First, Is It a Leak or Water That Will Not Drain?
These look similar and are entirely different repairs, so it is worth separating them before anything else.
Water standing in the bottom of the tub after a cycle, with a dry floor, is a drainage problem. The dishwasher is holding water it should have pumped out. That is the drain pump, the hose or a blocked filter, and it is covered on our dishwasher not draining page.
Water on the floor is a leak. Something is letting water escape the tub. Those are the faults below.
A small amount of clean water sitting in the sump at the very bottom is normal on most models and is there to keep the seals from drying out. It becomes a problem when the level is above the filter or the water is dirty.

Dishwasher Leaking from the Bottom of the Door
This is the most common single version of the complaint, and it is worth its own answer because the cause is specific.
The door seal on most dishwashers is not one continuous loop. The sides and top are covered by a gasket in the tub opening, and the bottom edge is sealed by a separate strip along the base of the door, sometimes called the door bottom seal or splash guard. That lower strip takes the most abuse. It gets stepped on, it collects food debris, and it hardens with age until it no longer compresses.

Before assuming the seal has failed, clean it. Food residue and grease build up on the sealing face, and a strip that looks intact can be held open by a millimetre of debris. Wipe the seal and the surface it meets with hot soapy water, then run a cycle.
Water on the Floor at the Front
Water appearing under the front edge, below the kick plate, has come from the base of the machine rather than the door. Remove the kick plate, the lower panel held by two screws, and look inside with a torch. You will usually find the source directly.
The candidates are the sump gasket where the tub meets the base, the pump seal, the water inlet valve connection and the hose clamps. A leak that only appears when the machine runs and never when it sits idle points at the pump side. A leak that appears even when the dishwasher is off points at the inlet side, which is under mains pressure continuously.
Leak Underneath the Dishwasher, Not in Front
Water pooling beneath the unit but not visible at the front is often not the dishwasher at all. The sink drain, the garbage disposal connection and the water supply line all sit in the same cabinet, and a slow drip from any of them collects under the nearest appliance.
Worth checking before booking a repair: dry the area completely, put newspaper down, and run the dishwasher. Then run the sink taps and the disposal without the dishwasher. Whichever one wets the paper is your source. This takes twenty minutes and occasionally saves a service call entirely.
Leaking Only During the Wash Cycle
During wash, the circulation pump drives water through the spray arms at pressure. Anything with a weak point shows it under that pressure and nowhere else.
A cracked spray arm, a loose spray arm mount, a perished hose inside the cabinet or a hairline crack in the tub will all leak during wash and stay dry the rest of the time. The circulation motor seal is another candidate and runs a median of 374 dollars across 122 jobs.
Leaking Only When It Drains
The drain line carries water only at the end of the cycle, so a leak that appears at that moment and no other has to be on that line. Usually it is the clamp where the drain hose meets the pump, or the connection at the sink or garbage disposal.
That last one is worth knowing. A new garbage disposal installed without knocking out the internal dishwasher plug will cause the dishwasher to back up and overflow, and the installer often does not realise. If your leak started after disposal work, that is the first thing to check.
Water Sitting in the Bottom of the Dishwasher

Suds and Foam Across the Floor

The usual causes are a supply line not tightened fully, a drain hose without the required high loop, the disposal knockout plug still in place, or the machine sitting out of level so water pools to one side of the tub.
Levelling matters more than people expect. A dishwasher tilted forward will let water reach the bottom of the door on every cycle even with a perfect seal.
Leaking Into the Basement or the Ceiling Below
A dishwasher on an upper floor that leaks into the space below has usually been leaking for a while, because the water travels through the subfloor before it becomes visible.
This is the version of the fault to treat with urgency, since the cost of the repair is small next to the cost of the damage. Shut off the water supply to the dishwasher and stop using it until it has been looked at.
What You Can Check Yourself in Ten Minutes
- The detergent. Confirm nobody used washing-up liquid. Foam on the floor is the giveaway.
- Clean the door seal and the tub lip it meets. Grease holds the seal open.
- The paper test. Close the door on a strip of paper at several points. It should grip everywhere.
- The filter. Twist it out and rinse it. This is a user-maintenance part, not a repair.
- Level. A spirit level front to back. A forward tilt puts water against the door on every cycle.
- Isolate the source. Dry the floor, lay newspaper, run the dishwasher alone, then the sink and disposal alone.
- Under the kick plate. Two screws, then look with a torch while the machine runs.
If the seal is clean, the detergent is right and it still leaks, the fault is a seal, a pump or a hose inside the cabinet.
