Search for appliance repair anywhere in metro Atlanta and you will be told that hard water is destroying your machines and that a softener will save them. In Cherokee County that is measurably wrong, and for once we can prove it with the utility’s own published figure.
The Cherokee County Water and Sewerage Authority publishes the figure itself: water above 100 mg/L as calcium carbonate is defined as hard, and Cherokee County’s water is 16 mg/L — which the Authority describes as very soft. Fluoride is held at the state-mandated 0.7 mg/L. The raw water comes from the Etowah River, which runs east to west straight through the middle of Canton, treated at the Etowah River facility that CCWSA has expanded to an operable 38 million gallons a day, backed by the Lathem drought contingency reservoir in the northeast of the county, serving more than 84,000 meters and more than 225,000 people.
Our own invoices agree with that number, which is the part we find persuasive. Both Canton ZIP codes carry Holly Springs as a postal alias, and 22 of our 551 jobs are at Holly Springs addresses rather than Canton ones.
The zones are also enormous: 30114 covers 95.189 square miles of land and 30115 covers 73.169, against 18.33 square miles for the City of Canton itself, and 30114 holds a further 6.581 square miles of water where the county meets Lake Allatoona and the Etowah backwater.
That matters in two practical ways. A Canton mailing address can be twenty minutes from downtown Canton in country that is still genuinely rural, which is part of why not every address here is on the county water system. And the two zones are economically different in one specific respect: 30114 is 30.84 percent renter-occupied and 30115 only 16.87 percent, close to double.

Housing, value, income and tenure figures are 2024 American Community Survey data via zip-codes.com. Set the job counts against the housing and the two are almost identical: 13.3 calls per thousand homes in 30115 and 12.7 in 30114. The prices are identical too, $344 against $342 on samples of 144 and 143 repairs, and the completed-repair rates within a point of each other.
That similarity is the finding, because on paper these two ZIP codes are not similar at all. 30115 earns $14,187 more per household, its homes are worth $34,400 more, and it has barely half the share of renters. In the three Georgia clusters before this one we found call frequency tracking tenure rather than income; Canton does not reproduce that, and we would rather say so than quietly drop it.
What the numbers here support is the plain version: the housing on both sides went up in the same fifteen years with the same generation of equipment in it, and the same generation of equipment fails the same way and costs the same to fix.
