OE, dE and UE: Three Codes, One Puddle

LG is unusually clear about which stage failed, and using that is the fastest way to avoid paying for the wrong part. All three of these codes can leave you standing in front of a machine full of water and wet laundry, and they mean completely different things.

OE is a drain fault. The water level did not fall far enough within the time the cycle allows. It confirms the machine reached the drain step and asked the pump to run, which clears the door lock and the earlier cycle logic. What it does not say is why the water stayed — a packed filter, a jammed impeller, a kinked hose, a slimed hose and a blocked standpipe all produce exactly the same OE.

dE is a door fault. The control could not confirm the door was locked, so it never started the wash or the drain. The tub may be full simply because the cycle stopped where it was. UE is a balance fault. The machine tried to spin, detected a load it judged too uneven to accelerate safely, redistributed it, tried again, and eventually gave up. It usually drains the water it can, but you are left with soaking laundry and often some water in the tub — which looks like a drain failure and is not one. A single heavy item like a bath mat or a duvet is the classic trigger.

The mistake that costs you twice: ordering a drain pump because there is water in the drum. If the code is dE the pump was never asked to run, and if it is UE the pump probably worked fine. Only OE points at the drain circuit at all — and even then the first suspect is the filter, not the pump.

Where LG Puts the Filter

Every LG front-load washer has a drain pump filter behind a small panel at the bottom front of the cabinet, with a short capped hose beside it for letting the water out. Both are meant for the owner, and in our experience most owners have never opened either.

That filter catches what the drum lets through: lint, hair, coins, buttons, the corner of a tissue. It fills gradually and silently. Drain times stretch a few seconds a month, cycles run longer, and then one day the machine throws OE with a full drum. Nothing failed. The passage closed, and the pump had been working harder against it for a year.

Top-load LG machines are a different story. Most have no owner-accessible filter, so debris travels straight to the pump. That is why a top loader is more likely to arrive with a humming pump and a jammed impeller, while a front loader typically presents as a slow drain that finally times out. If you have a top loader and the pump hums, the object is already in the pump and no amount of filter cleaning will help — because there is no filter to clean.

One thing worth being clear about: the tub clean cycle does not clean this filter. It runs hot water through the drum to deal with residue on the tub and the door gasket. It has no way of lifting a coin out of a filter housing. A machine that has had a tub clean run every month for years can still have a completely blocked filter.

What You Can Check Safely in Twenty Minutes

Unplug the machine before reaching near the drum, the filter or the pump. A washer stopped mid-cycle can resume when the control recovers, and standing water plus mains voltage is not a combination to test.
Write down the code, then listen. Plug it back in, start a Spin Only or Drain cycle, and note whether the pump makes any sound. Hum or grind means blockage; silence means it was never energised. Then unplug again.
If the code was UE, redistribute the load. Spread the laundry evenly around the drum, take out any single heavy item, and run a Spin Only cycle. If it spins and drains, nothing is broken and no part is needed.
Open the panel at the bottom front on a front loader. Pull the small capped hose into a shallow tray first and let the water out in stages, then unscrew the filter and clear it under a tap. Expect coins, hair and grey slime, and expect more water than you think.
Look into the filter housing with a torch. The impeller is often visible. An object wedged against it is your fault found, and worth removing before any pump is discussed.
Check the drain hose behind the machine. No kinks, and no more than about 10 to 12 cm into the standpipe. Deeper and the machine siphons: water leaves and runs straight back, so the level never drops. Free to fix, and most common right after a washer has been moved.
Pour a bucket of water down the standpipe. If it backs up, the house drain is blocked and the washer is fine. One minute here saves more service calls than anything else on the list.
Bail out a top loader before inspecting anything. A jug into a bucket, then a towel. Nothing underneath can be assessed through a full tub of water.

If the code was OE, the filter is clean, the hose is clear, the standpipe drains and the pump is still silent when it should run, the fault is in the pump motor, the pressure sensor or the control. Those need a meter to separate, and this is where guessing gets expensive: three parts, three prices, one full drum.

What a Technician Actually Checks

The order matters, because each test rules out a branch of causes instead of replacing parts and hoping.

Stored codes read first, not just the one on the display. A history of UE with a recent OE tells a different story from OE alone, and it often points at a pump that has been struggling for months.
Filter and pump housing opened before any electrical test. A blockage found here ends the job at the cheapest point, and it also explains why a pump may be failing.
Door lock continuity and voltage. Checked before the pump, because a good pump that is never energised is indistinguishable from a dead one without it.
Voltage at the pump during the drain step. Power with no pumping convicts the pump; no power sends the diagnosis back to the lock circuit or the board.
Impeller turned by hand with the pump out. A jam nearly always has an object in it, and finding that object is what prevents the repeat visit.
Pressure sensor and its air tube. The machine judges water level through a column of trapped air. Pinched or slime-filled, it reports a level that does not exist, and the control either stops draining early or throws OE with an empty tub.

Why an Unbalanced Load Looks Like a Drain Fault

This one deserves its own section because it is the most common false alarm we attend on LG machines. A modern washer spins fast, and an off-centre load at high speed puts real force through the suspension and the cabinet. Rather than risk that, the control checks the balance before it accelerates, and it refuses to spin a load it cannot even out.

What the owner sees is a machine that has stopped with soaking laundry, sometimes with water still in the drum because the final drain never completed. That looks exactly like a pump problem. It is not: the pump is fine and the machine has simply declined to finish the cycle. The clue is the code, and the second clue is what is in the drum — one bath mat, one duvet, one pair of jeans on their own, or a large towel that has wrapped itself into a rope.

Why the Same Fault Comes Back

Repeat drain visits trace to the object that caused the first one. An underwire threads itself into an impeller and does not leave the machine when the pump is replaced — it waits in the housing for the new impeller. That is why the debris matters as much as the part, and why a proper repair ends with the housing and hose checked rather than a new pump simply bolted in.

The second pattern is the filter interval. A filter cleared during a service call fills again, because nothing about the household changed. Every couple of months suits a home that washes most days; quarterly is enough for lighter use; more often with pets or long hair. Machines whose filters are cleaned on a schedule almost never present with OE at all.

The third is detergent, and it hits LG front loaders hard because they use very little water. Overdosing a high-efficiency machine — which most people do, since the caps are generous and cold cycles dissolve less — builds a grey slime through the sump and hose. It narrows the passage over a year or two until drains slow and a cycle finally times out. How Long a Drain Should Take
