The Igniter, and Why the Oven Gets Slow Before It Stops

Most gas ovens in Georgia light with a hot-surface igniter, a small element that glows orange next to the burner. It does two jobs at once. It gets hot enough to light the gas, and the current it draws is what tells the safety valve to open. As an igniter ages it still glows, but it draws a little less current every year, and the valve opens later and later.

That produces a very specific history, and it is the one we hear most on the phone. Preheat used to take a quarter of an hour and now takes much longer. The oven reaches temperature, then drifts low while the food is in. The glow is visible through the window but the flame takes a long time to appear, or does not appear at all. On ranges with separate bake and broil igniters, the broiler still works while the bake side does not. All of those are one $345 repair, and the oven usually works like new afterwards.

November Is the Month, and the Turkey Is the Test

Oven work in Atlanta follows the holidays, not the weather. November alone carries 11.8 percent of our annual metro Atlanta oven volume, and November and December together 20.8 percent, against 6 to 10 percent for every other month of the year.

It is not a one-year spike. In 2025 we took 122 oven calls in November against 55 to 68 in each of the other months from July to December. In 2024 November was again the busiest month of the second half, and in 2023 it missed first place by three calls.

The mechanism is discovery rather than wear. An oven that bakes a tray of cookies on a Tuesday never shows that its igniter is weak. A twenty-pound turkey at 325 degrees for four or five hours, with the door opened every half hour, shows it on the first afternoon. Holiday baking finds the weak element, the sticky door latch and the touchpad key that only half registers – the parts that were already on their way out.

The practical advice follows from that. Run the oven hard in October: preheat to 350, note how long it takes, and put a thermometer on the middle rack. If preheat is clearly slower than it used to be, or the thermometer reads well short of the dial, book the visit before the holiday rush rather than in the middle of it. Where the work order names the fuel, gas ranges outnumber electric ones in our metro Atlanta oven work by close to five to one. When the Temperature Is Off

An oven does not hold one exact temperature. The thermostat lets it overshoot and fall back in a cycle, and a swing of 25 to 30 degrees either side of the dial is normal behavior, not a fault. Before anything is replaced, the technician measures it properly: an oven thermometer on the middle rack, the oven at 350, readings every few minutes for twenty minutes, and the average of those readings is the number that matters.
