longer closes flush along its whole length, that is worth saying when you call, because it changes what the technician brings.
Making the Next One Last
- Protect the door edge. Nearly every shatter starts at an edge chip. Do not rest hot trays against the open door.
- Never put anything cold and wet on hot glass, including a damp cloth during cleaning. Let the door cool first.
- Do not use scrapers or abrasive pads on the inner pane. Scratches concentrate stress in exactly the place that matters.
- Be cautious with self clean on older ovens. The cycle runs far hotter than normal cooking and is the moment a pre existing edge flaw is most likely to let go.
- Do not let the door take weight. Leaning on an open oven door twists the hinges and loads the glass unevenly.
