Refrigerator Repair Cost, From Real Invoices
Book a technician today and put the $99 diagnostic toward the repair.
Refrigerators generate more service calls than any other appliance we handle, and the pricing question splits cleanly in two. Almost every repair on a refrigerator falls in a narrow band between $370 and $430. One repair does not: the compressor, which runs more than double everything else. Brand-specific pricing and failures: LG appliance repair in metro Atlanta.
That single split is the most useful thing to know before you get a quote. It means the right question is not «how much does a refrigerator repair cost» but «is this the compressor or is it everything else». The answer changes the number by a factor of two and a half. Every figure on this page is the complete invoice — part, labor and the service call in one number, exactly as the customer paid it. The dataset covers 6,063 completed refrigerator repairs across Florida, Georgia, Texas, North Carolina, South Carolina and Pennsylvania.
💲 What a Refrigerator Repair Costs
| Measure | Amount |
|---|---|
| Median refrigerator repair | $391 |
| Middle 50 percent of jobs | $317 to $500 |
| Diagnostic visit, applied to the repair | $99 |
| Jobs in this dataset | 6,063 |

Full pricing from real invoices: KitchenAid appliance repair. A fridge quote swings widely depending on which part failed, so check your own case in the appliance repair cost calculator before you decide.
Compared with the other appliances we service, a refrigerator sits at the top of the ordinary range: about $63 above a dishwasher, $26 above a washer. Not because refrigerator parts are exotic, but because the work is often behind a sealed panel or under the unit, and access is labor. Full pricing from real invoices: ice maker repair in Dallas.
🔍 What the $99 Diagnostic Buys
The visit starts at $99 and comes off the repair when you approve the work. On a refrigerator that diagnostic is worth more than on any other appliance, because the same symptom sits in front of repairs that differ by 500 dollars. Full pricing from real invoices: refrigerator repair in Houston.
A refrigerator that is not cooling can be a failed evaporator fan at $429, a defrost heater at $391, a control board at $512, or a compressor at $956. Nothing visible from the outside separates them. The technician puts a meter on the sealed system and the fan circuit, then quotes a firm number before touching anything. Full pricing from real invoices: what breaks by brand.

The Ice Maker Is the Most Common Repair — $412
At 899 completed jobs the ice maker assembly dwarfs every other refrigerator repair in the dataset. It is roughly seven times more common than the compressor and nearly seven times more common than the control board. If you own a refrigerator with an ice maker, this is statistically the repair you are most likely to face.
The reason is design rather than defect: the ice maker is the one part of a refrigerator with a motor, a heater, a water valve and a moving arm all working in a freezing compartment. More moving pieces in a harsher environment means shorter life. Symptom guide: ice maker not making ice.
Not Cooling — Evaporator Fan $429, Defrost Heater $391
When the fresh food compartment goes warm while the freezer still holds, the evaporator fan is the usual suspect. It moves cold air from the freezer coil into the refrigerator section, and when it stops, the freezer stays cold while the fridge slowly warms. At 122 completed jobs this is a well-supported figure.
Sitting beside it is the defrost system. When the defrost heater or timer fails, frost builds on the evaporator coil until air can no longer pass through, producing the same warm-fridge symptom by a different route. Both land in the same price band. Full symptom guide: refrigerator not cooling.
Leaking or Sweating — Door Seal $395
A gasket that no longer seals lets humid room air into the cabinet continuously. The visible result is water pooling inside or condensation on the shelves; the invisible result is a compressor running far more than it should, which shortens its life.
At $395 across 70 jobs the gasket is mid-range, and it is one of the few refrigerator repairs where postponing has a compounding cost: the seal keeps the expensive part alive.
Erratic Behavior — Control Board $512
At $512 across 134 jobs the control board is the second most expensive refrigerator repair, and almost all of that is the part. Symptoms are electronic rather than mechanical: temperatures that drift with no pattern, a display throwing codes, sections cooling independently of their settings.
Boards deserve careful confirmation before replacement, because a failed thermostat or temperature sensor at $372 can produce similar erratic readings for 140 dollars less.
Compressor — $956, and Why It Sits Alone
The compressor is the pump at the heart of the sealed cooling system, and replacing it means opening that system, evacuating it, fitting the new unit and recharging with refrigerant. At $956 it costs roughly two and a half times any other refrigerator repair on this page.
It is worth being precise here: that $956 is the median for jobs where a compressor was actually replaced, across 80 of them. We do not publish a single blended figure for «compressor work», because visits that diagnose a compressor and visits that replace one are two different kinds of job with two different price levels, and averaging them produces a number that describes neither.
On a unit past twelve years, the compressor quote is genuinely the point where repair and replacement come close. Background on the failure mode and how to recognize it: signs of a bad refrigerator compressor, and on one widely reported design: LG linear compressor failure.
⚡ Not sure whether yours is the compressor or the fan? That is precisely what the diagnostic settles, and the difference is over 500 dollars. Firm price before any work starts.
🏷️ Refrigerator Repair Cost by Brand
Eleven brands have enough completed jobs to publish. This is the widest brand spread of any appliance we track — from $352 to $556, a difference of 58 percent.
| Brand | Jobs | Median invoice |
|---|---|---|
| Amana | 32 | $352 |
| Kenmore | 126 | $356 |
| Frigidaire | 767 | $366 |
| Maytag | 111 | $378 |
| Whirlpool | 786 | $378 |
| GE | 882 | $400 |
| Samsung | 916 | $404 |
| LG | 471 | $423 |
| Bosch | 40 | $435 |
| KitchenAid | 145 | $465 |
| Thermador | 28 | $556 |
Median full invoice by brand, published only where at least 25 completed jobs support the figure.
The table sorts into three tiers. Mainstream American brands — Amana, Kenmore, Frigidaire, Maytag, Whirlpool — run $352 to $378. The Korean brands and GE sit at $400 to $423. Built-in and premium equipment, KitchenAid and Thermador, runs $465 to $556.
Samsung is the largest brand cell in the entire index at 916 completed jobs, so its $404 is about as solid a figure as exists on this site. The premium tier costs more for a specific reason: parts are model-specific and often ordered rather than stocked, and panel-ready installations take longer to open and close. 📍 Does Location Change the Price?
| State | Jobs | Median invoice |
|---|---|---|
| Georgia | 2,199 | $412 |
| Pennsylvania | 80 | $403 |
| Florida | 3,118 | $389 |
| Texas | 245 | $367 |
| North Carolina | 286 | $364 |
| South Carolina | 86 | $338 |
Median full invoice by state, published only where at least 50 completed jobs support the figure.
Georgia and Florida carry 5,317 of the 6,063 jobs between them and sit 23 dollars apart. The Carolinas run lower on smaller samples. Across six states the whole spread is 74 dollars, which is less than the difference between two brands on the same street.

