Five igniters, and the trap that makes people replace the wrong part $225 TO $443

Five of our Lawrenceville invoices are igniter replacements, more than any other repair in the file, and one of them is specifically a power igniter at $443. Here is the mechanism, because it is the most misdiagnosed fault in gas cooking. A modern gas oven has no pilot light.

It uses a hot-surface igniter, a brittle ceramic bar that must draw enough current to open the safety gas valve, and as the ceramic ages it draws less. The moment it falls below the valve’s threshold, the oven stops lighting even though the igniter still glows visibly orange.

That is why people look at a glowing igniter, conclude it is fine, and start suspecting the gas supply or the control board. The test is current draw with a clamp meter and it takes two minutes.

City gas inside the limits, Atlanta Gas Light outside, and one range that was simply switched off TWO SUPPLIERS

Natural gas here comes from two different places depending on your address, which is unusual and worth knowing. Inside the city limits the supplier is the City of Lawrenceville’s own Gas Department, which also serves parts of Gwinnett, Rockdale and Walton counties; elsewhere gas is delivered on the Atlanta Gas Light network and sold through competing marketers.

One of our local repairs is a GE door latch at $316, against a company-wide $345 for latch and hinge work, and it is the single most avoidable failure on this page.

A self-clean cycle takes the cavity above 800 °F with the door locked, and that heat is what wears out the latch, the lock motor and, on a built-in installation, the cooling fan whose only job is to keep the surrounding cabinetry and the control board from cooking.

When that fan fails during a self-clean, the board is next, which is how a cleaning cycle turns into a $475 repair. Our advice for Lawrenceville kitchens is unglamorous but it works: use self-clean once or twice a year rather than monthly, run it with the kitchen ventilated and the house occupied, and never immediately before a holiday you are cooking for.
