Cumming Utilities dates itself to an act of the Georgia General Assembly in 1835; it ran wells downtown, then built three small dams on local creeks and a treatment plant in the early 1940s, upgrading it in 1959, 1969 and 1979 — and it was the 1979 upgrade that came with the county’s first Lake Lanier withdrawal contract from the US Army Corps of Engineers.
The plant went to 18 MGD in 1998 and 24 MGD in 2007, with 36 MGD planned by 2050.
Here is the part almost nobody outside the water business knows: the City of Cumming is the sole provider of raw water to the entire county. Forsyth County built its own treatment plant in 1998 but buys raw water through the city’s single intake, which is why the county is now spending on a new intake of its own feeding the Antioch treatment plant.

Housing, value and income figures are 2024 American Community Survey data via zip-codes.com.
