Dishwasher Not Draining
Standing water in a dishwasher is a blockage far more often than a failed pump, and the blockage is usually outside the appliance. The drain path runs filter, sump, pump, drain hose, high loop or air gap, then the garbage disposal inlet or the sink tailpiece — and a clog anywhere along it produces the identical symptom. Two things are worth knowing before you assume the worst.
First, some water at the bottom is supposed to be there: GE states plainly that one to two cups of standing water in the bottom of the tub is normal. Second, if the machine or the disposal was installed recently, the odds shift hard toward an installation detail — a drain hose with no high loop, or a disposal knockout plug that was never punched out.

First: Is It Actually a Fault?
A surprising number of drain complaints are a machine working exactly as designed. GE’s own support documentation states that some standing water, usually one to two cups, remaining in the bottom of the dishwasher tub is normal. That water sits in the sump below the filter, and it is there to keep the pump seals from drying out between cycles.
So the question is not whether there is water, it is how much and what kind. An inch or two of clear water in the recessed sump is normal. Water standing above the filter across the floor of the tub, water that is cloudy or has food debris floating in it, or water that has clearly accumulated over several cycles is not.
GE’s guidance on that second case points at the drain loop, and specifies a minimum of 32 inches above the floor where no air gap is fitted.
The Drain Path, End to End
Understanding the route is the whole diagnosis, because water only ever stops at one of six places, and they are not equally likely.
If Anything Was Installed Recently, Start Here
The other two installation faults in the same family are a drain hose routed without a high loop, which lets sink water siphon back into the tub, and a hose crushed or kinked behind the machine when it was pushed into the cabinet. Together with the knockout plug these three account for the large majority of drain complaints on recent installations, and none of them is a broken part.
When the Machine Reports It: Reading the Code
Machines with a display often name the fault before you have looked at anything. On Whirlpool, Maytag and KitchenAid dishwashers the drain fault is F9E1, a long drain time. What makes it worth knowing is the order of Whirlpool’s own troubleshooting for it, which tells you where the manufacturer expects the problem to be.
Whirlpool’s F9E1 page sends you first to a kinked, pinched or clogged hose between the dishwasher and the sink; then to the disposer, including whether the knockout plug was removed on a new installation; then to the air gap, cap removed and blockages cleared. Only after all of that does it discuss the control.
It also flags over-sudsing from the wrong detergent or too much of it, which is a genuinely underrated cause: suds prevent the pump from moving water and the machine reads that as a drain failure.
The lesson generalizes past one brand. A drain code is not a pump part number. It means the machine failed to reach an empty sump within its allotted time, and everything from a matted filter to a blocked trap produces that.
What We Actually Find, From Our Own Invoices

Drain problems are the biggest category we see. Of those 2,684 jobs, 416 were logged as “will not drain” — more than leaking at 331, far more than not cleaning at 112, not starting at 86, or noise at 93. Now the number that is worth sitting with. The drain pump is the most-replaced part in our dishwasher data, 273 jobs at a $350 median — and yet the median for all drain calls is $325, meaningfully lower.
A symptom median that sits below the price of the part everyone assumes is at fault only happens one way: a substantial share of drain calls get resolved without replacing the pump at all.
Cleared sumps, flushed hoses, corrected loops, punched-out knockout plugs. That gap is the most useful thing our data has to say about this fault, and it is the reason we would rather diagnose than sell you a pump over the phone.
Safe to Check Before You Call — Then Stop
- Bail the water out and clean the filter. Whirlpool’s own first step is exactly this: cup the standing water into a bucket, lift out the filter assembly, rinse it under warm water and use a soft brush on the residue. On a machine whose filter has never been cleaned, this alone is frequently the entire repair, and it is the one part of the drain path designed to be owner-serviced.
- With the filter out, look into the sump with a flashlight. You are looking for what Whirlpool names: food particles, labels, seeds, toothpicks, glass. Remove what you can see and reach by hand. Do not fish around blindly, and do not reach into the pump inlet — broken glass ends up there and so do fingers.
- Check the outside of the system, in this order: disposal, hose, loop. Run the disposal to confirm it is clear. If the disposal or dishwasher is new, confirm the knockout plug was removed. Look behind the machine for a kinked or crushed hose, and check that the hose rises to the underside of the counter before it drops. If there is an air gap on the sink deck, its cap comes off and it can be cleared per the manufacturer’s instructions.
If the machine still will not drain after those three, stop there. What is left is the pump, its check valve, the wiring to it and the control that drives it — which means pulling the dishwasher out from under the counter with the water and power still connected, tipping it to reach the pump housing underneath, and metering a motor circuit next to a supply line.
That is technician work, and it is also where an unnecessary part gets bought: a pump is the most expensive thing on the list and the most commonly replaced without evidence.

Note the shape of this table rather than only the numbers: nearly every outcome lands between $325 and $390, so the money you save on a dishwasher is not saved by finding a cheaper part — it is saved by not replacing the wrong one.
Why It Comes Back, and What Else to Read
Drain faults repeat for a small number of predictable reasons. Grease is the main one: dishes scraped but never rinsed of heavy fat load the filter and coat the inside of the drain hose, and cold-water-heavy short cycles do not carry it away. Hard water is the second, because scale narrows every passage it touches and makes the filter harder to clean properly.
And detergent overdosing is the third — the over-sudsing Whirlpool warns about in its own F9E1 guidance, which stops a healthy pump from moving water. If your supply is hard, the mechanism is laid out in what hard water does to a dishwasher.
Three adjacent symptoms are worth keeping separate from this one. Water on the floor rather than in the tub is a leak, not a drain fault, and is covered in dishwasher leaking from the bottom. If it was not, the dishwasher has nowhere to send its water at all — not slowly, completely. Whirlpool lists this specifically under a newly installed dishwasher not draining.
It is the reason a brand new machine can fail on its very first cycle purely because of how it was connected, and it is the first thing to check whenever a dishwasher or a disposal has been fitted recently.
What does F9E1 mean on a Whirlpool dishwasher?
It is a long drain time fault: the machine failed to empty its sump within the time allowed. Whirlpool’s own troubleshooting order for it is telling — first a kinked, pinched or clogged hose between dishwasher and sink, then the disposer including the knockout plug on new installations, then the air gap with its cap removed and blockages cleared.
It also flags over-sudsing from the wrong detergent or too much of it, since suds stop the pump moving water. A drain code is not a pump part number.
How high does a dishwasher drain hose need to be?
