A refrigerator that is not cooling can be a failed evaporator fan at $429, a defrost heater at $391, a control board at $512, or a compressor at $956. Nothing visible from the outside separates them. The Ice Maker Is the Most Common Repair — $412

At 899 completed jobs the ice maker assembly dwarfs every other refrigerator repair in the dataset. It is roughly seven times more common than the compressor and nearly seven times more common than the control board. If you own a refrigerator with an ice maker, this is statistically the repair you are most likely to face.

Not Cooling — Evaporator Fan $429, Defrost Heater $391

When the fresh food compartment goes warm while the freezer still holds, the evaporator fan is the usual suspect. It moves cold air from the freezer coil into the refrigerator section, and when it stops, the freezer stays cold while the fridge slowly warms. At 122 completed jobs this is a well-supported figure.

Leaking or Sweating — Door Seal $395

A gasket that no longer seals lets humid room air into the cabinet continuously. The visible result is water pooling inside or condensation on the shelves; the invisible result is a compressor running far more than it should, which shortens its life.

At $395 across 70 jobs the gasket is mid-range, and it is one of the few refrigerator repairs where postponing has a compounding cost: the seal keeps the expensive part alive.

Erratic Behavior — Control Board $512

At $512 across 134 jobs the control board is the second most expensive refrigerator repair, and almost all of that is the part. Symptoms are electronic rather than mechanical: temperatures that drift with no pattern, a display throwing codes, sections cooling independently of their settings.

Boards deserve careful confirmation before replacement, because a failed thermostat or temperature sensor at $372 can produce similar erratic readings for 140 dollars less.

Compressor — $956, and Why It Sits Alone

The compressor is the pump at the heart of the sealed cooling system, and replacing it means opening that system, evacuating it, fitting the new unit and recharging with refrigerant. At $956 it costs roughly two and a half times any other refrigerator repair on this page.

It is worth being precise here: that $956 is the median for jobs where a compressor was actually replaced, across 80 of them. We do not publish a single blended figure for «compressor work», because visits that diagnose a compressor and visits that replace one are two different kinds of job with two different price levels, and averaging them produces a number that describes neither.

🏷️ Refrigerator Repair Cost by Brand

Eleven brands have enough completed jobs to publish. This is the widest brand spread of any appliance we track — from $352 to $556, a difference of 58 percent.

The table sorts into three tiers. Mainstream American brands — Amana, Kenmore, Frigidaire, Maytag, Whirlpool — run $352 to $378. The Korean brands and GE sit at $400 to $423. Built-in and premium equipment, KitchenAid and Thermador, runs $465 to $556.

Samsung is the largest brand cell in the entire index at 916 completed jobs, so its $404 is about as solid a figure as exists on this site. The premium tier costs more for a specific reason: parts are model-specific and often ordered rather than stocked, and panel-ready installations take longer to open and close. 📍 Does Location Change the Price?

Median full invoice by state, published only where at least 50 completed jobs support the figure.

Georgia and Florida carry 5,317 of the 6,063 jobs between them and sit 23 dollars apart. The Carolinas run lower on smaller samples. Across six states the whole spread is 74 dollars, which is less than the difference between two brands on the same street.