⚖️ Repair or Replace: The Arithmetic
A new mid-range refrigerator runs roughly 900 to 2,000 dollars before delivery, and built-in or counter-depth models run well past that. Set the quote against the replacement and the decision usually makes itself.
- Anything that is not the compressor: at $372 to $512 against a 1,200 dollar replacement, repair wins at almost any age.
- Compressor, unit under eight years: $956 against a new unit still favors the repair, particularly on a model you like.
- Compressor, unit past twelve years: this is the genuine break-even. Other components are near the end of their life too, and a second failure inside a year is likely.
- Built-in, counter-depth or panel-ready: repair wins almost regardless, because replacement means matching a cabinet opening and a custom panel on top of the appliance price.
- Ice maker only, everything else fine: $412 on a working refrigerator is straightforward. Nobody replaces a refrigerator over its ice maker.

📊 Where These Numbers Come From
Most refrigerator pricing published online is an estimate — a range from contractor surveys, or a calculator multiplying a labor rate by a guessed number of hours. This page is neither.
Every figure comes from completed refrigerator repairs in our own service records, 6,063 of them, each an invoice a customer actually paid. The method is published so the numbers can be checked:
- Completed jobs only. Scheduled work and cancellations are excluded entirely.
- Full invoice. Parts, labor and the service call in one figure, never the part alone.
- Medians, not averages. A single 4,900 dollar built-in job should not drag the typical price upward.
- Interquartile ranges alongside. You see the middle half of real invoices, not one tidy number.
- Minimum sample sizes. Part-level figures need at least 10 completed jobs, brand figures 25, state figures 50.
- One appliance per job. Visits covering two appliances are excluded, so a dishwasher repair never inflates a refrigerator figure.
- No blended figures across job types. Where a repair category mixes two genuinely different kinds of work at two price levels, we publish the specific one or nothing. That is why the compressor line reads «replacement» rather than «compressor work».

Refrigerator Repair Cost FAQ
How much does refrigerator repair cost on average?
The median refrigerator repair in our records is $391, covering parts, labor and the service call together. Half of all completed repairs fall between $317 and $500. That figure comes from 6,063 completed refrigerator jobs rather than an estimate.
How much does it cost to replace a refrigerator compressor?
A compressor replacement runs a median of $956 across 80 completed jobs, including parts, labor and the service call. It costs roughly two and a half times any other refrigerator repair, because it means opening the sealed cooling system, fitting the new unit and recharging with refrigerant.
What is the most common refrigerator repair?
The ice maker assembly, at 899 completed jobs in our dataset — roughly seven times more common than either the compressor or the control board. It runs a median of $412. The ice maker combines a motor, a heater, a water valve and a moving arm inside a freezing compartment, so it wears faster than the rest of the appliance.
Why is my fridge warm but the freezer still cold?
Usually the evaporator fan, which moves cold air from the freezer coil into the fresh food section, at a median of $429 across 122 jobs. A failed defrost heater produces the same symptom by letting frost block the coil, at $391. A technician distinguishes them at the diagnostic.
Does the brand of refrigerator change the repair cost?
More than on any other appliance. Mainstream brands run $352 to $378 — Amana, Kenmore, Frigidaire, Maytag and Whirlpool. GE, Samsung and LG run $400 to $423. Premium and built-in equipment such as KitchenAid and Thermador runs $465 to $556, mainly because parts are model-specific and installations take longer to open and close.
Is it worth repairing a ten-year-old refrigerator?
For anything other than the compressor, yes: repairs run $372 to $512 against 900 to 2,000 dollars for a replacement. A compressor quote on a unit past twelve years is the genuine break-even point, because other components are near the end of their service life as well.
What does the $99 diagnostic include?
A technician comes to your home, tests the sealed system and the electrical circuits, identifies the specific fault, then quotes a firm price before any work begins. If you approve the repair, the $99 is credited against the invoice.
How much is a refrigerator repair?
The median is $391 including parts, labor and the service call, from 6,063 completed refrigerator repairs. Half fall between $317 and $500. Everything except the compressor lands between $372 and $512; a compressor replacement runs $956.
