On the DeKalb side, the county draws its whole supply from the Chattahoochee River and treats it at a single plant: in a June 2024 presentation to the county commission, DeKalb Watershed Management stated it is the only county of its size in metro Atlanta with one water source and one treatment plant, described a double point of failure with no redundancy at the Scott Candler plant, and counted 596 miles of small-diameter main still waiting for replacement.
On the Gwinnett side, the supply is Lake Sidney Lanier treated at two plants, Lanier Filter and Shoal Creek, which together produce more than 200 million gallons a day using ozone biofiltration. For appliances that is not trivia.
