The water filter is the only part of a refrigerator that is designed to be consumed and replaced by the owner, and it is also the part most often ignored until something else breaks. A carbon block filter works by trapping particles and adsorbing chlorine and off-tastes. It has a finite capacity, usually rated around 200 to 300 gallons depending on the model, and once that capacity is spent it does not simply stop filtering — it starts restricting flow.

That distinction matters. People assume an old filter means slightly worse-tasting water. What actually happens is a gradual pressure drop that the rest of the water system has to work around, and the first thing to fail is never the drinking water dispenser. It is the ice maker, because ice production needs a specific fill volume in a specific window of time.


Find Your Filter First

Filter location varies by manufacturer and model year, and it is the step where most people get stuck. There are four common positions, and knowing which one you have tells you the removal method as well.

  • Upper right interior, ceiling → twist a quarter turn, pulls down
  • Upper left interior corner → same quarter-turn twist style
  • Base grille, front bottom → push-in release, pulls straight out
  • Inside the fresh food compartment, vertical → pull-out cartridge style
  • Behind the crisper drawer → older side-by-side models
  • External, on the supply line → inline filter, needs shutoff first
🔎 Fastest way to identify yours: find the model number on a sticker inside the fresh food compartment, usually on the left wall or along the ceiling, then search that model plus the words water filter. Every manufacturer publishes the location and the correct cartridge number. Do not guess the cartridge — filters are keyed differently and a nearly-right one will either not seat or will leak under pressure.

The Replacement, Step by Step

  • Shut off water only if your filter is external. Internal filters have a self-sealing valve that closes automatically when you pull the cartridge, so no shutoff is needed. Inline filters mounted on the supply line do need the valve closed first.
  • Have a towel ready. Roughly a cup of water sits inside the housing and will come out with the old cartridge. Twist-style filters spill less than push-in base grille types.
  • Remove the old filter. Twist styles go a quarter turn counterclockwise then pull. Push-in styles usually have a small button or you press the filter in slightly to release it. If it will not budge, do not force it — check for a lock tab you have missed.
  • Compare old to new before installing. Same length, same keying, same O-ring configuration. If anything differs, you have the wrong cartridge. Check that the new filter’s O-rings are seated and not twisted.
  • Insert and seat it fully. Push in firmly and twist clockwise until it stops. It should feel positively locked, not springy. A filter that is not fully seated is the number one cause of leaks after replacement.
  • Purge 2 to 4 gallons through the dispenser. This is the step people skip and then complain about. New carbon filters shed fine black dust, and the system holds trapped air that makes the dispenser spit. Run water until it comes out clear and steady, in bursts rather than continuously so you do not overheat the dispenser solenoid.
  • Discard the first two batches of ice. They will contain carbon fines and taste off. It is harmless but unpleasant.
  • Reset the filter indicator. Hold the filter reset button, or the ice type and light buttons together on many models, for three seconds until the light changes colour.
💧 Why the purge is not optional: trapped air is why a freshly changed dispenser sputters and spits, and homeowners routinely mistake that for a defective filter. Two to four gallons clears both the air and the carbon dust. If the water is still spitting after a full gallon and the filter is properly seated, then something else is restricting flow.

Six Months Is a Timer, Not a Measurement

The filter indicator light on your refrigerator does not test anything. It is a countdown — typically six months, sometimes tied to a rough water-usage counter, but on most models simply a timer. It has no idea what your water quality is or how much you actually dispensed. Which means it can turn amber while your filter still has capacity, or stay green long after the filter has become a restriction.

Across Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas this matters more than in most of the country. Municipal supplies here commonly run 120 to 180 parts per million hardness, and anything over 120 counts as hard water. Dissolved calcium and magnesium load the filter media faster and leave scale in the tubing behind it. In water that hard, a filter rated for six months is realistically finished in four.

When it takes noticeably longer than the fresh-filter baseline, the filter is restricting flow — regardless of what the indicator says. That single number is a better signal than any timer.

What a Clogged Filter Actually Breaks

This is where a maintenance item turns into a service call. A restricted filter starves the whole water system, and the components downstream do not fail gracefully.

Ice production stops first. An ice maker fills on a timed cycle — the valve opens for a set number of seconds and whatever water arrives is what freezes. Restrict the flow and the mold only partially fills, so you get hollow cubes, small cubes, or eventually nothing while the freezer temperature looks perfect. People replace ice makers over this. The inlet valve works harder than designed. The water inlet valve is a solenoid that opens against line pressure. When a clogged filter drops downstream pressure, the valve stays energised longer on every fill to deliver the same volume. Longer energised time means more heat in the coil, and inlet valve coils fail from heat. A filter left in for two years is a genuine contributing cause of a valve replacement.

The dispenser sputters and the line can freeze. Low flow means water sits in the line inside the freezer door longer between uses, and water sitting in a sub-zero space freezes. A frozen dispenser line is a common winter and heavy-hard-water symptom, and thawing it without addressing the restriction just resets the clock.

OEM Versus Aftermarket, Honestly

An OEM filter from the manufacturer typically runs $40 to $60. Aftermarket equivalents sell for $15 to $25, often three to a pack. The price gap is large enough that the question comes up on almost every service call, so here is the straight answer.

A good aftermarket filter is genuinely fine. What makes it good is independent certification: look for NSF/ANSI 42 for taste and chlorine reduction, and NSF/ANSI 53 for health-related contaminants such as lead and cysts. A filter carrying those certifications has been tested by a third party to reduce what it claims to reduce. A filter that only says “compatible” and lists no certification has been tested by nobody.

The real risk with cheap uncertified cartridges is not filtration quality, it is fit. Slightly wrong O-ring dimensions or a marginally different body length produce a slow seep that you may not see for weeks, because it drips down the back of the cabinet rather than onto the floor. We have pulled warped aftermarket cartridges that had been leaking behind the crisper the whole time. Certified aftermarket, yes. Unbranded three-for-twelve-dollars, not worth it.

⚠️ One thing not to do: do not run a refrigerator with the filter removed and nothing in its place unless your model came with a bypass plug and you have installed it. Without the bypass, some models will not dispense at all, and others will pass completely unfiltered water while you assume it is being treated.
