Six things in a typical home run on gas: the range, oven or cooktop; the clothes dryer; the water heater; the furnace or heating system; a fireplace; and an outdoor grill. Cooking and drying are the ones most people think of, but the water heater and the heating system are what actually consume the bulk of the gas. Everything else in the house is electric.

Gas Range, Oven or Dryer Acting Up?

We repair gas cooking appliances and gas dryers across five metros. Igniters, valves, burners and safety devices — measured properly rather than swapped on a guess.

People arrive at this question for three different reasons, and all three are practical. Some are moving into a house and working out what they have inherited. Some are reading a gas bill that looks too high and trying to figure out what is producing it. And some are shopping for an appliance and need to know whether their kitchen can even accept a gas model. This covers all three.

One thing worth stating up front: whether a given appliance runs on gas is not a property of the appliance type. It is a property of your specific house. A dryer, a range and a water heater all come in gas and electric versions, and which one you have depends on what the builder installed and whether a gas line was run to that spot.

Cooking: range, oven, cooktop

The most common gas appliance in a home, and the one people most actively choose. Gas cooking gives instant heat control and visible flame, which is why it stays popular in serious kitchens even where electricity is cheaper. Ranges combine oven and cooktop; a wall oven and a separate cooktop can be mixed, and dual-fuel setups pair a gas cooktop with an electric oven because electric ovens hold temperature more evenly for baking.

Clothes dryer

Gas dryers are extremely common and frequently unrecognised by the people who own them. The drum, controls and blower all run on electricity — gas only provides the heat, through a burner and igniter. This is why a gas dryer plugs into a normal household outlet rather than the large 240-volt receptacle an electric dryer needs. If your dryer plugs into an ordinary-looking socket, it is a gas dryer.

Water heater

One of the two largest gas consumers in most homes, and the appliance running most consistently — it maintains a tank of hot water around the clock, every day of the year, whether anyone uses it or not. Tank models and tankless models both come in gas versions. If you are trying to work out where a large gas bill comes from, this is usually a significant part of the answer.

Furnace or heating system

The other big consumer, though in our climate it is highly seasonal. A gas furnace burns gas to heat air, which is then distributed by an electric blower. Plenty of homes across Florida use electric heat pumps instead and have no gas heating at all, while gas furnaces are far more common in Georgia and the Carolinas where winters actually demand output. Boilers, where they exist, are gas as well.

Fireplace

Gas fireplaces and gas log inserts are common in homes built or renovated in the last few decades. Direct-vent and vent-free variants both exist. Easy to identify: if it lights from a switch, a remote or a key valve in the wall rather than needing kindling, it runs on gas.

Outdoor grill

Either connected to the house gas supply as a built-in, or running from a portable propane cylinder. Worth mentioning because a plumbed-in grill line is a genuine part of your household gas system, and because a leaking cylinder connection is one of the more common gas smells homeowners encounter.

💡 Occasionally gas, usually not: pool and spa heaters are frequently gas, and in our service area that is a meaningful category. Standby generators often run on natural gas or propane. Patio heaters and outdoor firepits are gas. Everything else — refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, washing machine, freezer — is electric in any modern home. Gas refrigerators exist but only in RVs and off-grid installations.

How to Tell Gas From Electric Without Any Paperwork

You do not need a manual or a model number to work this out. Five checks settle it for every appliance in the house.

  • Look for a flame. Gas burns visibly. A blue flame under a cooktop burner, behind a dryer drum, or through the window of a fireplace is definitive. Electric heating elements glow orange-red instead, or hide entirely under a smooth ceramic surface.
  • Check the plug. This is the fastest test for a dryer. Electric dryers use a large 240-volt plug with three or four thick prongs into a distinctive receptacle. Gas dryers use an ordinary household plug, because gas provides the heat and electricity only runs the motor and controls.
  • Look behind the appliance for a yellow flexible line. Gas appliances connect through a corrugated flexible connector, often yellow-coated, with a shutoff valve nearby. If you can see one behind the range or dryer, that appliance is gas.
  • Find your gas meter and follow the pipes. No meter and no propane tank means no gas appliances at all, and you are done. If there is a meter, the black iron pipe running from it branches to every gas appliance in the house, which lets you count them.
  • Check the cooktop surface. Grates with burner heads underneath means gas. A flat glass or ceramic surface means electric or induction. Coil elements mean electric.
🔎 Renting or just moved in? Look for the shutoff valve. Every gas appliance must have an accessible shutoff, usually a small lever or wing-nut valve on the pipe within a few feet of the unit. Find the valves and you have found every gas appliance in the property. Worth doing on day one anyway, because in an emergency you want to already know where they are.

