Then the Duct, Then the Parts

Once the supply is confirmed, the order of suspicion is airflow, then the safety devices, then the element itself. That is not arbitrary — it follows the way these faults cause each other.

A dryer works by pulling room air across a heater and pushing the moisture outside. When the duct fills with lint, hot air cannot leave, so heat builds inside the cabinet instead. Every manufacturer protects against that with a thermal fuse: a one-time device that opens permanently when internal temperature crosses its limit. The motor is on a separate circuit, so it keeps running while the heater is dead — the same symptom as a lost supply leg, from a completely different cause.

That is why replacing a thermal fuse on its own is a repair with a countdown on it. The fuse did not fail, it did its job. Leave the duct blocked and the new one opens again, sometimes within a fortnight. A proper repair measures airflow, clears the restriction, and then replaces the fuse.

The element comes last of the common causes, and it fails in two ways worth distinguishing. An open coil produces no heat at all and reads open on a meter. A coil that has sagged and touches its housing reads short to ground and can produce heat that will not switch off — a more urgent fault than no heat, and one you should stop using the machine over.

What You Can Check in Ten Minutes

Switch the double breaker fully off, then back on. Not a nudge — all the way off. A pole that has tripped while looking closed is the single most common free fix for a dryer that tumbles cold.
Smell and look at the back panel. Discolouration, a plastic or hot-metal smell, or scorch marks near where the cord enters mean the terminal block or cord is overheating. Unplug the dryer and stop there — that is a call, not a DIY job.
Clean the lint screen and the slot underneath. Lint bypasses the screen and packs the housing below it, where nobody looks. A vacuum crevice tool reaches it.
Pull the dryer out and check the hose. A crushed or kinked hose behind the machine is the most common restriction there is, and foil concertina hose is the worst offender because its ridges hold lint.
