When Appliances Break: Seasonal Repair Data From 51,634 Service Visits
Appliances do not fail evenly across the year. Across 51,634 completed service visits we can date to the day the customer called, July runs 49% busier than October, and the pattern holds appliance by appliance with two exceptions that turn out to be the most interesting part. The usual explanation for all this is heat. Our data says the usual explanation is wrong: Florida and Georgia produce almost identical seasonal curves despite very different climates. Whatever drives the calendar, it is not the thermometer.
The year, month by month
Each bar is that month’s share of a full year of service requests, dated by when the customer contacted us rather than when the technician arrived.
Four summer months carry 38.7% of the annual workload against 22.3% for the three winter months. The drop from August to September is the sharpest single move in the year — 9.1% to 7.0%, a fifth of the volume gone in four weeks. Nothing about appliances changes on the first of September. Something about households does.
The finding that rules out climate
The obvious explanation for a summer peak is heat: hot kitchens, compressors working harder, garage refrigerators cooking. We can test that directly, because our two largest markets have genuinely different climates. Florida is subtropical, humid year-round, mild in winter. Georgia has real seasons and a proper winter. If heat drove the pattern, the curves should differ.

The two curves are the same. Same peak month, summer shares within a tenth of a percentage point, winter shares two points apart. Two climates, one calendar. Whatever produces the July peak is not temperature, because temperature is the thing that differs most between these two states and the outcome does not move.
Every appliance has its own calendar
The aggregate hides more than it shows. Split by appliance and the spread widens dramatically — one category swings by a factor of nearly four across the year, and one peaks in the opposite season from everything else.

The dryer is the most seasonal appliance we service by a wide margin. June runs at 17.2% of its annual volume against 4.4% in December — nearly four times the call rate. No other category comes close. That is a striking result for a machine that sits indoors and does the same job regardless of the month, and it fits the activity explanation better than any mechanical one: summer laundry volume in a household with children home is not comparable to December.
That distinction cuts both ways across the table. The refrigerator peak in May is more likely a real failure pattern — a fridge is in continuous use and a fault announces itself within hours. The oven peak in November almost certainly is not. Most categories sit somewhere between the two, and the honest position is that a service-call calendar conflates failure with detection and we cannot fully separate them.
What this means if you own the appliance
- Test the oven in early November, not the week you need it. The November spike is entirely avoidable at the household level. Run it to 350°F for twenty minutes in the first week of the month. If it does not hold temperature, you have three weeks of lead time instead of three days.
- October is the easiest month to get an appointment. It is the quietest month of the year for us and for the trade generally, which matters when parts need ordering. Anything you have been postponing is cheapest in effort right now.
- Check the dryer vent before summer, not after. Dryer calls are four times higher in June than December. Heading into the season with a clear duct is worth more than dealing with it in the middle of it — and it is the leading cause of dryer fires as well.
- Do not read the summer peak as a reason to worry in summer. The failures are spread more evenly than the calls. What clusters is when people notice and act.
One practical note on booking: the seasonal curve does not change how fast we can come out nearly as much as people expect. Across 63,970 appointments, 23.3% were scheduled the same day and 57.4% same day or the next business day — figures that hold up through the July peak.
