Why a plastic module costs over $400 to replace
Three things stack up, and none of them is the price of the component.
The first is access. An ice maker sits in the coldest, tightest corner of the appliance, usually behind the bin, often behind a panel, and on many models the freezer has to be partly emptied before the unit can be unclipped. That is time before diagnosis even begins.
The second is that the fault is frequently not in the ice maker. A no-ice call can be the fill valve, the defrost circuit, the evaporator fan, a frozen fill tube or the water filter, and each of those has to be eliminated in turn. The diagnosis on this repair is genuinely longer than on almost any other appliance component, because the symptom is downstream of five possible causes.
The third is water. An ice maker is the only part of a refrigerator plumbed into the house, which drags in the supply line, the shutoff valve and household pressure as candidates. No other appliance component has that many external dependencies.

A water filter job costs nearly as much as the ice maker module itself. It reaches $440, against $449 for the module, because the ticket carries the visit, the diagnosis and the labor, not just the cartridge.

What the ice tells the technician
Cubes are hollow, small or crescent-shaped. Water is arriving, but not enough of it. Filter first, then the supply line behind the cabinet, then the fill tube, in that order.
Ice stopped completely, freezer still solid. Now it is the module or the fill valve — $449 or $428. A valve trying and failing announces itself with a short buzz every couple of hours and no water.
Ice stopped and the freezer feels soft. Not an ice maker problem at all. This is cooling: defrost work at $415 or fan work at $432, and it is the version worth booking quickly, because the freezer contents are on the clock.
The bin holds one solid block instead of cubes. A household that makes ice faster than it uses it. Cubes fuse, the auger loads up, and eventually the auger gears give out. Emptying the bin monthly prevents it entirely.
Water pools under the bin or freezes across the freezer floor. Blocked defrost drain, usually cleared during the diagnosis, or a fill valve seeping after each cycle.
Ice tastes of the freezer. Old ice absorbing odours, or a filter well past its interval. Tip the bin, run a fresh batch, replace the filter if it survives that.

The ice maker is the dearest of the four despite being the smallest component in the group. It is also one of the few repairs where the middle half of the range sits almost entirely above $340 — there is no cheap version of this job, because the diagnosis takes the same time whether the answer turns out to be a valve or a module.
Brands, and where the differences actually show
Across our ice maker work Samsung accounts for 28 percent of branded calls, Whirlpool 25, Frigidaire 15, GE 13, LG 6 and KitchenAid 3. That distribution tracks what people own rather than what fails most, and it is worth saying plainly: it is not a reliability ranking.
Where brand does change the number is parts. Mainstream Whirlpool, GE and Frigidaire modules are stocked, interchangeable across model years and available same-day. Samsung and LG units are more often model-specific, and a built-in or panel-ready refrigerator can require a factory part with a wait. If a quote you have been given seems high for an ice maker, the machine it belongs to usually explains it.
Repair or replace, on an ice maker
This is one of the clearest calls in appliance repair, and it runs opposite to what people expect from the price. Four hundred dollars sounds like a lot for ice until you notice the alternative is replacing a refrigerator that is otherwise working — a machine worth well over a thousand, and often several thousand if it is built in.
The decision only genuinely changes in one situation: when the ice maker is the third thing to fail on a cabinet past a decade old. At that point the question is the compressor and the sealed system, not the module, and fitting a $449 part into a machine with a failing compressor is money thrown after a decision that has already been made. That judgement belongs on the visit, with the cabinet open.

What the $99 diagnostic covers
A technician at the machine with test equipment and the common modules and valves already on the van. On an ice maker that matters more than on most appliances, because the elimination sequence — water at the valve, valve opening under power, fill tube clear, mould heater and thermostat in range, then the module — needs instruments rather than guesswork.
You get a firm number once the fault has a name, and it does not move afterwards. Approve the repair and the $99 comes off the total. Completed work carries a 90-day parts and labor warranty.
What a $415 ticket is actually made of
Most price pages quote a part and leave you to discover the rest at the door. Ours is the whole number, and it is worth seeing how it splits, because the shape explains why cheap parts and expensive parts land so close together.
An ice maker module costs roughly what a decent pair of shoes costs at trade. The rest of the ticket is a technician driving to you, spending forty minutes eliminating five possible causes with a meter, emptying and refitting a freezer compartment, and standing behind the work for ninety days. On a fill valve the part is cheaper still and the labour is longer, because the valve sits at the back of the cabinet behind the access panel. That is why the valve at $428 lands within twenty-one dollars of the module at $449 despite being a far simpler component.
The practical consequence: asking what the part costs tells you almost nothing about your bill. Asking what the full ticket is, including the call-out, tells you everything. Any quote that names only a part price has a second number in it that you have not been shown yet.
How long an ice maker should last
Domestic ice maker modules typically run eight to ten years, which is shorter than the refrigerator around them and is the reason so many otherwise healthy cabinets end up with dead ice makers. If yours failed at year nine, nothing went wrong — it reached the end of its service life.
Two things shorten that meaningfully. Hard water scales the fill valve and the mould, and a household that never empties the bin loads the auger with fused ice every time the dispenser runs. Neither is dramatic on any single day, and both are visible in the failure pattern across thousands of repairs.
Two things extend it: replacing the filter on schedule, and emptying the bin every few weeks if your household does not get through much ice. Between them they address the two most common causes of premature failure we see.
Household ice makers and commercial machines are not the same repair
Worth clearing up, because the search term is the same and the prices are not. Everything on this page refers to the module inside a domestic refrigerator. A standalone commercial ice machine — the kind behind a bar or in a restaurant kitchen — is a separate appliance with its own compressor, condenser and water system, and it is a different repair with a different price structure entirely. The middle case is a built-in undercounter ice maker in a residential kitchen. Those sit closer to commercial machines mechanically than to the module in a refrigerator, and they carry both higher parts costs and longer labour. Why does an ice maker cost as much to fix as a refrigerator?

Is replacing the ice maker cheaper than repairing it?
On domestic refrigerators the module is replaced rather than rebuilt, so that is the same job. What is worth asking is whether the module is the fault at all. In a meaningful share of no-ice calls the module is healthy and the problem is water supply, defrost or a filter — which is why the diagnosis comes before any part is ordered.

Very likely. A filter past its interval restricts flow enough to starve the mould while still producing drinking water at a trickle, so the dispenser keeps working and hides the problem. Is it worth fixing at all?
On a refrigerator that is otherwise working, yes — $415 against a cabinet worth a thousand and up is not a close call. The exception is a machine past a decade where the ice maker is the third failure, because then the real question is the compressor and the sealed system rather than the module.