Natural Gas and Propane Are Not Interchangeable

This trips up more people in our service area than anywhere else, because both are common here — natural gas where utility mains run, propane in areas without them, which covers a lot of suburban and rural property across Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas.

Natural gas is mostly methane, delivered by pipeline to a meter, and supplied to appliances at low pressure. Propane, also called LP gas, is stored as a liquid in a cylinder or a tank on the property, is supplied at a somewhat higher pressure, and carries considerably more energy per cubic foot. Because the energy content and pressure differ, the appliance has to be built or converted for the fuel it will actually burn.

The practical consequence: an appliance set up for natural gas will not run correctly on propane, and the reverse is equally true. It needs a conversion kit, which replaces the burner orifices with correctly sized ones and adjusts the regulator. Running an appliance on the wrong fuel without conversion produces either a starved, lifting flame or an oversized sooty one, and neither is safe. If you are buying an appliance for a propane property, check that a conversion kit is included or available before you buy.

⚠️ Never attempt a fuel conversion as a DIY job. It involves changing orifices and adjusting the gas regulator, and getting either wrong produces incomplete combustion — which means carbon monoxide. Conversion is a licensed technician job, and on many appliances doing it yourself voids the warranty as well.

Where the Gas Actually Goes

If the question behind your search is a bill rather than an inventory, the distribution is worth knowing, because it is heavily lopsided and not at all intuitive.

Heating and hot water dominate. A gas furnace running through winter and a water heater maintaining a tank around the clock together account for the overwhelming majority of household gas use. Cooking, by contrast, is a small fraction — a gas range used daily consumes far less than most people assume, because burners run for minutes at a time rather than hours. A gas dryer sits in between, closer to cooking than to heating.

Which means a gas bill that jumped without your habits changing is far more likely to be the water heater or the heating system than the kitchen. In our climate a summer gas bill is essentially water heating plus cooking, so comparing a summer bill against a winter one separates heating from everything else quite cleanly.

What Uses Gas in an Apartment

Apartments follow the same rules with a smaller list, because most of the big gas equipment is shared building infrastructure rather than yours. Typically what you have in-unit is the range or cooktop, and sometimes a dryer if the unit has its own laundry.

Water heating and space heating are usually centralised — a building boiler serving many units, which appears on your bill as part of the rent or as an allocated utility charge rather than as a gas meter you control. Some buildings do give each unit its own gas water heater and its own meter, in which case you are back to the full list.

The quickest way to know: check whether you have your own gas meter and whether you receive a gas bill in your name. No individual meter and no gas bill means your only gas appliance is probably the cooktop, supplied through a building account. It also matters for a practical reason — in a building with shared gas, a gas smell is a building emergency, not just your apartment’s problem, and management needs to know alongside the utility.


Safety, Briefly But Properly

🚨 If you smell gas right now: do not flip any switch, do not light anything, do not use your phone inside the building. Open windows if you can do it on the way out, leave, and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. Utilities treat suspected leaks as emergencies and attend without charging for the call. The utility makes the property safe first — appliance repair comes afterwards.

Natural gas and propane are both odourless as produced, so suppliers add mercaptan to give that unmistakable rotten-egg smell. That smell is a deliberate safety feature and it deserves to be trusted every single time, even when you suspect it is nothing.

Carbon monoxide is the second risk and it is the quiet one. Any appliance burning gas produces CO, and correctly functioning equipment vents all of it outside. Incomplete combustion or a blocked flue puts it into the house, and CO has no smell at all. If you have any gas appliance, you need working CO detectors — on every level of the home and near sleeping areas. Batteries checked twice a year, detector replaced per its labelled lifespan.

The visible warning sign is flame colour. A healthy natural gas flame burns crisp blue with a sharp inner cone. Yellow or orange tips mean incomplete combustion, which means CO production above normal — worth acting on rather than living with.
